£400 for “really nice” jumper

PurplePikachu · 13/12/2021 16:43

A generous relative wants to spend about £400 (they’d go up to 500) on a “really nice” jumper for me.

My normal spending limit is around next/fat face/m and s, so I have no idea where to start looking at that price.

I’m middle aged, a bit fat (5 foot 8, size 14-16) and a SAHM. I like cashmere and very simple classic unfussy looks.

Any shop suggestions?

The OP didn't say Next and Fatface are more her style, but her 'normal spending limit'.

Lucky you! I’d go &Daughter

Have a look at Navy Grey https://navygrey.co/collections/shop

I'm lusting after several of their jumpers

Floisme · 13/12/2021 18:25

Sorry but I disagree - if this is a gift, I think it's for the person doing the giving to choose how to spend it. I'd think differently if they were giving the op cash to buy herself whatever she wants, but it doesn't sound like that's the case.

I'd go for Margaret Howell or some old school Scottish cashmere although I don't know enough about it to recommend a brand.

Floisme · 13/12/2021 18:26

Soz cross post - I meant I disagree that the op should buy herself something else.

Cashmere and cotton are nice. You could get a jumper and the scarf to match

ScribblingPixie · 13/12/2021 18:32

I like John Smedley merino wool & cashmere blend - they have UK factories and make/have made for various designers as well as their own brand. Eg, I bought a cardigan from their factory shop that was a second from a batch for Vivienne Westwood. I think there's a Margaret Howell connection too somewhere. Beautiful colours. johnsmedley.com/uk.

How about looking for a jumper that you really like rather than looking for an expensive one because they want to spend up £500?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 13/12/2021 18:38

£400 Shock. But what if it gets a moth in it?!

IntermittentParps · 13/12/2021 18:39

The OP doesn't say she's against an expensive one; she says that she likes cashmere but
isn't familiar with jumpers in that price range and would like some guidance.

It’s the best!!!

jaundicedoutlook · 13/12/2021 18:49

To add to the list, I love the jumpers from Hawico. Similar to Brora, but (IMO) I think they are made a bit better.

Doubleraspberry · 13/12/2021 18:49

Eric Bompard for sure. I still mourn my lovely one, ruined by fucking moths.

I’ve had some really nice Isabel Marant ones

WittyUser · 13/12/2021 18:57

I'd love one of these iconic ones:

No way would I spend more than £30 on a jumper!

Ask them if you can have the money/vouchers and buy a few things. You could get a brand new wardrobe for that!

Bunnycat101 · 13/12/2021 19:02

I’ve been put off cashmere after some lovely jumpers became very holey- not sure if the moths got them or if they just disintegrated. I was so gutted as I loved them. If she wants to get clothes I’d be tempted by a coat or boots at that price point instead of a jumper to get something that’s likely to last.

It'll have been moths; they have excellent taste and LOVE cashmere and nice wool etc.

That's a bit ungracious. If someone wants to get you something in particular I think you should accept it.
