M&S have changed their trouser length, but it's a secret!!

So, went to try on jeans today in M&S. I am a 5 ft 6 height, always been regular length.

Tried on regular length jeans, and they are too long. Happened to have a short pair in the changing room with me anyway and they were spot on.

My mum, who was also trying on jeans, wear a short length and they are too long for her. She's 5 ft 2. There is no extra short term length.

Spoke to a staff member and yes, they have changed the leg length but not advertising it. "Yes, lots of people have been caught out and complained about it!"

So beware if you are ordering or trying on and take a shorter than normal length in with you.

They have done this because trans women want to buy women's clothes, it's the same reason that m and s knickers are more roomy in the front these days.

They don't advertise it because they know they will lose customers who are already unhappy that their fitting rooms are no longer single sex.

LuciferRising · 07/09/2022 15:56

Looking online, height is increasing, but not at a significant rate. cm rather than inches.

How does this help transwomen?

Young people are so much taller now though that 5 4 is now pretty short, 6 ft is becoming quite normal and certainly 5 10 in 6th form and even younger?

Yes but young people don't shop in marks and Spencers. Let's be honest!

And @Yalz I am more than capable of altering my clothes but I just don't see why I should have to?!

blobby10 · 07/09/2022 16:01

This sounds quite an exciting development to me!!! I might even venture into M&S again if their trousers are longer! I'm 5ft 9" but 33" inside leg and even M&S long were a tad too short.

HiGunny · 07/09/2022 14:09

Who are the 7ft tall people that will fit the long length so? I'm only 5ft 2 so the short length usually suits me...do I not exist anymore in M&S world?

I definitely don't!!

I have to wait until they have something cropped and tapered.

im not quite 5ft.

goingtotown · 07/09/2022 16:02

£14 to shorten jeans in my local dry cleaners.

You mean 5'9+, no need to be odd about it. There's plenty of tall women aroundConfused

Why would they think that customers want to think of themselves as "extra short"? Really?

I absolutely loved the extra short range because I'm not even 5ft so very aware of my extra shortness 😀😀

VanCleefArpels · 07/09/2022 16:07

Well they have lost a customer in me then as I absolutely relied on M&S short as pretty much the only trousers/jeans I didn’t need to shorten. I will stalk Vinted instead for old versions. Talk about shooting themselves in the foot.

Yalz · 07/09/2022 16:14

"And @Yalz I am more than capable of altering my clothes but I just don't see why I should have to?!"

@Ilovelindor, I quite agree. Some of their ranges are not cheap, either.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 07/09/2022 16:16

Tall people and very short people should be able to buy jeans in M and S in all fairness! Getting jeans altered is expensive.

picklemewalnuts · 07/09/2022 16:21

Are we supposed to be wearing them with heels again? That's what scuppered me last time I dropped a length in M&S.

Regular = Regular length legs in heels.

Ilikewinter · 07/09/2022 16:26

Well thats shite for me, discovered thay work trousers and jeans fot perfectly in short. So thats another retailer that I cant shop at anymore and I refuse to buy trousers o3m line because so many just dont fit.

Franca123 · 07/09/2022 16:31

I've just been to the website and looked at jeans. Filtered by size, extra short. Only one result returned. So looks to me like my size has been discontinued? Am I missing something? I'm a bit buggered if this is the case.

Pigeon31 · 07/09/2022 16:32

I noticed this - was wondering if they are assuming people will want to wear heeled boots in winter or something so made them a bit longer.

Jellycatspyjamas · 07/09/2022 16:35

Have they applied the same thinking to skirts and dresses? I bought a dress in regular length which would usually hit about midi length on me (the dress is marketed as midi) but it’s ankle length on me. Annoying because it sounds like the short would be the length I’m actually looking for if they had just said lengths were changing.

Jellycatspyjamas · 07/09/2022 16:37

How does this help transwomen?

Biological men tend to have taller body frames than biological women and so need longer lengths in clothes. Not saying that’s the rationale behind the change, but longer clothes generally would favour biological men.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/09/2022 16:37

Glad I bought a couple of pairs earlier in the year. Hopefully by the time I need any more they'll have come to their senses.

Franca123 · 07/09/2022 16:51

I'd imagine everyone my height buys trousers at marks. There's no where else to go. And now they'll have lost that captive market. Love to understand the thinking here.

kimchifox · 07/09/2022 16:55

I'm actually happy about this - 5'9 and regular are always a bit short but long too long. For me this is excellent news. May now pop in to M&S !

RB68 · 07/09/2022 16:56

Drives me insane, they never stock my size in short so I buy regular and recently noticed I now have to remove 3 inches, prev I could just turn hem once and tack up and perfect now I have to slice a couple of inches away

ErrolTheDragon · 07/09/2022 16:56

Next is the other place which I've found quite good for petite length trousers and jeans.

TattiePants · 07/09/2022 17:07

I’m 5ft 11 and have always worn long trousers in M&S. a few months ago I had to send all the long length trousers I’d ordered back and exchange for regular length. In my day to day life I don’t come across that many women who are taller than me so who on earth are buying the long length now?

LookdeepintotheParka · 07/09/2022 17:15

Not just M&S - I've noticed short length trousers in other stores are now too long and I'm not particularly petite (5'3) I thought the average woman was 5'4 although I know younger generations are getting taller?

Where are we meant to buy petite lengths now? Surely M&S customers are mostly on the <ahem> older end of the spectrum? 🤔
