So if cardigans are ‘out, dated and frumpy’

Then what do you wear? Or is shivering the height of cool?!

I bought a sleeveless cardi (knitted gilet maybe?) a few weeks ago and I love it. I don't care if it's the most deeply uncool garment ever. It's flattering, warm, not sweaty. Mind you as an hourglass diastasis shape I'm never ever giving up skinnies so I'm probably the most deeply uncool 40spmething in the world. Oh well. I'm warm, comfortable and don't look like I weigh 9 stone more than i actually do!

If cardigans, and skinnies, and denim jackets, and everything else on that thread are so horribly passé, why are they everywhere?

I recently decided that I don't have enough money to keep getting rid of perfectly wearable clothing just to replace it with a similar but slightly differently styled item. Eg, I have a few perfectly good quality fine knit/cotton button up cardigans but to be in style I should get rid of these and replace them with a chunkier ones even though they don't need replacing. I have the same issue with trousers (too skinny), summer dresses (not the right length), t-shirts (too fitted/too long). Fashion seems to be changing too quickly for my finances to keep up with so I'm just going to have to go round in my serviceable but unfashionable clothing.

The whole fashion industry doesn't really seem in keeping with the idea of sustainability or the cost of living issues.

I read a newspaper article a couple of weeks ago that said cardigans are sexy!

Granted it was a local NZ paper but I'll go with it.

TheMooch · 01/07/2022 20:31

Me and my collection of 23 cardigans refute the dastardly claim they are frumpy.

(OK I have 1 that could be classed as not cool but it was knitted especially for me so I love it more).

April90 · 01/07/2022 20:32

I love a cropped cardigan but I have longer ones and I will 100% be wearing mine 🙂

So do I, no yucking it over your head, so practical

I used to love jumpers but then at a certain age your temperature controls go awol and you realise you want something you can take on or off easily, or wear open or closed.

abblie · 01/07/2022 20:43

I live in cardigans 🤣

Oversized anythings on small women simply look too big and sloppy.

My favourite lounging around cardi at the moment is one I picked up in next for myself then realised my DD (21 at the time) would like it and they only had one in our size in store so I gave it to her. She liked it so much she bought herself 2 more online, but then kindly donated one back to me.Grin

ClinkeyMonkey · 01/07/2022 21:15

I have loads of cardigans. I love them. I don't have any warm feelings whatsoever towards any of my other clothes😃

What do you suggest?

JaneJeffer · 01/07/2022 21:24

Cardigans forever.

IamEarthymama · 01/07/2022 21:28

ListerLess how lovely!

My wonderful mother used to knit the most gorgeous jumpers for me in the 80s, mohair wit fancy sleeves with beads.

I adored them, such happy memories.

TotalRhubarb · 01/07/2022 21:28

I get that cardigans are ‘out’ and have been for ages. I get they’re considered frumpy. I can even see it myself that they’re looking a little dated.... but.... but....

We live in BRITAIN. It is NOT a warm climate. We need cardigans to keep us warm. Saying ‘no cardigans’ is kind of like saying ‘no trousers, only shorts’. Absolutely fine on the17 days per year out of the 365 that are actually warm enough for that to be a runner. Absolutely fucking useless as an idea the rest of the time. Bonkers, in fact.

There was a time, many moons ago, when I was prepared to suffer to look hip. Would freeze in 1C at night in the winter to wear a ‘cool’ jacket, instead of one that actually did its job of keeping me warm. Would blister my heels and make the balls of my feet burn in ludicrous heels.

But I’m just too old for that shit now. I’m not 18 any more. I’m so over suffering to appear ‘in’. I’m DONE and drawing a boundary. I’m staying warm. And if that means wearing a cardi? So be it.

Heytheredeliah · 01/07/2022 21:45

I read that thread about what people think looks dated and I was so surprised to see cardigans on there! I love a thin long cardigan to wear in the summer or a cream chunky cable knit to wear in winter. I don't care if I look dated

hatchyu · 01/07/2022 21:45

cardigans aren't out though, a lot of stuff on that thread is outdated.

hatchyu · 01/07/2022 21:46

the opinions are outdated.

SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 01/07/2022 21:47

Saying cardigans are out is like saying trousers are out. They are a basic staple and there are so many styles it’s impossible for all of them to be out.

SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 01/07/2022 21:50

And shacket is a crime against the English language

ErrolTheDragon · 01/07/2022 21:55

What do you suggest?

A nice cardigan of course. Where 'nice' means whichever of the many styles suits you and the occasion. Unless a jacket of some sort is more appropriate.

PuppyMonkey · 01/07/2022 22:01

Do bear in mind that the people saying cardigans are “out” are the same people wearing hideous frilly orange flowery tiered dresses which are apparently dead trendy now.
