Having shorter hair is great!

I was always scared to cut my hair but recently thought 'oh sod it' , and had it cut from boob length to a mid length bob (between jaw and shoulders) probably about 10 inches off, and I love it!
It looks so much healthier, saves me time in the morning, easier to wash, my hair doesn't get in the way, trapped in bra straps etc. It also has gotten me noticed and compliments and I feel more stylish!
I've seen a lot of mumsnet threads saying you'll regret cutting your hair and it ages you....in my opinion it's the opposite! Maybe the case if you go very short ie. a pixie, no offence top anyone who does that, it can look amazing! But it wouldn't suit me as I have strong features.
But to cut it a bit shorter, bob etc= would totally recommend it!

What are you on about?

I'd feel embarrassed after typing that.

Some of the most attractive women have short hair or bobs.

HouseofHolbein · 01/11/2022 16:57

Not the best photo but this is me out enjoying my 53rd birthday with my grade 2/3 buzzcut 👍

Having shorter hair is great!

@JOFFCV

Argh it was meant to me in reply to this at the beginning of the post.

'The trouble is and I know I’m gonna sound like a cow but every parent around the world has that hairstyle and it just shouts I have given up on looking attractive I will now have a bun and a bob'

I have a short hairstyle, had it cut off at 18 and have had it short (above ear level) for 23 years - I agree with you ☺️

@HiveBee Why is having a bob 'giving up on being attractive?'

It isn’t, you look great .

ZooTropia · 01/11/2022 17:02

Greenginghamdress · 01/11/2022 11:44

After.
It's a slight graduated bob so shorter at the back.

Really nice, lovely.
And this is what I always say with long hair. Long hair is just long hair, but you now have a style, not just 'hair'

musingsinmidlife · 01/11/2022 17:02

I went short and hated it. Took so much more time to style it. When it is long, I just pull it back in a long loose ponytail. You can't do that with short hair.

I grew it back out!

@HiveBee is just being a twat. It looks really nice

It looks great op. I'm wondering about doing this very thing! I might go shoulder length though, because I'm a wimp... Will attach hair now and idea... Laughing that I smile in a selfie that I then scribble out my face in...

I do sort of understand the comment about a Bob. I've also ended up with this perception that mums of a certain age cut their hair off. But then that's because they're really damn practical while also looking nice! So no bad thing.

Bottom pic is the one that would suit you

I’d say more cunt than cow…. What was the actual point of the comment anyway?

Anyway, I think it looks lovely, so much healthier.
Mine is only just slightly longer than yours and personally, if I grow mine any longer it looks horrible and straggly.
If it looks like ‘I’ve given up on looking attractive’ so be it. I’d rather that than an untidy/unhealthy looking mess

SirChenjins · 01/11/2022 17:22

What a gorgeous photo @HouseofHolbein you look so happy, and obviously having an absolute blast! 53's a great age to be Smile

I had such a good time! 80's disco in a slightly grotty pub with my friends 😁 I'm loving life now the kids are old enough to fend for themselves 🤣🤣

Mezmer · 01/11/2022 17:26

Am lobbing my long hair off tomorrow into a long (shoulder length) layered bob and fringe. I can’t wait!

Mezmer · 01/11/2022 17:28

Let’s face it, what we all don’t want is ‘helmet hair’ of any length.

dollyblack · 01/11/2022 17:29

The best thing i find about getting older is not giving a shit about what other people think about my hair/appearance/level of “attractiveness”!

Agree shorter hair is massively more convenient. I ended up not having a choice cause i had treatment which made me lose a lot of hair but feels nice and choppy now, much moreso than long hair!

op your hair looks fab. Other poster- what is wrong with looking like a parent?! What are you trying to look like??

OohMrBingley · 01/11/2022 17:31

I think @HiveBee is right, in that it is the haircut of choice of a lot of Mums - I have literally just had my bottom-of-shoulder-blades hair cut to chin length this weekend.

There is nothing to deny in this statement.

But such a haircut doesn’t equate to ‘giving up’. Yes, it is easier and quicker to style, but God knows, if I ‘gave up’, I’d have a bird’s nest on my head.

Long hair over a certain age isn’t a look many people can carry off. And many people with long hair look as if they’ve ‘given up’, too.

Shorter styles often look a lot more current and stylish than long hair, too.

So 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sounds like a brilliant night - you just can't beat an 80s disco in a slighty grotty pub that takes you back to your teens (hope the drinks were cheap?!). Life definitely gets easier as the kids can look after themselves Smile Here's the the rest of our 50s - chin chin! Wine

HouseofHolbein · 01/11/2022 17:34

@SirChenjins cheap and plentiful and included rather more shots than I think MN would approve of 🤣🤣

Exactly- it’s liberating.

Ironically though I (like many others) actually look better with low maintenance shorter hair.

i have dark auburn hair, which you would have thought would be great long, but it meh! Just above shoulders however makes my face look better somehow and gives me a cool girl look.

Jeffica · 01/11/2022 17:59

@Greenginghamdress
I buzzed it right down to a grade 2!
It feels like a fuzzy peach, I'd cut it down to a pixie previously after spending a decade trying to grow it out only to realise, I don't suit longer hair (despite it never going beyond my chin)
my maintenance cuts were costing me £35 every 6 weeks! I was spending about 15 minutes in the hairdressers for that money, ridiculous.
All hail the buzz cut! everyone can see my jangly earrings now.

roarfeckingroarr · 01/11/2022 18:06

I'm weighing up doing this on Thursday when I've booked a haircut.

My hair is long now, boob length. I want a similar style to yours now but I'm scared to chop so much!

Sorry. I quoted wrong.

Not you who should be embarrassed.

Sorry again.

Echobelly · 01/11/2022 18:13

My SIL has a theory that every woman cuts her hair short once in her life, and either she hates it and never does it again, or she loves it and mostly sticks to short hair after that. I think that's fairly accurate.

roarfeckingroarr · 01/11/2022 18:14

I'm worried about the "giving up" "mum cut" opinions. I'm due my second baby in January so it's pretty true for me! And DP and I are separating - as close friends and super close co parents - for some insurmountable reasons so at some point I would like to date again.

The women are attractive with or without having a bob haircut though that’s the point.

and if you do look fabulous with a shaved head well great amazing, embrace it
