White trainers and maxi dresses...

...is this look still a thing? Or will I look like a bit of a dinosaur?

Dd turns 18 in a few months and we have a weekend away planned some of which will involve a lot of walking but still want to look a bit glam from the ankles up!

I'm mid/late 40s and considerably overweight (but working on it!) and having given up work 18 months ago to care for my Olds my wardrobe currently consists of uber smart office wear and heels or jeans, tatty tops and cheap pumps, so any additional fashion tips would be gratefully received!

It won't go anywhere until trainers go out if fashion.

@Neverendingdust oh blimey...I was thinking denim jacket on top as well 😖!

Mind you I lent it to my mum the other day and she looked pretty good in it at 83...

My 76 year old
Mum just bought a denim jacket. It's nicer than mine and she looks nicer than me 🙄🤣

Manicsfan · 07/05/2022 09:35

Wear your favourite outfit and enjoy your trip.
These style rules are pure nonsense. 2 people could wear exactly the same outfit- 1 could look dowdy, the other, extremely stylish.
Women who stand out for me look effortless, have well fitting clothes, wear bright colours, have healthy skin... its how you wear it.

TheOGCCL · 07/05/2022 09:37

100% a thing, I see it everywhere (I'm in London). Of course it's not cutting edge though

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/05/2022 09:38

I just wore bod standard Adidas trainers around London - nice and bouncy. Didn't wear them with a dress though. The thigh rub would have killed me!

ManUforthewin · 07/05/2022 09:41

I’ve been out a couple of times recently and it has definitely still been a look that many people are wearing. I found the younger women tended to wear shorter floral / patterned dresses and chunkier trainers and the ones like me were more in the longer dresses or skirts and then plimsolls or slimmer trainers.

Definitely not trying to be cutting edge...just want to avoid looking like a tit!

@totallyoutnumbered I'm thinking of getting mum one for her birthday tbh. The women in our family are pretty luck with the ageing genetics...she could easily pass for late sixties.

@ManUforthewin that's good to know, I have some shorter floral dresses which I hadn't thought of wearing with trainers.

I'm still wearing maxi/midi dresses with white trainers, and yes, on occasion a denim jacket, shock horror, it works, you'll look lovely, feel comfortable and it'll show in your face.

To shake it up how about about wide leg trousers from M & S, with a skimming white t shirt and denim or leather jacket? Cross body bag.

I'm a massive fan of magic trousers too, navy or stone, rolled up with your white trainers and a white shirt?

Live your choice of trainer, I've got the Fitflop Rally in white leather, they're the most comfortable trainer I've ever owned.

Could you tell me about Magic Trousers please? Where do you get them? A quick Google wasn't that helpful.

actiongirl1978 · 07/05/2022 09:48

@MintyCedricRidesAgain we all still identify as the slinky 19yr old! Sadly I was never that slinky - I was more pin striped suits and Court shoes and drinks at the Pitcher and Piano in my City days.

But I think you'll look ace OP. You sound like an upbeat and positive person. This sort of thing makes you attractive irrespective of the clothes 😊

Jewel1968 · 07/05/2022 09:59

On the rub thigh point I find moisturising the area works. I guess the thighs just glide when they meet. An alternative if you forget the shorts.

Rina66 · 07/05/2022 10:09

@ChurchlightJane you can get magic trousers in lots of places, they're just super stretchy smart casual pull on trousers with a tie waist. I find them so flattering. I get mine from a local company, I like them because they have a back yoke for a nicer fit and are a good weight fabric.

I put a new maxi on last night and added my big chunky DM-alikes as I thought I needed an extra inch of height - then when I looked at myself I felt that it looked much better than the white trainer thing I was doing all last summer. So I think it's time for me to find a different summer shoe. That said, for a city break it's comfort all the way - I'm heading to London in a couple of weeks and will probably take my sketchers because they're so comfy!

SomePeopleAreJustIdiots · 07/05/2022 10:11

late September likely to be raining

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 07/05/2022 10:12

I think its a look that definitely works better with chunkier trainers. Those slim / delicate converse versions don’t look nearly so good.

MintyCedricRidesAgain · 07/05/2022 10:39

@actiongirl1978 Awww...thank you!

I actually dug out a bag of my 19yo clothes last night to see if there was anything DD might fancy.

She's much slimmer than me but a broader frame so they didn't really work for her. I can't believe how tiny I was...I always felt I could do with being a bit slimmer, even when I was a size 10-12 which seems crazy now that I'd be delighted to get down to a size 16!

it’s the only style that I can wear in the summer and not feel dreadful about myself.

@Footgoose - I saw a woman in London yesterday - she must have been size 20, wearing a black and white gingham maxi dress and white trainers. She looked genuinely fabulous, shapely and summery. I almost wanted to tell her. I love a fashion style that looks good on everyone.

BlueBlueCowWondering · 07/05/2022 10:46

I think it's the 'white' part pf the op that's the issue.
I wonder if you'd be happier in a plain dark pair?

MintyCedricRidesAgain · 07/05/2022 10:54

OK...have found a few chunkier options...whaddya think?

I work in London, it's a massive look there for a variety of ages. Londoners want comfy feet.

I’m on the edge of London and would 100% agree.

It’s a lovely look and I think you’ll feel very comfortable in it, both practically and stylishly. I try never to wear sandals in London unless v hot as it’s a bit grubby tbh!

Also I run a fashion boutique aimed ag my own age group (30s/40s) and my customers very much go for that style.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/05/2022 11:30

I don't like any of those new ones you've posted, sorry.

You have inspired me to wear a maxi dress today though!

I’m a fat, old Londoner. I can confirm that the dress + white trainer combo is still the default for lots of women. I’m one of those dinosaurs who doesn’t like to wear trainers outside the gym, so for myself I’d go for colour or a bit of bling. I like the ones you posted above with the rainbow jewels.

I like the shape of the second ones. I can’t see them close up on my phone but I’d go for them out of the 3 you’ve posted.

Bagelsandbrie · 07/05/2022 11:45

Not at all what you’re asking but thought I’d share these.. I’ve just ordered them. Like Dr Martens chunky sandals but cheaper!
