Is this chavvy?
I get why you'd think it but I think its more of a subtle modern version that the old block letter gold MUM necklaces.

He just told me to take it off because he doesn't like it. He was being petty because he brought a weird hat (that made him look like he was wearing a stiff condom on his head) last week and I politely and subtly asked him to wear the woolly hat and said it's more weather appropriate but really it wasn't because of that its just made him look so silly, its more suited for the hipster look. OH style is generally just well he doesnt care and will wear anything, doesnt care what it looks like together. I asked him to not wear this hat that he got last week.

My necklace is hidden and under my top, it's not being viewed by everyone.

Dh used to have a blue striped Ben sherman type shirt that was inoffensive enough but on the back had a load of random words printed. He loved it though so I never said owt.
I was relieved when it became too tight Grin

Why isn't it ok for partners to stop each other wearing things that make them look silly?! Personally, I'd much rather know if I looked like a frump/chav/twat. For example, i used to wear this pair of cropped trousers all the time, they were comfy and practical, but my husband hated them. Now when I see photos of myself in them I can see that they're so unflattering! Wish I'd listened to him. Equally, he has a flat cap that makes him look like a complete dick (I've told him more tactfully), I knew he bought it because a friend of his had one and he somehow looked cool. My husband did not. He doesn't wear it any more.

It's different if they're just trying to be controlling, and I'd hate it if it was frequent. But to call out something that looks bad on you is also what friends do.

Dancingonmoonlight · 13/11/2021 17:18

Mama and Papa sound deliberately ridiculous. 🤣
Really though you are independent adults and wear whatever you like. It isn’t your place to ask your DH to wear a different hat and it isn’t his to ask you to remove a mum label necklace.

OkayTrinny · 13/11/2021 17:20

Similar to this.
It doesn't look that bad on the pic but seriously he looks like a right twat

If you like it, you should wear it.

Similarly, if he likes something, he should wear it.

Stop telling him what to wear and maybe he'll return the favour.

Almostmenopausal · 13/11/2021 17:22

Yeah sorry OP :(

Bookworm65 · 13/11/2021 17:26

Who gets to decide what is or isn't chavvy? If you like it, wear it. It doesn't matter what other people think.

SofiaMichelle · 13/11/2021 17:27

Yeah, it's chavtastic OP.

BigHuff · 13/11/2021 17:30

I immediately thought of one of those tiny fisherman beanies (docker beanie?), but I see this is a canvas(?) version. Does it look like the one in the picture, OP? I wonder if the type of hat has a name?

Tillsforthrills · 13/11/2021 17:31

Are name necklaces ‘chavvy’ too?

Got given one by a work colleague years ago and you can tell even though it’s sterling silver it was cheap.

The OP’s ‘mama’ one isn’t too bad though, delicate.

Tilltheend99 · 13/11/2021 17:35

YA both BU for telling each other what not to wear.

Yes it looks chavy but what’s wrong with that at the end of the day. If it makes you happy to wear it just do it.

PissyMum · 13/11/2021 17:38

If you like it then get it. Personally I think it looks very Elizabeth Duke but I’m sure there are lots of people who think I have shit taste. Have a bit more confidence in your convictions

Condoms have obviously changed since my misspent youth.
Carboncheque · 13/11/2021 17:44

It’s more of a Dutch Cap.

lnsufficientFuns · 13/11/2021 17:46

Ok here for the condom hat 😂

lazylinguist · 13/11/2021 17:47

Why isn't it ok for partners to stop each other wearing things that make them look silly?!

Because what looks silly is a matter of opinion and taste. If the person themselves thought it looked silly, they wouldn't be wearing it. My dh might think something I wore looked silly. Doesn't mean he'd be right!

Geordieoldgirl · 13/11/2021 17:49

I think the necklace is nice. But more importantly, you like it so don’t be put off wearing it by anyone else. And I don’t think it is controlling to try to gently hint to your OH that something is unflattering on them.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 13/11/2021 17:49

So it's OK for you to tell him what he is and isn't supposed to wear (however 'subtly') but not for him to do the same to you?

WrongWayApricot · 13/11/2021 17:54

You're as bad as each other. Hat's nice, necklace is nice. Now be nice to each other.

PinkMochi · 13/11/2021 17:55

Bit weird you bought a mama necklace for yourself. I think necklaces with names/words are chavvy. However, if you want to wear your chav necklace and your oh can wear his condom hatGrin

Yes - and also if it really looks silly other people will comment and they'll take it off. Saying 'hey babe that looks silly' is ok. Saying 'it looks silly, take it off' is not. I've worn plenty of things my DP think look silly but have received compliments from everyone else on.

Very good.

Thank you for the entertainment this evening 😂 this thread was such a funny read!

CouncilHousedAndViolentBaby · 13/11/2021 23:39

Both of yous should wear whatever you like

RobertaFirmino · 14/11/2021 01:25

@Constellationstation

I’d say it’s cheugy rather than chavvy. I don’t mind the name necklaces so much, but it’s the fact that it says mama is cheugy
I've never heard that word before but having looked it up, it sounds similar to 'hun'. That necklace is a bit hun. I've got no right to tell anyone what to wear though, it's what the wearer thinks that counts.

However, you can get something similar in Argos for £6. These necklaces might be 'on trend' now but they will soon become the gold 'MUM'.
