Having shorter hair is great!

I was always scared to cut my hair but recently thought 'oh sod it' , and had it cut from boob length to a mid length bob (between jaw and shoulders) probably about 10 inches off, and I love it!
It looks so much healthier, saves me time in the morning, easier to wash, my hair doesn't get in the way, trapped in bra straps etc. It also has gotten me noticed and compliments and I feel more stylish!
I've seen a lot of mumsnet threads saying you'll regret cutting your hair and it ages you....in my opinion it's the opposite! Maybe the case if you go very short ie. a pixie, no offence top anyone who does that, it can look amazing! But it wouldn't suit me as I have strong features.
But to cut it a bit shorter, bob etc= would totally recommend it!

What is your hair like?

OP, it looks lovely. I've had mine cut to shoulder length (I have got a fringe though) and it looks lots thicker and in better condition. It looks trendier too.

Long and tatty apparently

Greenginghamdress · 01/11/2022 15:47

Nice to know so many people feel liberated/happy with shorter hair!

What grade did you use for a buzzcut? It's something I'd like to try one day. Don't have the features to pull it off, but may do anyway!!

Echo pp who said it's easier. I do a lot of exercise and today after running at work I just jumped in the shower, gave it a quick blowdry and brush and done. Before I'd be worried about getting the straighteners out etc and it looking messy.

I googled Lisa Cimorelli. Wow, she's so pretty! And looks amazing with her short hair.

It looks great op. I'm wondering about doing this very thing! I might go shoulder length though, because I'm a wimp... Will attach hair now and idea... Laughing that I smile in a selfie that I then scribble out my face in...

I do sort of understand the comment about a Bob. I've also ended up with this perception that mums of a certain age cut their hair off. But then that's because they're really damn practical while also looking nice! So no bad thing.

@Reluctantadult Mines that length with a fringe too on your idea. I love it.

Greenginghamdress · 01/11/2022 16:05

@Reluctantadult Thanks!

And I think that style would look fab on you.

Enjoy OP!

I can't wait until Thursday, when I getting my collarbone length hair cut short (jaw length undercut bob) for the first time in about 10 years. I almost always had cropped/very short hair between the ages of 8 and 35, but grew it out about 10 years ago. I always knew I'd cut it short again, but wasn't sure when until I read an article about how some women keep the same style all the time and some change theirs frequently, and remembering I used to be the latter and missing it! Also, having not had long hair as a child/young adult, I'm no good at doing anything with it.

It'll be interesting as first time I'll have had short hair while being middle aged - it meant that finding the right style was a it of a challenge, as anything beyond a basic bob risks looking a bit 'Krn' (which I know is a misogynist, ageist slur that should get in the sea, but I still don't want to look like one!).

Also will be funny that everyone who's known me for the less than 10 years will think this is an amazingly radical haircut for me, but no one else will bat an eyelid I expect.

I had mine cut a few months ago, it was long, now its a short bob, too short for me. In the heat my hair sticks to my neck. I cant put it up in a bobble. I dont feel it suits me like long hair did. I regret it & will be growing it back. I think i would be happier with a long bob which is what i actually asked for 🤦‍♀️

I did exactly the same thing years ago. I now focus on keeping my long hair in excellent condition so it's thick, shiny and bouncy. It takes effort but it's so, so worth it.

WinkleTinkle · 01/11/2022 16:19

I will make sure once ive grown it i trim it regularly to keep it healthy. So i dont then feel the need to chop it all off again. I have to say it was much healthier shorter. I try to let it naturally dry now so it doesnt get as damaged

JOFFCV · 01/11/2022 16:20

I love to see thick and in condition long hair on women. Different styles suit different people.

ArabeI · 01/11/2022 16:21

It looks lovely and agree that it suits some people more.

I have hair now just below waist length, and sometimes I love the idea of a bob but don't think it would suit me, and I like the versatility of being able to have a long plait or a bun. Though my hair isn't straggly.

TheFairyCaravan · 01/11/2022 16:25

HiveBee · 01/11/2022 13:55

The trouble is and I know I’m gonna sound like a cow but every parent around the world has that hairstyle and it just shouts I have given up on looking attractive I will now have a bun and a bob.

Absolutely no need whatsoever. Why post just to be nasty?

SirChenjins · 01/11/2022 16:25

That looks lovely OP! Far healthier than your longer hair, you did the right thing going for the chop Smile

ArabeI · 01/11/2022 16:29

Is a bun deemed having given up, also! I do this for one of my exercise classes as you don't want hair whipping round into your face. It's very practical and looks nice.

Paddleducks · 01/11/2022 16:30

I have fine frizzy wavy hair and had it cut into a bob. It looked great when straightened but crap when not. Without a doubt it was the highest maintenance hairstyle I have ever had. I am now in the slow and boring process of having to grow it back-I regret cutting it so much!

Echobelly · 01/11/2022 16:31

NB, re attractiveness of shorter hair, DH is very pleased as he loves me with shorter hair and has every now and again wistfully asked when I'm going up cut it again!

I think for older women we've thankfully, got past the 'You shouldn't have long hair after 40' or whatever nonsense, but the negative side effect is that some now see getting your hair cut as 'Oh now you're being middle aged and sensible and giving up on looking feminine', which is also bullshit.

BasiliskStare · 01/11/2022 16:33

I don't think a shortish bob is necessarily " mummy " I saw pussy galore on a James Bond recently - her hair looks fabulous in a kind of retro way ( well it was retro - ha ha ) . I've had my bra strap length hair cut recently as it just started to look a bit draggy so now have just longer than a chin length bob ( no fringe ) and when it's done nicely - do get the flicked out ends I reckon I look better with it

But each to their own .

MissPiggysPinkDress · 01/11/2022 16:43

I cut my hair in to a Bob, grown it out over a few years, then cut it in to a Bob again! I’ve also had my hair really short like Emma Watson too, and that’s ace, but I get annoyed with the frequent trips to the hair dresser to keep it looking nice

PeloFondo · 01/11/2022 16:45

I keep alternating between growing mine long and then having it all cut off Grin
Can never decide which I want but I never go shorter than jaw length too many chins for that

What are you on about?

Parentswriting · 01/11/2022 16:47

I posted on a similar thread last week but I went from a Bob (photo 1) to a spiky short cut (photo 2)

It was the best thing ever - no more straightening, able to finger dry - perfect 😊

Your hair looks lovely, I think it's a really stylish cut, and it suits you.

That other comment doesn't even make sense.

How odd to think that women have to be focused on being attractive to men at all times, it sounds exhausting.

I love your hair! It's my dream to have curly hair. Yours looks great short and long.

BigFatLiar · 01/11/2022 16:50

Looks good. I've always had short hair can't say it ever made me feel like I was giving up on looking attractive, it's the only way OH has seen me.
