Perfumes/Scents you remember

I was thinking about these and how many I have used over the years. These are the ones I remember, starting from about age 11:-

Blue Grass - Elizabeth Arden
Apple Blossom - Helena Rubinstein
Aqua Manda - Yardley
Vent Vert - Balmain
Shalimar - Guerlain
Caleche - Hermes
Opium - YSL
Aromatics Elixir - Clinique
Escada - Margaretha Ley
No. 5 - Chanel
No. 19 - Chanel
Various perfume sticks from Sephora
and now Paris-Biarritz - Chanel

My favourites were Vent Vert and Escada - sadly both unavailable now - unless anyone knows better?

What were/are your favourite scents?

Ispahan by Yves Rocher

There's only 3 that really stand out in my memory:

Avon Pretty Peach, given to me as a birthday present when I was about 6 and I felt so grown up with it
Clinique Happy, DM's perfume of choice for some years
Valentino Rock n Rose, 21st birthday present, sadly discontinued

MrsRussell · 07/06/2021 12:45

Je Reviens, Worth.

I buy this every year for my mum: I remember as a very little girl sniffing the inside of her handbag and it's a scent I always associate with mum with her glamorous pencil skirts and very high heels.

Spiritual Sky strawberry oil was my student scent :-)

Started wearing Caron's Narcisse Noir and Tabac Blond about 15 years ago but they're very much "evening" fragrances. Today I'm actually wearing a rather nice Avon scent (Eve Duet, which I adore: floral and frivolous)

missjoanie · 07/06/2021 12:49

@Amortentia - it wasn’t Cabotine de Gres was it?

MrsDoctorDear · 07/06/2021 12:51

Fidji - first grown up perfume bought by DM for my birthday.

Paloma Picasso
D&G Red
O de lancome
Pleasures Estée Lauder

There was a Mont Blanc one which I loved, can't remember the name.
Probably lots more that will come to me.

MrsDoctorDear · 07/06/2021 12:53

In fact it wasn't O de lancome, the lid was black.

MrsDoctorDear · 07/06/2021 12:56

O' Intense!!

As a child I remember having a solid perfume inside a plastic daisy like flower - it was probably Avon.

I liked the Body Shop oils - peach and later Ananya.

I also had a Benetton perfume in a hexagonal (?) bottle. And a Crabtree & Evelyn perfume that smelled like Carnation - it was amazing and I’d love to find that again.

My sister and both wore Anais Anais and I had LouLou and she wore Eden. My dad bought me Yvresse from an airport and I hated it (I wish now I’d given it more of a chance as it was a gift).

Later I wore Allure and Paris and J’Adore.

In Germany in the late 90s I discovered Jil Sander Sun. I bought some a couple of years ago and the smell takes me straight back but I don’t really like it now.

A friend at university wore Coco and I loved it on her but it smelled awful on me. I also loved Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir on other people but it’s so distinctive I didn’t think I could wear it too.

I am enjoying perfume more and more as I get older (mid 40s) but it’s an expensive habit.

MrsRussell · 07/06/2021 13:18

@PeterPomegranate I know! I just looked at Narcisse Noir online out of intrest and it was a case of HOW MUCH???!!!!!
£120 was the last listed price, and it's now unavailable. Whaaaaaatttt!!!!

Think I'm going to be sticking to my Avon scent for now....

shallIswim · 07/06/2021 13:20

Anais Anais.
I had a bottle of the Originale formulation for Christmas and it's very close. Close enough that I'm very happy to wearing it again aged 55 - 40 years after I first wore it!

Bluesheep8 · 07/06/2021 13:55

Oh I remember that Benetton one! I'd forgotten all about that Smile

Wishingwell75 · 07/06/2021 14:29

I always ask on these wonderful perfume threads and I am going to ask today - does anyone remember a perfume Miss Selfridge sold in the early 90's - it didn't have a name just Roman numerals. Of course I can't remember the number. Honestly, I some times wonder if I dreamt it😁
Other delights from my youth include white musk from the body shop, exclamation, loulou and all the Impulse flavours - not at the same time though! The Benetton one a pp already mentioned and the Moschino one that is now discontinued - clear glass bottle, gold cap, with a sort of pearl and a ribbon round the neck of the bottle in the Italian flag colours🇮🇹 - if anyone knows the name?
I also wore Poison when I was 15 or 16 which seems funny now and I totally agree with the pp who mentioned the tendre poison version - it was gorgeous.
Then all the oceanic scents of the 90's but I have always worn and come back to the original Coco, love it.
These days I appreciate an oud but the price of getting something niche or actually most perfumes are so expensive!

Gloria by Cacharel.
Exclamation by Coty.
Hot, and Cold by Benetton.
Very Valentino by Valentino.
Glamorous by Ralph Lauren.

Mrs08 · 07/06/2021 15:12

minty I remember that one well! :) loved it.
I had a lovely perfume from miss selfridge called "soft talk" (?)
I bought it to wear to my cousins wedding in 1993...
No one else seems to remember it!
Like many my First perfumes were avon - moonwind, topaze, charisma, timeless...
I got a bottle of CK obsession for my 18th birthday
Wore avon nightmusk for years from my early 20s until it was discontinued then
KL sun moon stars, Stella...
I now wear lots of niche/indy stuff from places like 4160 Tuesdays, andy tauer, maison margeila etc
I've also still got lots of avon perfumes - my current favourites are the little black dress flankers.
I also have 2 of the molecule perfumes (01 and 02)

Mrs08 · 07/06/2021 15:13

Oh and a couple of the next perfumes are great

AQuickLookInJenners · 07/06/2021 15:19

Anaïs Anaïs, Body Shop White Musk, Miss Dior, Poison, Paris, Coco.

NotSure94 · 07/06/2021 15:42

Talking of random cheap but lovely ones has reminded me. I got a two pack M&S Deodorant gift set when I was a teenager in the 80s/early 90s and one was black and spicy and one was white and musky. They were SO DELICIOUS! The black one smelt a bit like coca cola weirdly! I was gutted when it ran out!

Emmelina · 07/06/2021 15:45

Lots of posh ones here, I clearly didn’t get as much pocket money;)
Ananya and Dewberry from body shop were fab.

AQuickLookInJenners · 07/06/2021 16:00

My list spanned a couple of decades!

AQuickLookInJenners · 07/06/2021 16:01

I missed off Roma from the Body Shop which I think was like Paris.

1moreglassplease · 07/06/2021 16:10

I used to love KL by Karl Lagerfeld. I had the perfume, dusting powder and body lotion so you could probably smell me 10mins before I entered a room. It's the one scent I would love to be brought back. It was my scent throughout late teens/twenties so brings back happy memories for me.

I've worn and liked Amarige and J'Adore but now wear Quercus by Penhaligon's or Rive Gauche by YSL.

HetHetHet · 07/06/2021 16:16

Cabotine de Grès is very similar. The "This perfume reminds me of" section in every Fragrantica entry is wonderful for finding dupes. (It still hasn't found a convincing replacement for MAC MV3 though, my eternal grumble!)

Sorry, that was about Poison Tendre - the quote disappeared for some reason.
Spied · 07/06/2021 16:23

Valentino vendetta. I had the body lotion. Loved it.
Beverly Hills 90210 as a young teen.
Ocean Dream Giorgio BH.

LadyEloise · 07/06/2021 16:25

I'd love Coty to bring back Wild Musk.
I love love love it.
