37, style crisis, trainers, what's trendy, what's not?

I'm a 37 yo woman, not hugely fashionable as don't have time to be, I don't dress frumpy generally for my age, I wear skinny jeans a lot, & plain crew and v neck tees/ long sleev tops, people usually think I'm much younger 27/28, im a size 8, feel like I could be making more of myself and i know I'm not not making the most of being more fashionable but I'm crap with it! I Chuck on mostly black skinny jeans in winter with black and white sketcher summits slip on trainers which are comfy and practical! I don't have time to work out what would suit me then the time to match bits together to make an outfit, it takes ages then I get stressed and just go back to trusty skinny's with jeans. Prob fact I'm a mum to a 3yo & I just don't have the time but see many very fashionable woman my age & older! No idea how they do it with family too. Also read somewhere skechers are frumpy 👀 I don't want to rock frumpy but huge thick sole trainers are def too Uber trendy for me, so what brands/types of trainers sit best for my age but fact I look younger for my age? 🤦‍♀️

These are my currents I need to replace... they're so well rated and they aren't to me hugely unfashionable looking either or is that my age telling!!...🤷‍♀️

If I had to describe my style it's sort of regatta outdoor jacket, skinny's and trainers! I think this means I'm not a 'fashionable' type & my style is outdoorsy then...

I dont think I really sit anywhere, I feel like im a gap T-shirt and jeans person, in the summer the same just swop to light wash but with flat sandals or ballet pumps with nice tops and cardigans, i think this is maybe what you call a busy mum style?? 😂🤦‍♀️ I feel like I shouldn't be worrying it's stupid I'm 37, and I felt ok about it but now have become AWARE that perhaps I could do better with myself...my DH has told me to stop being silly and I shouldn't give a monkeys as long as im happy! Love him for this as he just sees it as superficial and just wants me to be happy and I shouldn't worry about it as much as I am as if the crux of it is worry im not fashionable enough in the eyes of others which I think is my issue I shouldn't give time to anyone that prioritises clothes etc over the person you are or choose to be...

Lacoste Lerond.
Air Force 1.
I think black trainers are dated personally- as are Sketchers-sorry.
You need plain white.

Redlorryyellowduck · 07/02/2022 11:30

Stan Smiths

itscomplicatedlife · 07/02/2022 11:30

@KylieCharlene

See lacoste were huge when I was early 20s but I can't imagine wearing them now tbh! And white trainers with kids, soft play centres & parks prob not gonna last longer than a few hours, black def hides a multitude of toddler fails 😂

I'm 35, with a toddler and pregnant & I live in skinny jeans with t shirts or sweatshirts.
I wear Vejas V10s, plain white Vans or my old faithful adidas shell toes

CocoPancakes · 07/02/2022 11:43

I think I have a very similar style to you and same age. You could be describing my wardrobe, aside from the sketchers. If I'm wearing skinny jeans and a basic top I'll normally wear a pair of flatter shoes, like Superga's (I personally think of Lacost as a bit past it too but what do I know). Only problem is if you're on your feet all day I find the flat shoes really uncomfortable. I have a pair of Nike trainers that are very similar to the Sketchers in your pic and if I don't have them on, I tend to stick them in the car so I can change over if I need something a bit more comfortable but less stylish.

itscomplicatedlife · 07/02/2022 12:01

@MsSquiz @CocoPancakes

Difficult one when you get older esp with young kids too as your lifestyle changes. On my feet a lot and knees sometimes too. Just checked out the Lacoste lerond, actually quite Nice and leather so could wash over easily, perhaps with light grey joggers & sweatshirt with a black hooded gilet/gilet coat would look pretty good...ive got the Nike ones too! I tend where those in summer but love them. I'll keep hunting, new balance look ok too. I think it's also situational, atm spend most days on my feet, soft play, in the park but soon I'll be less on my feet so can start to wear some trendier things. Thanks all! 👍

You are me, except I’m a size 18 Grin I live in my Stan smiths. They come up clean really easily with some Elbow Grease spray and an old toothbrush.

itscomplicatedlife · 07/02/2022 12:23

@MonkeyPuddle Exactly! Practicality has just been king for last few yrs! It's only now things have slowed down I've had a day off today to actually THINK about it a bit more 😂 I love the joggers and sweatshirt looks but never really gave it more thought than as far as 'maybe that won't suit me'! When you don't have time it's just quick decisions all the time, but tbh I've just sat and thought about a few trainers others have mentioned with some more fashionable joggers for a change and maybe if I give it a chance I could put that style at least together!! 😂 miss the free time I had pre mum life lol but kids gotta come first. I was beating myself up about it and getting myself down and sort of slightly resenting mum life which is not good!! It's not everything even though it's nice to look & feel better re fashion it's a balance of time also which can be tricky

I have very similar Nikes OP. I generally wear white leather and canvas trainers but have recently got into black. I have recently bought these too. I think I have a similar style to you, similar age too.

I'm 36 and a bit of a trainer fanatic.

At the moment my Onitsuka corsairs are my favourite in navy. I think they are a nice sport casual blend.

I spent the weekend with an 18 year old niece and have been encouraged to get some Air Force 1s although I understand the new thing are "dunks"! I don't have to be pushed hard though to buy new trainers!

I also have some burgundy nike air max which are lovely too!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/02/2022 16:35

I've got white Stans but I'm sick to death of them and feeling as if I'm 'done' with white trainers. Struggling to know what to replace them with though. I don't give a toss about being 'trendy' but the Skechers make my soul die a bit.

cherrypiepie · 09/02/2022 16:52

I have white Nike Air Force ones and black converse high tops and I always reach for the converse high tops!

If you are on Instagram there are lots of fashion gramers to follow.

@Hereforthedramaz I like these very much, do you like Saucony originals too ?

Yes!! I love that 70s retro vibe, like some of the New Balance shapes/ colours too!

Do you have some saucony originals? Are they Uber comfy?

grabitnoe · 09/02/2022 18:24

@Hereforthedramaz yes comfy, I switch between the Saucony originals Jazz and Adidas Gazelles, but I do sometimes find the Gazelles too flat. The Jazz have a bit of shape and I like the various colour combos for a bit of interest.

I'm thinking of getting these next ..just can't decide whether I want the pastels or something brighter.

Those are really nice, for what it's worth I read somewhere that pastels are likely to replace the now slightly overdone white trainer!

I like that they've got a bit of subtle height too

Mamamia35 · 09/02/2022 19:52

@itscomplicatedlife perhaps these black Veja would suit? m.zalando.co.uk/veja-sdu-trainers-blacknatural-vj211a019-q11.html

XingMing · 09/02/2022 19:56

I'm a lot older than you, by about 30 years, and the trainers (I wear them most of the time) that are speaking to me are emerald green. My only words of advice would be to go brave, not safe.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/02/2022 20:20

I saw somebody wearing dark green velvet trainers recently and I want them so much, but can't find them. :(
