White trainers and maxi dresses...

...is this look still a thing? Or will I look like a bit of a dinosaur?

Dd turns 18 in a few months and we have a weekend away planned some of which will involve a lot of walking but still want to look a bit glam from the ankles up!

I'm mid/late 40s and considerably overweight (but working on it!) and having given up work 18 months ago to care for my Olds my wardrobe currently consists of uber smart office wear and heels or jeans, tatty tops and cheap pumps, so any additional fashion tips would be gratefully received!

I don’t wear trainers with dresses as it doesn’t suit me (tall with big feet…I look like a clown!). But it’s a perfectly acceptable style. I live in London and see teens right up to older women wearing various versions of this ‘uniform’. Go for it.

MintyCedricRidesAgain · 07/05/2022 15:53

I'm sure I've seen superga rainbow trainers. I mean if I were you I'd go all out 😂

Sadly they're out of stock!

@ImAvingOops I had to Google 'infinity stones'...can't say it would bother me...I used to be the proud owner (in fairly recent years) of a set of Wonder Woman underwear!

They were great trainers, quite heavy though.

DockOTheBay · 07/05/2022 15:59

If you will be doing a lot of walking in a dress I would recommend the Snag "chub rub shorts" to prevent chafing. I found them really good for me when overweight.

BeeLady15 · 07/05/2022 16:21

I wear veja trainers with maxi and midi dresses. I also wear Nike air and Superga trainers. I’m tending to wear leather biker jackets or bomber jackets. The denim jacket is a bit of a cliche these days but I do like it and you won’t look terrible. Enjoy your break. Don’t forget a decent cross body bag or a backpack.

iggybop · 07/05/2022 16:32

Another option is chunky sandals. Like DMs or similar as i feel silly in trainers and dress

Nice jeans, chunky sandals or
Trainers, plain top nice
Chunky or layered necklace and blazer

MintyCedricRidesAgain · 07/05/2022 17:18

@iggybop jeans and blazer is one of my favourite looks and will probably be doing that on the other days.

How flexible are the Doc Marten sandal soles? They look very solid and if there's no give I'll probably fall flat on my face.

I like these though!

Chub rub agony it really is in fact I stopped wearing skirt because I’d have to wear leggings underneath I don’t bother now. Jeans all the way.

That's what I thought when maxi dress was mentioned. Is there a worse pain?
I bought long legged control pants which just cut my circulation off then trued those thighs bands. Just went back to trousers in the end because I was going through too much talc Grin

Buy a pair of the M+S ones I posted earlier- they really are a game changer!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/05/2022 19:49

Sorry but those crochet things are vile.

I was out in town today and did a bit of research. One in five-ish women over about 30 wearing a midi (not maxi) dress with trainers (although fewer white trainers and denim jackets than previously). One in 5-ish wearing very short dresses, high heels and orange tan. One in 5ish in jeans. The others mostly in leggings or really weird skin-tight things like babygrows, and others still in winter clothes and boots, weirdly.

If you are doing a lot of walking in a dress, make sure you wear cycling shorts underneath to avoided the dreaded chub rub (bitter voice of experience here!)

I find using a stick deodorant where you get chafed thighs stops it happening

Trainers with big floaty dresses just make people look like they’ve escaped from an asylum.

What about some more retro New Balance style ones, I got these as my new spring trainers. I thought they were fun and colourful I have been really surprised at how many compliments I've had. Super comfortable and lightweight too.

I have white stan smiths and air force 1s too but they are both leather and quite heavy and hot during summer.

They do some paler colours too eg pastel ones

I wear that all the time and I'm 26

SaltNPepperSquid · 08/05/2022 19:49

Today I got a pedicure and three out of four women were wearing this style (I’m on London).

Model-gorgeous women in her late 20s/early 30s wearing a lilac midaxi dress with white & gold Gucci trainers.

Teenager in black & white floral maxi dress and white Air Force 1s.

Woman of about my age (mid 40s) wearing red & white floral midi dress & white low tops Converse.

Think it’s safe to say people are still wearing this style!

SaltNPepperSquid · 08/05/2022 19:50

Excuse typos!

and these were women in the salon getting their nails done if I wasn’t clear!

Freetodowhatiwant · 08/05/2022 20:03

Now I just went to buy some of these dresses mentioned! Especially the gorgeous young thing’s black and white gingham maxi and also the lilac maxi one getting her nails done.

MintyCedricRidesAgain · 08/05/2022 20:07

Lilac maxi dress sounds gorgeous...

I have an emerald green and a black one in the same style and a red with white embroidery but am hoping to have shrunk enough to justify buying some new ones by September!

Just back from day out wandering around Kensington Gardens, hyde park and Gloucester Road in central london and can confirm 50% of people had white trainers on and the ones that didn’t had black or grey trainers😁

Where are people getting these gorgeous black and white gingham maxi dresses from? I saw a woman at Waterloo in one the other day and she looked fantastic.

A friend of mine has Ugg sandals and they go with everything she wears.

Personally not a fan especially as its a trend which can age someone fairly quickly, throw in a denim jacket et voila you may as well have put blue eye liner on and had a perm. The Maxi dress itself can be a knife-edge piece of clothing, the right one on the right age and shape can look amazing, that same dress in a bigger size on an older person doesn’t always seem to offer the same forgiving benefits.

That's a bit of a weird generalisation - I see maxi dress, white trainers and a denim jacket on women from late 20s onwards. It's a very practical, small child-friendly outfit while still making a bit of an effort. It suits older women too - I see women my mum's age (70s) in it. It's ubiquitous, not very exciting but seems to suit a wide range of ages and sizes.

Suggesting you may as well put on blue eyeliner and a perm would make you young in the 80s, so 50ish? I really don't think it makes 30-something mums look 50.

Loads of companies do chub rub shorts now! I love the Big Bloomers ones, but have seen them in M&S and Primark if you want high street. They're honestly a game-changer, every woman I know who's over a size 12 wears them.

MintyCedricRidesAgain · 09/05/2022 13:13

@TulipsGarden sadly I'm much nearer 50 than 30, and ikwym about the look not being especially exciting.

My main aim is is to look moderately glam from the waist up so I'm happy to have photos of me and DD in some of the nicer places we're going to, without sacrificing my ability to spend hours walking around London, and I think dress and trainers definitely fits the brief.

In other news I went for an impromptu walk along the beach yesterday...in a dress. Will definitely be getting the shorts 😕

I don't. I'm a 14, occasionally, depending on style/ cut, a 16. I wear dresses and skirts all the time. I didn't know they or chub rub was even a thing.
