I've bought circa £200 advents in the past - Cult Beauty a couple of years ago and Space NK the year before that, and absolutely loved them. No regrets. Loved opening them every day, got some products I really loved and had never tried before. I (whispers) don't enjoy the Christmas period so it felt like a treat to myself to make it more bearable.
However, the excitement has definitely waned for me - didn't get one last year in the end and probably won't this year. Not sure if its that the calendars feel a bit samey after a few years, or just my own fatigue. I do think that the process of analysing all the contents and seeing which is better value (which is needed when you're spending ££££ on a calendar) kind of kills the fun of it. This year and last I had every intention of getting one, then spent so long going back and forth and looking at the contents I ended up talking myself out of them. If I was gifted any of these calendars as a surprise I'd be delighted with them. Come next year I'll still be getting excited over the reveals all over again though.

Think I'm just going to get myself a luxury chocolate one this year (unless the Liberty fragrance ends up being reduced significantly). The Fortnums feating one also looks very tempting if I find a couple of hundred down the sofa.

@AnnieSnap and @Thefroglover

I think that people who buy calendars are people who would be buying beauty products anyway.

Things like: a nice serum, moisturiser, cleanser, SPF, retinol, mascara, blemish treatment, lip balm, candles etc are things that I would buy anyway, and it's usually much better value to buy as part of an advent calendar than to buy all these things individually.

I also like to try new products, and have discovered lots of the products I love through advent calendars.

If I buy a few good advent calendars and stock up on the products that I need, then I tend to buy very little else throughout the year.

Obviously you need to pick your calendars carefully to make sure that they actually contain the things that you want though!

MidnightMeltdown · 02/11/2022 13:32

If you end up not liking a product, it's much more disappointing if you've gone out and paid full price for that product, compared to if it's just something that you got a part of a collection of cut price stuff in a beauty advent imo.

Beauty calendars are a good way to try out new things I think.

AnnieSnap · 02/11/2022 13:38

@MidnightMeltdown 👍

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 02/11/2022 14:38

Yes everything @MidnightMeltdown said!

Im a keen budgeter so always keep track of what I'm spending on beauty products, I got one of the luxury calendars for the first time last year and my beauty spending this year has dropped considerably, all I've really bought is cleanser and SPF and foundation in terms of make up.

It's a great way to try new products without forking out for them and then ending up being rubbish, and my mum, sister and best friend are always keen to try anything I don't want!

Adventadventures · 02/11/2022 14:43

I buy a beauty advent every year and I think it saves me money in the long run if you choose carefully. I always start with a need list like moisturiser, hand cream , Serum bath foam etc . Then I look at what is in each and see which ones meet my needs best And then do the maths on what I would pay for the stuff anyway versus the advent price. If the maths add up I buy it. It the maths don’t I often just buy the item(s) I want cheaper on Ebay from an advent calendar item seller
The problem is some of the advents are too good value for me I am tempted to buy more than one!
I do the same with the edit boxes which are often amazing value

MidnightConstellation · 02/11/2022 14:45

I’ve learned a lot on this thread. I’ve never had an advent calendar before , never heard of Beauty Drop or Edit Boxes! Which edit boxes are generally the best value?

Solscat · 02/11/2022 15:00

Thank you to the people who posted about the latest in beauty offer over the weekend. I've today received my free 'summer box' but no calendar! Did anyone else receive them separately? The summer box came via yodel and I've had a 'sorry we missed you' card from Royal Mail so hoping that's the calendar itself!

Zeeza · 02/11/2022 16:31

@MidnightConstellation value depends on what you like. I want skincare over makeup, and certainly not haircare

So a box of bright red mac lipstick and hair mask and a 60 quid bottle of Omorovicza queen of Hungary mist and a pillow spray and a fake tan and eyelash curlers would have zero value to me even tho it might be "worth" £200.

Latest in beauty and hearst have lots of boxes you might not have seen. And next. Just see what works for you.

I weakened (I feel slightly bad, but in a good way 🙂) and just ordered the NUXE calendar (to add to my M&S one). I was being strict with myself because it was £75 on the NUXE website. Today I discovered it was £65 on Lookfantastic and I managed to get a 15% discount on that, so £55. I’m going to love it and it will cheer up those dark Winter days of December! 😀

ShhDoNotTell · 02/11/2022 16:56

Well, I’m ditching SpaceNK next year. I’m a loyal customer, spend loads with them, and have bought the advent for three years running. Seems like it’s taking the piss to drop it so much. I recognise it’s business, but I also get to choose where I shop. Doesn’t seem like it’s worth while buying any early.

polmnlj · 02/11/2022 17:06

I have only bought cheaper calendars,£50 or so. Some like M&S, Bodyshop,H&B and origins. Some heavily discounted like LF, birchbox etc. this year I have last year's Bodyshop and will see what is reduced. Would like to have JL but reduction should be 50% before I would buy.

MidnightConstellation · 02/11/2022 17:37

I’ve just gone through my stash. I have obscene amounts of stuff that will take the rest of my life to use up. How can I possibly keep an advent calendar now??

Oh God . I love Nuxe.

Neversaygoodbye · 02/11/2022 17:53

I refuse to buy luxury beauty products as I believe you can get just as effective skincare at much lower cost these days. So for that reason I avoid the luxury calendars, even though they look lovely. I like to get calendars with products I know I'll use and will potentially repurchase, that's the practical Capricorn in me. So I've gone for M&S this year as I needed some new thermals too (it's freezing in my office) and then I have an early January birthday so I buy one for then too, this year L'Occitane as I love their stuff. Last year I had H&B and Lumene, it definitely saved me some money for part of the year and I found some excellent new products.

AnnieSnap · 02/11/2022 17:55

I have only tried their floral oil so far (after a sample in last years M&S calendar). Given how fabulous that is, I’m very much looking forward to trying their other stuff. Sign up with a new email to get the extra 15% discount on it at Lookfantastic with the code New15

How do you get that offer ? I can only see 15% off selected items showing in their site . Thanks .

JenniferBooth · 03/11/2022 00:26

i dont buy advent calendars I usually treat myself to a Christmas gift set this time of year instead. Better value for money.
Been reading this thread with interest. I couldnt afford and wouldnt pay the Space NK and Cult Beauty prices even if i could.

It looks like one calendar has sold out ..........the cheaper No 7 one. I do love the brand and its one of their gift sets i usually treat myself to and sometimes end up with one from DM for Christmas too. She got me one last year.

polmnlj · 03/11/2022 19:23

15% off Glossybox ac with code JOYOFBEAUTY

ELLE £112

LookdeepintotheParka · 03/11/2022 20:29

Oh that Nuxe calendar is tempting 😬

I also really want L'Occitane but only if discounted. Will be keeping my eye on any BF deals as I'd be hoping to get 20% off🙏

Stokey · 03/11/2022 21:17

I've had a good look again at them all but think even with the discounts, JL is the one that is calling to me.

Do we think it will get discounted, I missed the offer a couple of weeks ago...

IDontKnowWhatYouMean · 04/11/2022 06:29

The GlossyBox calendar is half price via their TikTok shop - £49.50.

SpaceNK have a GWP with £250 spend which works with the advent calendar which is also 20% off. Luckily with the two other items I wanted my order came to exactly £250! Very excited now!
