How many coats do you have?

I wfh and never have to look dressed up. I have a technical waterproof for (rare) hikes, a long black coat, a proper Scandinavian winter coat, a trench type thing, a mid weight puffer and in the sales I've just convinced myself I needed to get three more ( 2 mid season, one fairly warm). I don't 'need' them, they will add variety to my wardrobe but clearly are not necessary. But I love coats!! I'm sure I'd have more if I hadn't put on weight 3 years ago and had to get rid of most of mine and start again. It's becoming a bit embarrassing to explain to my OH what the newest package is, and I should probably save my money for other things.

Am I going overboard? How many coats do you have?

@ILoveAllRainbowsx

One summer jacket and one winter jacket both Berghaus.
Don’t you ever go out socially where you want to look a bit dressier?
ILoveAllRainbowsx · 31/12/2021 22:30

@LubaLuca

No I am in my 50s and detest dressing up so I don't now. When I was younger I did but not now. I also wfh so don't need a work coat which used to double up as my smart going out coat.

GrumpyLivesInMyHouseNow · 31/12/2021 22:37

Ohhh good thread

Barbour wax - doesn't fit anymore but won't sell it. It was my horse riding coat

Barbour quilted - lightweight which I've worn to death and it's falling apart at the seams now

Barbour warm winter coat - only really use on very cold weather and it's a bit tight on me these days

Lightweight Joules waterproof which I now wear with a fleece under when it's cold as the above is too tight

Long formal wool coat for work (when I go into the office)

I've also got a joules body warmer

I've now got my eye on a joules 2 in 1 Parker that's in the sale but I've tried to tell myself I've enough clothes, coats and boots

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 31/12/2021 23:55

I love coats! I feel like they really make an outfit, so I always coordinate them with my outfits. I've just counted, and I have 17. Just got another one today actually 😇

ElinorOliphant · 01/01/2022 00:25

You can’t have too many coats in the UK

NearlyAHoarder · 01/01/2022 00:28

About 4 wool ones. 3 skinny puffers, one rain coat. 2 insulated waterproof winter parkas.

NearlyAHoarder · 01/01/2022 00:28

Plus about 3 summer jackets

GrapefruitGin · 01/01/2022 00:29

Around 15-20 coats and jackets

Notwithittoday · 01/01/2022 00:32

I have a super dry parka
A cream puffa style jacket
A black Barbour
A teddy coat
A belted black coat with fur collar
A suede jacket
A denim jacket
2 Mac’s
A trench coat
A velvet jacket
I’ve just ordered a new blue belted coat oops

Divebar2021 · 01/01/2022 00:38

Over 15 coats at least although about half of them were preloved ( eBay, charity shops) or vintage. If you buy good quality and look after them they last a long time.( I don’t include jackets of any description in that)

Dancingonmoonlight · 01/01/2022 00:43

Quite a lot. Coats are my weak spot. I have probably 20 - 25 now after doing a big cull earlier this year although I have a bag of coats in the attic that I wore pre children and I don't have any idea how many are in the bag.

I have about six 'long' coats, ten jackets including four leather jackets, a raincoat, a couple of parka style coats and quite a few wool mid length coats.

MuesliNameChange · 01/01/2022 00:43

Oh my goodness I am so glad I started this thread - I've found my people! Hello fellow coat addicts!! 👋😊

My partner just doesn't have any sort of urge to buy things - he is a natural minimalist- so doesn't get it at all and thinks it's a bit ridiculous to want more than essentials. He has 2 coats, a warm one and a running jacket. My friends spend their money on things like musical instruments (very worthy) so I was feeling v frivolous wanting just lots of lovely coats for all eventualities! Feeling much better about it now thank you everyone and will happily own up to wanting at least 3 more - ideally a long camel wrap wool one, a short quilted biker style jacket, and a waxed parka. I'm sure there will be many others but will try to hold off til next winter to buy them 😬

In the meantime I am deriving enormous joy from reading about all your coats. Turns out vicarious coat love is fabulous too!! Thank you all Smile

From memory :

3 macs full length - one Tesco , one Barbour and one Tommy Hilfiger
1 long puffer fur collar Barbour
1 long sleeveless gilet with hood
1 long raincoat M and S
1 hip length raincoat Joules
1 teddy coat
3 hip length macs Crew and Debenhams
1 wool pea coat M and S
1 black funeral coat Debenhams
2 tweed Chanel type coats - M and S and FF
5 quilted Barbours 😬
1 Didrickson
1 long wool coats

1 long coat mixed fabric so thats 23 I think .

