How many coats do you have?

I wfh and never have to look dressed up. I have a technical waterproof for (rare) hikes, a long black coat, a proper Scandinavian winter coat, a trench type thing, a mid weight puffer and in the sales I've just convinced myself I needed to get three more ( 2 mid season, one fairly warm). I don't 'need' them, they will add variety to my wardrobe but clearly are not necessary. But I love coats!! I'm sure I'd have more if I hadn't put on weight 3 years ago and had to get rid of most of mine and start again. It's becoming a bit embarrassing to explain to my OH what the newest package is, and I should probably save my money for other things.

Am I going overboard? How many coats do you have?

Around 20. It’s ridiculous, I know, however, most are very unique pieces, and you won’t see anyone wearing the same one. Just bought a stunning one from Sea New York.

Letitsnoooow · 01/01/2022 22:31

I love coats

Black leather Superdry jacket
Red teddy coat
Burgundy Ted Baker smart coat
Padded black coat with hood
Padded cream coat with furry hood
Green short padded coat with furry hood
Blue regatta long raincoat
Oversized black coat
Oversized short duvet coat
Pink short raincoat
Blue blazer
Beige leather jacket (never worn)
Cream leather jacket Karen Millen
Black and white wool coat with belt smart for work
Short cream teddy jacket Great Plains
Black fitted anorak
Black short tailored jacket for work
White faux leather jacket
Grey faux fur coat
Black short faux fur jacket = 20

Got my eye on more but I’m glad I’ve just listed them as I can see I don’t need a single one more.

Hmm...
Hobbes navy blue long cashmere-wool mix which is smart rather than very warm, but will work with a big scarf and gloves and thin wool layers to be warm enough for how I"d wear it.
Jaeger long houndstooth bought in the sale. Claims to be wool but not very warm actually.
ASOS trench. Very handy and was cheap enough that I didn't feel badly about shortening it.
Long Marimekko rain-proof - stylish and quite practical, but not sure how it would perform in an absolute downpour.
Horrible slightly padded black waterproof which has a hood and velcro that always catches my hair line. An emergency buy on a wet Norfolk weekend from one of those tragic cheap shops about a decade ago, and somehow, I still have the ill-fitting, ugly thing.

I think I need something lightweight and waterproof to go over layers and a really warm, possibly padded, coat for really cold days (not that we ever seem to get those in the south east any more). But I don't want to look like I have given up on style while wearing either of them. Patagonia? Any suggestions? Can't afford Montcler!

@Tightwad2020 if you are able to splash some pretty reasonable cash you could check out Scandinavianedition.com - their range is both functional and stylish imo, but not at all cheap

(But def not as much as Montcler!)

Only listing the coats that are bum length or below, as the jackets number about 20 ish (eldest 24 years old!). Faux black persian lamb, faux fur, yellow wool, blue wool, orange boucle, 2 x check tweed, red wool duffle, yellow waterproof, cotton lace dress coat, pink faux sheepskin - oldest is coming up for 15 years old, so not all recent, but classic styling so still very wearable and fit!

Tightwad2020 · 02/01/2022 15:50

Thank you Muesli! These look like what I"m after.

Winter and summer Didriksons, for downpours / dog-walking
Smart cornflower blue swing-y raincoat: bought 1997
4 smart woven wool coats (black, black and tan check, and camel reversible to checked, green loden) variety of lengths and shapes but all hand me downs/inherited
2 black evening/dressy coats -- different shapes and fabrics
Mid-thigh puffer coat in marron for snow or cold town wear
Red Shibumi coat (shared with DS. Our clothes overlap and we swap coats around so they get worn.)
Red waxed jacket
2 gilets -- one sheepskin (bought 1979) one electric blue.
And numerous jackets bought for workwear in the days when I did, spanning the years from 1980-2010, which I keep because they come around again every few years. And I'm the same size, and have space ATM. I shall have to have a huge cull when we move.
