...is this look still a thing? Or will I look like a bit of a dinosaur?

Dd turns 18 in a few months and we have a weekend away planned some of which will involve a lot of walking but still want to look a bit glam from the ankles up!

I'm mid/late 40s and considerably overweight (but working on it!) and having given up work 18 months ago to care for my Olds my wardrobe currently consists of uber smart office wear and heels or jeans, tatty tops and cheap pumps, so any additional fashion tips would be gratefully received!

Crikey. Style is so subjective 😳😂.

I can highly recommend these www.schuh.co.uk/womens/superga-2341-alpina-cotu-black-trainers/1971317070/ from a comfort point of view. They're "my" style and have just wore them on holidays with long and short dresses and palazzo pants. I dress to express myself with comfort being incredibly important (plantar fascitis and lots of chronic pain). They are not waterproof. I've just bought a second pair.

I wish for you to find your style and what makes you happy. Be confident and rock it. Confidence is most important. I am not and have never desired to be fashionable - to me that is boring and predictable. So you wear what you want and feel happy and confident in. Maybe try things on order and send back to find what suits you .

Im in my 40s, size 16--18. Good luck. ♥

Ooh I like those @Bagelsandbrie and I think the middle trainers are also my favourites.

Well tbh, as @TalesOfDrunkennessAndCruelty says, the ones with the rainbow bling are probably my absolute favourites but as they're Kurt Geiger not really in my budget.

That said I'd they got enough votes on here I might be tempted..😁

If you are doing a lot of walking in a dress, make sure you wear cycling shorts underneath to avoided the dreaded chub rub (bitter voice of experience here!)

That's what I thought when maxi dress was mentioned. Is there a worse pain?
I bought long legged control pants which just cut my circulation off then trued those thighs bands. Just went back to trousers in the end because I was going through too much talc Grin

DrBrennerFan · 07/05/2022 12:07

Discovered Mike air max brought a perfect condition pair from eBay dead cheap new laces live in them I’m 55 and love them. Don’t do dress or skirts now.

TalesOfDrunkennessAndCruelty · 07/05/2022 12:24

Oh, I hadn’t noticed they were Kurt Geiger. Mind you, my trainers-that-aren’t-trainers are Kurt Geigers bought for a song at TK Maxx. Lead me not into temptation, as some folk say.

OK...have found a few chunkier options...whaddya think?

Big no from me. Trainers are hideous unless being worn for sport or training.

Plimsolls are fine with a dress.

These are very comfy if you'd like a slight twist on white trainers: www.toms.com/uk/alpargata/natural-crochet-womens-alpargata-slip-on/10016241.html

Those are lovely- those are far more idly rambling around a French village look , which is nice.

Have you tried them?

MintyCedricRidesAgain · 07/05/2022 12:39

@KimikosNightmare you're the second person to have suggested those. They're very pretty and I can see the attraction but crochet really isn't very 'me' tbh and I worry about it rubbing.

@TalesOfDrunkennessAndCruelty I'm always happy to be led into temptation where shoes are concerned and the KG site is a rabbit hole I could cheerily launch myself into.

I bought a pair of KGs in the sales years ago but was talked into returning them...I've never forgotten those bloody shoes and have regretted it ever since.

Off to check out TK Maxx!

These threads are always so funny… The crochet Toms are hideous to me. They’re like something my Mum would have worn in the 80s 😳😆 I think if anything these threads show we should just all stop worrying and wear what we like because chances are half will love it and half will hate it anyway!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/05/2022 08:37

I'm bored of white trainers, and prefer midi to maxi generally. I'm sure it's not at all fashionable, but I'm enjoying wearing black/tan New Balance with dresses at the moment.

