The joy of socks

I've just been reading the washing thread, and the amount of people who suggested getting rid of unmatched socks and just having one style/ colour for each person in the house.
My life would be sadder if I had to wear grey socks every day.

Socks are an unsung hero in life- I'm momentarily a bit happier when I realise I'm wearing full length jeans that day so I can wear my green space socks, or my 3 year old realises I've got on my rainbow stripe socks so disappears off to find hers to match.

There is no point to this thread. Or maybe there is, actually- any recommendations on where I can get trainer socks that don't roll down your foot? But even if none appear, I felt socks got enough of a bashing that an appreciation post was warranted. I'm going to choose some happy socks today.

I knit our socks. It really isn’t too difficult to learn and such a portable project too. I suggestTin Can Knits tincanknits.com/pattern/rye-light?g=2 for a great easy to learn pattern book. Sock knitting is addictive sadly and you will spend the rest of your life searching fornew and colourful yarns or darning holes in precious ancient socks

dudsville · 05/11/2022 08:44

I love socks, but i tried interesting ones and didn't get on with them.

hidingmyusername · 05/11/2022 08:49

I love socks.

Knitted a rainbow stripe pair but they grew and so now DH with his enormous plates wears them. A joy to see them peeking out of his boots.

I've got a small collection of Alpaca ones which are soft, comfy and hard wearing, plus some striped ones and some with robots on.

Lovely white trainer socks

Spotty and glittery for dancing in.

All lovingly folded kon Marie style ( if you love socks do it do it do it!) in my drawer. Looks glorious and I don't have unmatched pairs anymore.

Socks. Lovely, lovely. Socks.

I really should be on commission as I always mention them in these threads - The Cambridge Sock co. Do the most glorious range of colours in woolly socks in all sorts of sizes. I've had some of their mohair ones and they last well
I also like to check out Cos and H&M men's

Surprisingly excited at this thread

Any recommendations for colourful socks that are not tight round the ankles

(Or possibly just not prone to shrinking)!

WellTidy · 05/11/2022 09:18

I feel that I have my socks choice down to a fine art. I’ve worked very hard on it over the years and now I am in a good place. My feet are always cold, but I’ve cracked it. I would love exciting socks, but I am beyond delighted with navy or black boys M&S school thermal socks in size 4-7. So thick, comfortable and wash and dry well. Three pairs for £8.

DorritLittle · 05/11/2022 09:20

I love socks!

But I am too disorganised not to end up with a massive pile of unmatched ones to pair. So I get the one colour thing although I haven't done it.

anon2022anon · 05/11/2022 09:23

@TeddyTrucks try happy socks- the men's ones are normally the same designs as the womens

Lidl occasionally gets in good socks too- I got some excellent banana ones from there. Or new look, though they're not great quality

My favourite socks are by BlueQ with swear words. Loads of jolly and fun and rude designs in women and men sizes.

Hoppinggreen · 05/11/2022 09:33

I hate socks, I avoid wearing them as much as possible (as my smelly trainers and blisters show). If I must wear them they go on when I leave the house and off when I come back in. If I wear them in the house I just know they are there
I don’t have any other sensory issues, it’s just socks- even nice cashmere or bamboo ones

Having size 9 feet I wish I could share the joy of all these colourful beautiful socks. Sadly it seems I either have to pay £10 per pair or buy men's socks, which are never as pretty...

Try TKMaxx. We have a Christmas tradition where my DSs get jolly socks and chocolate money every year. It's based on the things they first said they wanted Father Christmas to bring. When they were little it was Thomas The Tank or whatever, now I hit TKMaxx for brightly coloured striped and spots etc.

My current favourites are purple alpaca socks I bought in Finland last winter. I couldn't wear them in summer, my feet would boil.

WashAsDelicates · 05/11/2022 09:45

The joy of socks - absolutely!

Allow me to share a few of my favourites:

Apart from the sheer rebellious joyfulness of these socks, the ladies' styles fit my broad size 8 hooves.

Thin woollen socks in lovely colours. Fine enough to wear with smart shoes, yet warm, hard-wearing and machine-washable.

If you're prone to cracked heels, get them into good condition using a cream rich in urea, then keep them lovely and soft by wearing these overnight. Brilliant in summer when I live in sandals.

woodhill · 05/11/2022 09:47

I love my socks too and keep them for years

Never wear odd ones though

DuchessOfSausage · 05/11/2022 09:48

I love putting on brand new socks. I buy mainly all the same colour and style but also have fun ones

Have a look at the men's range in my United Oddsocks link.

Happy socks

But I also like the Seasalt ones

JeniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 05/11/2022 09:51

I love socks. I have a selection from Bam and Thought.

My issue is I need ones with no toe seam, so if any of your wonderful suggestions happen to be toe seam free please shout up.

hugoagogo · 05/11/2022 09:52

And don't forget the fact they always fit! Smile
I have what look like sensible grey socks for work, but in fact they have dinosaurs on. It's a nice feeling to know they are hiding in my shoes. (Weirdo)

Everydaywheniwakeup · 05/11/2022 09:54

I love socks but am also a giant footed woman. Men socks tend to be v boring. I want cherries or hearts or fluffy. Off to check out the recs on here ..

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 05/11/2022 09:56

but when the weather turns the socks make me feel better about it

A tiny pleasure is the day when I decide nope, it's too cold for bare feet any more and put my socks on.

spiderontheceiling · 05/11/2022 09:57

OP the solution to this problem is for you to keep your socks and everyone else have matching socks. Although not your toddler DD as my DC are older and I am missing cute outfits in quite a major way.
In our house, DH has black with multi coloured heels & toes and it's up to him whether he wears matching pairs or odd pairs, DD and DS have mass quantities of identical plain black socks and plain white socks which just get shoved in a basket and they take what they need each day and then I have all of my different socks which I carefully pair and put away. Everyone's needs are dealt with!

spiderontheceiling · 05/11/2022 09:58

PS am just about to put on my favourite thick socks for the first time this year
