Rocka and Deftly - you're right about Princess Aiko. That's a very pretty tiara, but her outfit in the second is just a bit ordinary, but maybe that's just more current style. I have noticed that loose double breasted jackets seem to be back in.

@Maireas it was Anne's outfit for C&D's wedding!

Aha! Well done, Deftly. Didn't she wear it again recently?

OP posts:
KillingMeDeftly · 05/12/2021 11:11

Yes, she did. Forget "thrifty Kate", Anne's been rewearing for much longer!

paradyning · 05/12/2021 11:15

I'm afraid that's standard conservative court dressing for Aiko. There were one interesting pap pics of Mako in NYC recently looking far more normal and trendy.

It refreshing to see her looking normal rather than Stepford.
Would love to know the social history of the evolution of the Japanese court dress.

40 years wear is not bad going. Sadly I could not squeeze my abdomen into anything I wore in 1981 Blush

Same @Maireas - constant goodies in the staff room don't help!Blush

KillingMeDeftly · 05/12/2021 11:33

@paradyning I don't think it has evolved! The long skirts and jackets the women wear at formal occasions wouldn't have been out of place in the early 1900s.

Love how the Fail shoehorns "Hell's Kitchen" into the headline to make it sound like she's living in a rough area Grin

KillingMeDeftly · 05/12/2021 11:35

I wonder if Princess Anne buys off the rack or gets everything made to order? If the latter then it's easy to work in generous seams I guess, so that the garments can be subtly altered in years to come.

Serenster · 05/12/2021 11:50

Some of Anne’s clothes must be bespoke, which would definitely help them last. There’s a lovely cream coat with navy inserts in the shoulders that she has been wearing for 40 years, but it’s such a classic collarless style that it really doesn’t look like it comes from any particular era.

The yellow dress she wore for Charles and Diana’s wedding was altered when she wore it again (to another wedding, one of her Gloucester second cousins) - the neckline had been opened up. She wore the same hat though, which came across as even more dated to me!

I hear you, @Eaumyword - I had three mince pies while doing canteen duty on Friday...

@latedecember1963

I would love to see Diana's wedding dress in real life, MotherofPearl. That's some tiara, Tinitiny! If you scroll a bit further on from that article there's an interesting piece about how Cartier took inspiration from Islamic art and an exhibition about it.
I saw that. I do like that necklace of Wallis’s, I have to say 😍
frugalkitty · 05/12/2021 14:21

Not my photo but a friend visited and shared this. I never knew there was a lace panel down the back of the bodice until seeing this, I've only ever seen pictures with the veil in which would cover it up.

Oh to visit Kensington Palace / London.
Sadly with Covid I'm not travelling anywhere for a wee while.
Thank you for all the photos and articles.

Not sure if I can add photos but I’ll try…

Thanks for the photos, Bears.
It looks quite yellow, has the fabric yellowed with time?

OP posts:
KillingMeDeftly · 05/12/2021 15:29

It may be the lighting? I guess it has to be low light in order to preserve it. I didn't know about the lace back either. I wonder if Diana had a different dress for the wedding reception? Imagine her and Charles trying to do their first dance with that meringue!

Bearsbearsbears40 · 05/12/2021 15:32

That’s probably just the lighting and my camera, I didn’t particularly think it looked yellowed, it was actually a really lovely shade of cream/ivory.

Maireas · 05/12/2021 15:37

They didn't have an evening reception.( I think that's a recent thing.) They had the wedding breakfast at Buckingham Palace, then they got changed to go on honeymoon. All the royals came out to wave them off in the carriage.
In the evening the royals had champagne and scrambled eggs and watched the highlights on tv.
Charles and Diana were already on Britannia.

OP posts:
SenecaFallsRedux · 05/12/2021 15:58

Charles and Diana spent the first part of their honeymoon at Broadlands (as did Charles's parents), then they went for a cruise on Britannia.

It has stuck in my mind because I always thought it was a bit weird that they went to Earl Mountbatten's country house, considering that he had tried to promote a marriage between Charles and his granddaughter.

Maireas · 05/12/2021 16:17

I stand corrected, Seneca, they did start at Broadlands, as did HM and Philip. It is a strange thing.
I always thought the Britannia cruise a bit odd as well - just those two and a large crew!

C&D's honeymoon sounds incredibly dull - didn't they also spend some of it at Balmoral? I'm sure there are photos of them there. Interesting that they didn't hide where they were honeymooning. I don't think William or Harry's honeymoon destinations were ever revealed were they? Meghan had tan lines at the Trooping a few weeks later so assume it was somewhere sunny!

Maireas · 05/12/2021 16:52

Yes, they finished the honeymoon at Balmoral. The pictures were quite romantic, but somewhat intrusive by today's standards.

There were pap shots of W&K on honeymoon. It was a tropical island. Can't think where now
Maireas · 05/12/2021 16:59

I remember that, Paradyning - the UK papers chose not to print.
I don't think currently any royals would have a photo shoot on honeymoon! They both look very relaxed and happy in that picture. She may already have been pregnant with William.
