Perfumes/Scents you remember

I was thinking about these and how many I have used over the years. These are the ones I remember, starting from about age 11:-

Blue Grass - Elizabeth Arden
Apple Blossom - Helena Rubinstein
Aqua Manda - Yardley
Vent Vert - Balmain
Shalimar - Guerlain
Caleche - Hermes
Opium - YSL
Aromatics Elixir - Clinique
Escada - Margaretha Ley
No. 5 - Chanel
No. 19 - Chanel
Various perfume sticks from Sephora
and now Paris-Biarritz - Chanel

My favourites were Vent Vert and Escada - sadly both unavailable now - unless anyone knows better?

What were/are your favourite scents?

Poison, the red one. I think it smelt like playdough

AQuickLookInJenners · 07/06/2021 19:58

I loved the Smitty advert. Was just too young for perfume at that point!

barbedwired · 07/06/2021 20:06

@PeterPomegranate I love Sun, I always wear it in the summer, takes me back to Majorca in the early 90s

I have an obsession with Balenciaga Floratopia at the moment.

I loved Avon perfume pins as a child and Pretty Peach, my mum was an Avon lady.

I once had a fabulous Bulgari scent that smelt like leather, have no idea what it was called now

Amdone123 · 07/06/2021 20:26

@Mrs08, oh I did not know that ! I'll have a look, would love to smell it again.

socalledfriend · 07/06/2021 20:31

As soon as I saw your thread I thought of Blue Grass - Elizabeth Arden which was first on your list!! I treated myself to a bottle a few weeks ago. It's a good no nonsense perfume, ideal for the office. I really love the way it smells on me.

Body Shop Dewberry (obviously)

The two that really piss me off the most are

  1. Eau de Givenchy. You can't get it any more, or if you find it somewhere it's so bloody old it smells like tap water when you open it. I used to bloody love that stuff Sad
  1. The original EL Spellbound. They reformulated it a few years ago and it's nothing like the magical scent it used to be.

Youth Dew reminds me of my lovely auntie.

Balenciaga Quadrille was what my mum wore.

I remember buying Miss Balmain which was lovely & Balmain Jolie Madame.
So many beautiful perfumes now gone.

LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell · 07/06/2021 20:38

The original Carolina Herrera perfume was lovely, early 90s?

Also Deci Dela in the late 90s.

Smells from my teen years include a perfume from Next (when they used to have just one for sale, I had a small silver square atomiser which you could buy refills for) and a perfume from Miss Selfridge which just smelt of early 90s little black dresses and red lipstick!! Ahhh the memories

rookiemere · 07/06/2021 20:44

Tobacco Flower from Body Shop - I just googled it and says it was launched in 2000, but I remember it being around in my teens in the 80s. I can't remember much about the smell except it wasn't floral or musky.

Am nursing a bottle of Dolce and Gabbana Sicily- intense gorgeous perfume. They have started remaking it but its £150 a bottle Shock. Someone on a thread like this a few months ago said they were trying a dupe, I must dig up the thread and asked them how they got on with it.

helpmechoosewheretolive · 07/06/2021 20:47

Does it? I’ve never found it but not sure what it’d smell like now as it’s been out of production for so long. It was bloody fabulous!

icelollycraving · 07/06/2021 22:17

Bloody hell, I loved it but that’s a lot for a fragrance Shock

One I had when I was 20 called Anoushka. Not created anymore.

Would also like another smell of Dewberry (Body shop) which I wore all the time when I was 15

QioiioiioQ · 07/06/2021 23:40

@VioletCharlotte

There was one called Sunflowers I used to buy from Boots when I was a teenager that I really loved.
My favourite🌻

@MrsRussell

Je Reviens, Worth.

I buy this every year for my mum: I remember as a very little girl sniffing the inside of her handbag and it's a scent I always associate with mum with her glamorous pencil skirts and very high heels.

Spiritual Sky strawberry oil was my student scent :-)

Started wearing Caron's Narcisse Noir and Tabac Blond about 15 years ago but they're very much "evening" fragrances. Today I'm actually wearing a rather nice Avon scent (Eve Duet, which I adore: floral and frivolous)

OMG Je Reviens reminds me of my mum too.

She also wore Soir de Paris in a very glamorous dark blue glass bottle, anyone remember this?

QioiioiioQ · 07/06/2021 23:46

White musk
patchouli oil
blue stratus
eau jeune
(Sp?)

Ikeameatballs · 08/06/2021 07:34

I used to love Ralph Lauren Glamorous. I got loads of compliments wearing it.

Wasn't the tagline 'Smitty did it!'?

I googled that and yes. Tbh my memories were vague!

SapphireSeptember · 08/06/2021 10:53

Impulse O2, I loved that!
Tesco used to do two body sprays, the first was in a pink can and something like Cherry Kiss/es, the second was in a blue can and I think it was just Blue. I loved that one, it was fresh with a bit of fruitiness, and suited my 15 year old self.

Knittingnanny · 08/06/2021 11:32

@bendmeoverbackwards, Worth! That has reminded me that when I was about 17/18 I briefly had a rich and bit older but very boring boyfriend and he bought me a tiny expensive bottle of worth pure perfume. It was about 3 cm tall and to my shame I lost it from my messy teenage bedroom after a couple of dabs! I never told him

Knittingnanny · 08/06/2021 11:34

Just looked on eBay it’s actually only £21 so I don’t feel guilty!