This is exactly what I'm wearing atm except my black & tan trainers are from Mint Velvet (same style as NB's). They are years old but sooo comfy

Having sent decades tottering along in uncomfortable footwear, I've decided I won't doing that any more and wear trainers pretty much all the time so whilst I'm aware it's a 'uniform', I don't care mostly

Joyfulflowers · 07/05/2022 12:49

@MintyCedricRidesAgain I meant to add that yes you can definitely wear trainers with dresses, maybe swap the denim jacket for another type-cotton/canvas-a friend bought a lovely khaki one from Zara recently which she wore with a dress and it looked great.

Fitflop have definitely upped their game style wise so maybe check out some sandals to wear instead of trainers

This is so true.

I imagine there's a few people reading this thread and tactfully refraining from giving their opinions on the KGs with the bling, but I'm seriously considering holding off buying anything and seeing if they either end up in a sale (or TK Maxx!) or I can find a way to justify spending stupid money on a pair of trainers.

Not to be a lifestyle guru, but seriously, wear what you like - since I started doing that, I'm much happier and have less social anxiety. Giving no fcks is very liberating. Also, definitely still a look - the young and gorgeous are wearing white trainers with mini dresses, I was watching some girls visiting bars in our city centre just a couple of weeks ago - dolled up with makeup and gorgeous. Wish it had been a thing when I was their age, instead of walking home barefoot because heels! I still love a maxi dress, trainers & denim jacket, I like what I see in the mirror and it's comfy. However - chub rub shorts are essential! Enjoy London.

Personally not a fan especially as its a trend which can age someone fairly quickly, throw in a denim jacket et voila you may as well have put blue eye liner on and had a perm. The Maxi dress itself can be a knife-edge piece of clothing, the right one on the right age and shape can look amazing, that same dress in a bigger size on an older person doesn’t always seem to offer the same forgiving benefits.

So what would you suggest? What sort of jacket for example?

gothereagain · 07/05/2022 13:08

Bagelsandbrie · 07/05/2022 08:57

This is true. My dd is 19 and the “uniform” for her age group seems to be flared jeans as low waisted as can be without being obscene, coupled with a cropped tight cardigan or very short cropped top, with a pierced belly button and loads of 90s style jewellery and chunky trainers or huge platform dr martens. I’m 41 and a size 18, if I went out like that I think I’d cause a few stares. Which is fine, but I’m just making the point that there are different “looks” for different age groups despite what everyone wants to think and that’s fine!

That was "uniform" at 16, I can't quite believe I'm old enough to remember it the first time around. I loved it. And I looked good. Would look hideous if I wore it now though!

hattie43 · 07/05/2022 13:26

It was last years uniform for me and shall be this years aswell lol

Staffy1 · 07/05/2022 13:30

Trainers with big floaty dresses just make people look like they’ve escaped from an asylum.

So what should women who are the 'wrong' age and shape wear then? A mini dress? Banned from dresses altogether? If one gets to an age and size when the most forgiving of garments fails to 'forgive' them, what should they wear?

ArabeI · 07/05/2022 13:39

I've seen a few people wearing this sort of thing just this weekend.

I really like the look, though it's not one for me as I don't think it would suit me (trainers, even leisure trainers, I only wear with gym/exercise/dance clothes).

That's sort of true, even although it's a look I like (as long as the trainers are plimsolls)

Most, if not all of Neverendingdust's post is subjective (or if you prefer, nonsense)

ImAvingOops · 07/05/2022 15:24

OP, I bought those LG ones in black. But I wasn't quite sure snd pusyed a thread on S&B. Once it was pointed out that the gems looked like infinity stones I couldn't unsee it and had to send them back.
I liked the Skechers. But my dd says Skechers are old lady trainers - you may or may not care about this. I think I'm about to buy some as my old Skechers were sooo comfortable!

ImAvingOops · 07/05/2022 15:25

LG = KG. Not sure what happened there!

Myshitisreal · 07/05/2022 15:41

Have you looked at air and Grace. I have a gray leopard print pair. 🤭

Each to their own. ♥ I'm sure I've seen superga rainbow trainers. I mean if I were you I'd go all out 😂
