£400 for “really nice” jumper

PurplePikachu · 13/12/2021 16:43

A generous relative wants to spend about £400 (they’d go up to 500) on a “really nice” jumper for me.

My normal spending limit is around next/fat face/m and s, so I have no idea where to start looking at that price.

I’m middle aged, a bit fat (5 foot 8, size 14-16) and a SAHM. I like cashmere and very simple classic unfussy looks.

Any shop suggestions?

Yes I rtft but if could have anything cashmere then I would love love a travel wrap.
I wear my wraps a lot, take one with me to concerts and church and, of course, travelling. But a cashmere one would be lighter and warmer and more droopy and would never date.
Now I am sad that I can’t have one Xmas Sad

Navy Grey are lovely and very classic.

I have never seen a £400 jumper but want to now. Not that I'll ever have a chance to wear one as that's more than our food bill for the month How wonderful for you OP that is a proper treat. Hope you find something you love.
BTW I'm 5'7" and a size 14 to 16 and definitely a bit fat!

Sooverthemill · 14/12/2021 10:53

Navy grey, and daughter, max mara,
But only get something you love. For £400 you need to!

JustLikea · 14/12/2021 10:59

@PurplePikachu Do please show us what you end up purchasing. I personally would love a jumper from Eribe or similar from any Scottish seller.

IvorCutler · 14/12/2021 11:01

Not my taste personally, but what about Bella Freud? Or Alexa Chung? Or something from the outnet? It is an unnecessary figure to spend on a jumper! There is absolutely lovely stuff for less than half of that.

For top quality ethical cashmere, paying money is necessary. My much-mourned Bompard was like wearing a cloud. I would save up to replace it but they don't have the range online that you find in France in store and I want something the same beautiful colour as my last one.

Doubleraspberry · 14/12/2021 11:04

And very few of my clothes are expensive. Currently wearing Fat Face and Dotty P.

Doubleraspberry · 14/12/2021 11:04

And the Fat Face is older than my daughter, who is ten!

I have a cardigan from eribe and it's beautiful
slipperyeel · 14/12/2021 14:18

It would be Max Mara for me

MistySkiesAfterRain · 14/12/2021 15:38

I'm quite enjoying this thread for lusting after out of reach cashmere!

Beyond shoes and coats I think a jumper IS one of those items you can save up for in the knowledge that you will still wear it ten years later.

I'm interested in the style OP goes for, would you want roll neck? Something you can smarten with a shirt underneath? Plain? Cable knit? Practical or wow colour?

LunaTheCat · 14/12/2021 17:33

Bugger the lot of you - have just found Eribe ❤️❤️

DH has been bugging me to add stuff to my Christmas list ...looks like that's sorted now Xmas Grin

nordica · 14/12/2021 17:57

I would always prefer two £200 over one really expensive one... More versatile and less stressful if something happens to it. You can get some really lovely British wool jumpers or cardigans around the £160-200 mark, so that's what I would do, if it didn't seem too cheeky to tell the gift buyer that.

mugoftea456 · 14/12/2021 18:04

@WonderfulYou

I don't know where I'd go to get a jumper under £30.

😂😂😂
Sorry I forgot this was mumsnet.

How the other half live 😂 spending £500 on a jumper is alien to me
ratussbaguss · 14/12/2021 18:18

Ooh definitely looking up some of these

PurplePikachu · 14/12/2021 18:27

Thanks all! I am working my way through all the recommendations.

And yeah tbh there are other things I’d choose to spend that much money on, but generous relative is adamant this is what they want to buy me!

If it really isn't what you'd want for that amount of money, I do think it's a bit silly going ahead with it. If generous relative really wants to make you happy, they'll accept you might prefer not to 'waste/use up' so much money on one jumper, surely?

This winter I have lived in a cashmere jumper that I got for £65 in their outlet. New I think it was £380!! Honestly, it's the most wonderful thing I own and if I had £380 to spend on a jumper it would have been worth every penny.