Nat6999 · 01/01/2022 01:54

I have one wool smart coat, one thick parka style coat & a thinner quilted barbour style jacket for warmer days.

Snorkmaidenn · 01/01/2022 02:01

Loads, my daughter comes home with lovely ones from local charity shop regularly.

FrDamo · 01/01/2022 02:01

It's too late to accurately count but I recall a figure from a few years back: give or take some losses and some additions, 75

Happy to hang my head in shame. Naturally there's only 5/6 in active rotation, all the rest are just wardrobe fillers!

ForsythiaInBloom · 01/01/2022 02:14

A lot. It’s the way I change my look easily, I like to be warm and dry and I don’t have a car, so they are well used. I walk everywhere so got to be practical. Currently,

A plain black waterproof, smart Mac
A Didrikson duvet coat in bright colour
Northface padded parka
Sweaty Betty short puffa
Ilse Jacobsen khaki waterproof coat
Fake fur coat like a bear
Leather biker jacket
Jaegar camel belted wool coat.
Another parka.

FabriqueBelgique · 01/01/2022 02:16

I’ve always had one coat and just replaced it when it’s ripped under the arm (every time!).

Now I could buy more but I’ve got nowhere to store them. Our coat rack looks like a monster already!

AnotherMansCause · 01/01/2022 02:17

A heavily padded Didrikson waterproof winter coat, nearly knee length
A lightweight summer raincoat, nearly knee length, single layer lined but not padded - Joules
A heavy padded gilet with a hood - Fat Face
A thin padded gilet, the kind you can pack into a tiny bag - Uniqlo
A thin padded jacket, again the kind you can pack into a tiny bag - can't remember, maybe Fat Face/ an outdoor shop/Uniqlo?
A thigh length leather jacket, second hand but good condition, I've had it several years, it looked like someone had bought it & then just donated it as there was basically zero wear on it when I got it.

AnotherMansCause · 01/01/2022 02:19

Meant to add, we also don't have a car so I also walk everywhere, I cannot cope with getting too cold. Hence two of my summer coats being packable!

TakeMe2Insanity · 01/01/2022 07:58

Our street had drive to collect coats for refugees, to my family’s shock I had 15 to give away!

I now have:
Michael kors thick puffa with hood
Uniqlo folds in bag short puffa no hood - good for car
Joules - waterproof
Joules - fleece waterproof- countryside hikes
Boden - beautiful coat coloured for formal
New look - navy for sober formal

So I still have a lot of coats BUT I know what they are and their uses!

WhereAreWeNow · 01/01/2022 08:09

Too many. I love coats. I'd happily have more but don't have any room for them.

BangingOn · 01/01/2022 10:28

Quite a few, although I had a cull during CoVID and sent at least the same number again to the charity shop.

  • Hush black, fawn and grey colour block cocoon style
  • Karl Lagerfeld cream oversized wool and mohair
  • La Redoute khaki long military
  • New Look black leather biker (bought a cheapie as I wasn’t sure whether I’d wear it, but have worn it constantly so want to upgrade it)
  • Whistles oxblood leather biker
  • Disturbia emerald green fake fur
  • Cos long khaki quilted
  • Old dog walking parka
  • Old but classic black quilted Barbour
  • Alice Temperley black and cream cape
  • various denim jackets
xfgdhfgnhkk007 · 01/01/2022 11:14

1 puffer coat
1 folding puffer jacket (which I never wear)
1 long smart wool coat
1 rainproof parka
1 denim jacket
1 army style jacket/shacket thing

Flingingmelon · 01/01/2022 11:23

I work in the clothing industry so I'm very lucky to get free clothes occasionally.

I stopped counting at fifty. They're in the attic and a selection comes out every season.

DH refers to them as the insulation.
