Thank you @OverTheRubicon. I have not bought from shein, and now I never will.

@wishywashywoowoo70

I've bought quite a lot for DD9 and been surprised how nice it is. Had a couple of tops and sweaters for myself and they've been great. Better than Primark for sure. Obviously some of the stuff is random AF but be careful what you order and you'll be fine.
“Be careful what you order and it’ll be fine.” You could say that to the factories who are ordering job lots of slaves to sew clothes for Shein. Many advantages to using Xingjiang slaves after all. Will work for the length of the contract!

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping I know, it's mind blowing isn't it! How anyone could read those links and respond with anything other than "wow I had no idea, I'll never buy from there again" is beyond me. But instead people are actually saying "well it's everyone's personal choice if they want to support slavery, let's stop judging and let adults make their own decisions" or "well life isn't fair so what's the point in trying to improve things" or "I can't afford to buy new from ethical sources and between the choice of buying second hand or buying new and cheap but made by slaves I'll choose to support slavery". And the person who called posters "entitled" for judging people who support slavery and suggesting that boycotting slavery is a privaledged thing to do - can these people not hear themselves?! How anyone can have so little humanity or basic compassion for other humans is beyond me. If you prefer to support slavery, child labour, and sexual exploitation over spending 10 minutes researching the brand you want to buy from or buying second hand, then yes in going to judge you and the sooner society as a whole also starts judging you the better things will be.

I didn’t know any of that, won’t buy from them again 😱

I also find it slightly ludicrous that people think a nice little campaign is going to change the Chinese government's approach to human rights.

I don't think anyone's suggesting a campaign or that we think our own choices will sway the Chinese government. Just to say that after buying once from Chicwish in the past, I learned about their operating method, and I don't want to wear clothes made by slaves, and I want to support companies that are making an effort to find and maintain ethical supply chains.
rarat · 25/04/2021 15:08

Unfortunately the world really isnt a very fair place to live.

It isn't but why perpetuate that & "other" other nationalities because a few more cheap items of clothing is more important in your life?

mynameiscalypso · 25/04/2021 15:47

@OverTheRubicon Oh, my comment wasn't aimed at you! It was aimed at those people who seem to think that something other than boycotting companies that use slave labour will make a difference.

Yay! Let us know if the slave-made clothes are to your liking!

Of course boycotts work. It won’t change the approach or beliefs of the Chinese government, but it will change the economic incentives. If they can’t sell products made by slaves, they don’t have the same incentive to enslave people.

The link somebody posted above about the sugar boycott is a great read.

Boycotts work. Definitely. It's what I'm advocating (just in case my post wasn't clear). I was just struck by a PP who said we shouldn't boycott but maybe just have a nice little campaign instead (presumably so people could feel better about themselves while still supporting slave labour) like that would actually make a difference when it's all about £££
IrmaFayLear · 25/04/2021 19:41

I wouldn’t buy Chinese stuff now. Giving that country 1p makes me feel ill.

DialsMavis · 25/04/2021 20:10

I won't be ordering ever again, also showed the links to my MIL who is a bit of a Wish addict and she is won't order anything else
