Is this dress inappropriate for a wedding?

humanpotato · 25/06/2022 09:00

My boyfriend said he thinks this dress isn't appropriate for a wedding because it's red? This is new to me? The last two weddings we've been to I've wore red and he didn't say anything. So I'm just wondering what peoples thoughts are is this appropriate?

I don't know what thread this belongs in!

Based on the mumsy (and equally awful) dress suggestions from posters on here I'm going to hazard a guess and say that they are of a socio-demographic that do not understand the "fashion style" of modern times. The flamenco dancer comments confirm this as it's exactly the type of comment my mother would make.

@AWobABobBob

I said it looks like a naff flamenco night dress - it’s the first thing that struck me when I saw the photo. I’m 32 and decidedly not mumsy (in fact, I’m not a mum at all) so your assumption hasn’t been confirmed by anything.

Not liking that dress has nothing to do with being of the " socio-demographic that does not understand the "fashion style" of modern times

For what it's worth, I'm 62 and have had a lifetime of regular compliments from random strangers, men and women, about what I've been wearing. That dress is hideous.

I'm 55 so I'm not au courant with the latest fashion trends.

I've also had too many glasses of white wine and my comments were very much written with tongue in cheek, a playful glint in my eye, and a slooshing of ice cubes.

I sincerely apologise if my flippant comments caused any offence.

The OP looks stunning and could frankly wear a potato sack and she'd look lovely.

It's not offence for me , but puzzled head scratching that you associate red with being a prostitute. Did you think Chris de Burgh was singing about a prostitute??

Charlize43 · 25/06/2022 16:24

I still think unless you work with maracas it's just not appropriate for anything else... especially a wedding.

No, he wasn't.

Traditionally it comes from the bible as the Whore of Babylon is sitting on a red beast - which along the years in art & literature was somehow translated into a red dress.

It also reminded me of Bette Davis in Jezebel (1938) who scandalises everyone at a society ball by wearing a red crinoline. Such a great film!

KatieKline · 25/06/2022 16:34

Weddings generally as a rule are classy, the dress isn't classy at all. I wouldn't have worn it to a wedding in my 20s, nothing to do with age and purely the style.

Its more appropriate for clubbing. Although the sleeves look weird.

Nice dress if you’re 50+

Tedzer · 25/06/2022 16:35

Sally090807 · 25/06/2022 10:54

Something like this is far nicer in my opinion

The red polka dot maxi is lovely- where's it from pls?

inappropriateraspberry · 25/06/2022 16:38

Please don't change into it for the evening. No one has an outfit change except the bride and groom if they want.
Just get something more suitable.

Daisyroseandhyacinth · 25/06/2022 16:40

It’s a hideous dress.

Yes, those sleeves are hideous and clearly not the OPs style. Why suggest it?

Pippinbird · 25/06/2022 16:41

I think most people on here don’t understand that ruffles/off the shoulder/ balloon sleeve look is absolutely everywhere. There will be hundreds of variations in the shops right now. There will be other dresses like this at the wedding. However, you have to be a young thing to wear it and pull it off.

I think we can all agree most of us aren’t in that category, even those who are 32.

I think posters are far too distracted by the models various poses. In reality we wouldn’t be seeing the slit up the thigh etc.

The OP will look stunning in the dress, it won’t upstage the bride who is always the focus of the day.

Wearwhatyoulikeevnatweddings · 25/06/2022 16:42

I love the dress, it’s absolutely stunning and you OP have the right look for it!
I looked on PLT and noticed it exists in 6 colours, I love the cream one and I would probably wear the cream one.

Obv if I wore it I'd have a strapless bra on with it but my bf when he saw it in person said he really likes it and has changed his mind 😂 🤷🏻‍♀️

You look good op but have you done a test run with that thigh split?
Can you dance or sit down without flashing it all?

Minimalme · 25/06/2022 16:53

You look lovely in it - red is a great colour on you!

Some weddings are more dressy than others because some groups of people are more dressy than others.

When I went to a 30th birthday party in my early 20s, the host made a snide comment about how my dress was nice and was I going for the slutty look?

I felt really embarrassed all evening as all the women there were older than me and wore considerably more expensive dresses.

I now realise that the host was probably intimidated because I had a knock out figure and was very beautiful, not that I realised it at the time.

I'm 62 and wouldn't wear it! Shiny polyester? No ta.

"It also reminded me of Bette Davis in Jezebel (1938) who scandalises everyone at a society ball by wearing a red crinoline. Such a great film!"

If memory serves, Rhett makes Scarlett wear a red dress to a party, to shame her after she was caught canoodling with Ashley.

You really suit red, OP, but the style and colour combined are a bit much for a wedding - if the dress was in green or blue, for example, you could probably get away with it.

Ah, I see you've already got it. Well, you've a gorgeous figure and beautiful skin, so I hope you enjoy wearing it and have a fabulous time.

(I also hope the bride is the confident sort who's too busy enjoying her day to notice or care what anyone else is wearing!!)

DailyMaui · 25/06/2022 16:58

Is Margerita Pracatan yer mum?

inappropriateraspberry · 25/06/2022 16:58

It looks great on you, but no way appropriate for a wedding. Nothing wrong with the colour but it is just too much. Perfect for a night out or on holiday, but not a wedding. Too busty.

True, that’s horrible dress. Truly.
