So if cardigans are ‘out, dated and frumpy’

Then what do you wear? Or is shivering the height of cool?!

To be honest I think saying cardigans are ‘out’ is like saying jeans are out, or trainers are dated. Certain shapes/styles might become very fashionable and then go out of fashion, but there will always be some type that looks current. I see lots of younger women at uni wearing cropped cardigans with patterns or in fun colours with crazy big cords and big chunky boots! It’s such a fun look although not my style.

And shacket is a crime against the English language

Yes.

CredibilityProblem · 01/07/2022 22:51

The answer is obviously slightly oversized linen or linen-look blazers. I'm biased because I've loved a linen blazer for decades so I'm delighted that they're all over the shops now.

Rookieoftheyear · 01/07/2022 22:53

All the cool kids wear fairisle

EmmaH2022 · 01/07/2022 22:57

Yes, I'm not one for flowery dresses.

linen - I can't cope with the ironing and creasing, plus that only works if it's warm. And linen is not informal enough for my life.

Shackets
Oversized denim jacket
Denim shacket

Denim jackets are also out, according to that other thread. And biker jackets. Might wrap myself in a blanket and be done with it. 😐

Aria999 · 02/07/2022 02:19

Um, cardigans....

ErrolTheDragon · 02/07/2022 06:27

I've not done much shopping for a while, I might be tempted by a linen jacket (or more likely linen look so it doesn't look great for ten minutes and then a crumpled mess. And not oversized, as those simply look too big if you're petite. Like you're a kid dressing up in your mum's clothes.)
But they have much more limited use than most cardis.

UseOfWeapons · 02/07/2022 06:58

Cardigans are superb, and the ultimate in high fashion! At least, that’s my view. However, I’m a total scruff bag, who likes to be comfy, and wears layers, so probably not the right person to reply!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 01/07/2022 16:37

I don’t give a fuck. Cardigans are great. There is tellingly no equivalent male term for “frumpy”.

This!!!!

NaturalScone · 02/07/2022 13:43

i fuckin love my cardis and I am style bitch!

100problems · 02/07/2022 13:56

Linen; lovely on the hanger. Like a yacht's sail wrapped round your arse once on.

Love a cardi. I always think Sarah Chatto looks fab in hers.

Wouldloveanother · 02/07/2022 14:02

I tend to wear sweatshirts, hoodies, denim jacket… it’s basically 2005 again

flutterbybabycakes · 02/07/2022 14:21

A cardigan.

flutterbybabycakes · 02/07/2022 14:22

I'm not frumpy by any means. I'm also not outdated, I'm classic. I've always had the same style and always will. I like my comfy clothes. I love a nice chunky cardi over a streamlined leggins and top combo. I own 20 cardigans.
Genuinely unaware how the opinions of randoms is even worth thinking about.

endofthecorridoor · 02/07/2022 14:25

TheMidnightBell · 01/07/2022 17:36

You do realise, right, that fashion journalists saying that certain types of clothing are 'in' or 'out' is just a con to get you to buy more clothes to support the fashion industry, without whom they wouldn't have a job? It's all made up nonsense to make you buy more things. Just ignore it all & wear what you like.

This was my exact thought reading that thread. I’m sticking to dresses and denim jackets. Absolutely ridiculous comments

user1477391263 · 02/07/2022 14:30

Isn't "cardigans are frumpy" a bit like saying "shoes are frumpy" or "dresses are frumpy" or "bras are frumpy"?
Cardigans are a wardrobe staple, surely.

CredibilityProblem · 02/07/2022 19:00

SummerPuddings · 02/07/2022 07:53

This!!!!

Coincidentally, I think the male equivalent for frumpy is "cardigan wearer".

LouraLoura · 02/07/2022 19:07

I suppose the twinset look might be 'dated' but it is a silly word, I would say it is dated to even call something ....dated nowadays. Anything goes, although subcultures and social groups do tend to imitate those that they look up to.

I like a linen cardi with shorts in summer, to pop on if a breeze comes along. A nice quality slouchy thing if im not in the mood for a hoodie!

I used to have a lovely cropped gold thread cardi that looked gorgeous over a cami or buttined with jeans for a night out. It really depends which cardi and how you wear it.

O only ever hear this word trotted out on MN though, I don't think anyone out there even cares. Using 'dated' as a descriptor does smack of some sort of anxiety or confusion about how to dress.

Writing a fairly innocuous item from one's wardrobe is a ludicrous as eliminating a food group, but people do get all up in their gills about it. I blame modern decadence: we have so many choices we don't know what to do with them!

Ikeabag · 02/07/2022 20:23

I am sat reading this in a short dress, leggings, and a grandad style cardigan. If they've all gone out then they'll all be well cheap on ebay. does napoleon dynamite yesss - I bet half the people saying they've gone out of style look good in stuff that makes me look ridiculous. Fashion doesn't give a shit about body shapes. Those tiered dresses (now they make me shudder) are all over everyone right now and they really, really don't suit everyone. Having shuddered - a friend wore one the other night and looked utterly lovely. I just wish... eh I don't really care what people do. I just don't get that people really do just bin off clothes they lust after when the next new style filters through, regardless of whether it suits them or not. It's like a tipping point hits when they've seen something enough times and then it's all they want.

Ikeabag · 02/07/2022 20:26

Ooh I just bought 2 denim jackets, too. Excellent. What else is going out of style so I can have everyone's old shit for a fraction of the price?

LemonsOnSaleAgain · 02/07/2022 20:40

No I think twinsets are in again now, they are called 'Co-ords' but only one of the items will be fitted (plus cropped/bodycon).

Ikeabag · 02/07/2022 20:43

Lemons, is that a misheard bowie lyric?

LemonsOnSaleAgain · 02/07/2022 20:48

Ikeabag · 02/07/2022 20:43

Lemons, is that a misheard bowie lyric?

Indeed it is - well spotted! Grin

WitchWithoutChips · 02/07/2022 20:52

I love cardigans. My favourites are grandad-style with a pocket for a hanky. Bonus points for elbow patches.

I’ve been looking for a cricket cardigan (as in a cabled cricket sweater in cardigan form) for years without success. I think I am going to have to admit defeat and knit myself one.
