Anyone wearing a gilet this year?

I liked the long oversized ones I saw last year but didn’t get one thinking they were a fad. They are still selling them in lots of stores and online so was thinking of getting one. I saw a short one with a hood on the M&S website from Joules which was almost exactly like I wore at least 15 years ago and it’s still in the back of a spare wardrobe. I might dig it out now!

I’ve got a Uniqlo ultra light down one, it’s quite fitted but great under a coat if you’re not wearing a chunky sweater. I might wear it under a sweater indoors this winter!

I brought one last autumn from primark i had to buy a xs as it came up very big, I'm normally a a size 12, it's knee length I love it, might splash out on a better quality one.

Jets121 · 07/09/2022 18:08

I wear one permanently in my cold old house in winter. Also layer them under coats in very cold weather

picked up a lovely Mint Velvet one from Vinted for a tenner

CarrieMoonbeams · 07/09/2022 18:18

Yes, an apple green Joules one that I bought from eBay about 3 years ago. I like it and don't care if I look like a farmer or indeed am unfashionable - I like to tell myself that I look cute in it 😚

SunnieShine · 07/09/2022 18:21

If that's the same as a Body Warmer, then yes.

Binfire · 07/09/2022 18:30

They do me no favours at all, I look so dumpy in them. I wish I could but no, I won’t be wearing one this year or any year.

Custardcreambiccy · 07/09/2022 22:34

Just ordered one from M&S specifically to wear at home over the autumn/winter when the heating's off. Online it looks like it's top-of-thigh length (I hate draughty gaps round the kidneys) and also doesn't have the usual stand-up collar.

I'll have to wait for it to arrive to see if I look completely spherical in it. But snugness is the aim.

Jojoanna · 07/09/2022 22:45

Nope ,, think they are awful , also don't understand them , don't your arms get cold/wet?

Twillow · 07/09/2022 22:48

I will be wearing a short one indoors. I detest the long ones though, they look like those things you insulate hot water tanks with.

LookItsMeAgain · 07/09/2022 22:52

I'm interested in getting one. Anyone care to post a link to what they're talking about?

I have always wondered this too

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 07/09/2022 22:57

Not to get all sciencey but this article explains how keeping your torso warm helps keeps the rest of you warm

www.summitpost.org/the-science-of-warmth/359562

When your core gets cold your body's natural defense is stop sending blood to the extremities and keep it for vital organs and the brain. Therefore the best solution for cold hands and feet is often to heat up your core.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 07/09/2022 22:58

I don't love them for their beauty but they're handy if you're gardening, for example, and want to keep warm but don't want bulky coat arms getting in the way of your snipping and pruning.

SILdidittoo · 08/09/2022 07:29

I like wearing them for dog walking, means I'm toasty warm but still able to throw the ball without my arms feeling restricted. Plus they usually pack away really neat into their own pockets, so if it's an early walk and still a bit chilly I wear the gilet but then can take it off later and sling it in my bag. They're just really handy for Spring and Autumn days when you're not quite sure how the weather is going to be and you don't want to be too bundled up.

AuntieMarys · 08/09/2022 07:42

I was looking at the very long ones as I'm tall...but I have the same question as others...what about your arms! I hate jumpers and anything bulky.

Fatballs · 08/09/2022 07:43

I wear one every year.

Fatballs · 08/09/2022 07:45

If that's the same as a Body Warmer, then yes.

My husband calls them quilted waistcoats.

Spudlet · 08/09/2022 07:48

I have a very old, faded raspberry coloured joules one which is excellent for spring and autumn - all the benefits of a coat (pockets!) but with a bit of ventilation before it gets too cold. I definitely look like a farmer because it inevitably gets worn with my wellies and has the pockets full of poo bags…! But after spending the summer doing dog walks in clothing with inadequate pockets, it’s always nice to dust the gilet off.

Doingmybest12 · 08/09/2022 07:51

I once heard on a style programme that if you wear one you look like you are just popping out to move the car. They are really useful for the in between days and at home but I always think about this comment .

I was thinking about arms.
What do you wear to keep your arms from getting cold or wet (if its raining)?

I have a blue one and I'd love to wear it but never know what with because of the dilemma of cold arms 😂

girlmom21 · 08/09/2022 08:07

I bought one from mountain warehouse a couple of weeks ago because I wanted one that was thick. I love it and I think they look cute.

Re: the arms question, they're much less restrictive than a coat which is very helpful when you've got a one year old who's just learning to walk as it's much more comfortable picking them up.

Playplayaway · 08/09/2022 08:19

This is what they always make me think of

Caspianberg · 08/09/2022 08:23

@Gubu - sorry it’s just a local little shop, not online. But it’s boiled wool basically, curved cut edges and one button in middle fastening.

this place does similar alweroshop.nl/volwassenen/dames/bodywarmers-gilets.html

21reasons · 08/09/2022 09:00

Oh love those Etsy wool ones. They look really easy to wear.
