Been googling long jumpers and I love this, but never heard of this brand before - is is genuine or a scammy site? Shein Colour block Jumper

My dd wanted to order something from Shein so this thread is so timely.

OverTheRubicon · 24/04/2021 23:05

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit this ranking is pretty good. British made is not necessarily good either unfortunately, as per the horrific treatment of garment workers in Leicester by Boohoo and others.

H&M are probably the best of the affordable end, but best overall (and I certainly don't achieve this all the time) is to buy second hand, there is so much fabric going to rubbish and landfill every day. Even doing it sometimes makes a huge difference!

Thank you @OverTheRubicon and others. Will not buy from Shein again.

RhusTox · 24/04/2021 23:32

Thank you to all who have flagged up the slavery. It's appealing what China is doing to Muslims full stop, let alone with us parading about with the toils of their labour on our backs.

I'll never buy from them again.
No matter how skint (and I've spent time reliant on the food I can find in skips) none of us need new clothes so badly that we can only buy the ones produced by slaves.

As has been pointed out, H&M are the cheapest manufacturer with decent standards.

CorianderBee · 24/04/2021 23:36

I won't order because I refuse to support sweatshops.

RoseMartha · 25/04/2021 00:06

A couple of times for the dc.
Stuff is ok. And worn fairly well, leggings particular lasted ok

DialsMavis · 25/04/2021 00:09

Where can we buy from that is not made using slavery or sweatshops? Excluding People Tree etc. Don't all high st shops in the UK buy from appalling suppliers? I try and buy 2nd hand where possible but aalso from high st, supermarkets and v occasionally Shein

Nat6999 · 25/04/2021 00:19

HercWasanEnemyofEducation Don't you ever think that clothes from places like Next, ASOS & Boohoo are probably made in the same environments? If everyone stops buying from them then the people who work in the factories will lose their jobs & won't be able to feed & house themselves. Be better campaigning for the companies who use them to pay better wages & improve working conditions, but then prices of clothes will go through the roof.

IWishIWasABaller · 25/04/2021 00:26

I've bought loads from the plus size section and have been pleasantly surprised by the quality . There is a fab boho range called emery rose and I've picked up some lovely embroidered tops from that range. The review section can be very helpful too.

I like Emery Rose 💕

Primark quality but fine.

Not necessarily. Yes, a lot aren't great (I love Zara, but they're pretty poor), but most European and US companies have to make at least some efforts to find responsible suppliers and minimise environmental damage.

As above, the.goodonyou.eco/how-we-rate/ link has some information. Some, like H&M, make an effort, but shops won't if people just assume that they're all the same and in some cases apparently don't give a damn if a slave made their pants.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 25/04/2021 08:28

@Nat6999 Did you read the article? Slavery of the Ughur Muslims in China isn't paying an unfair wage, its slavery. People forced to work for nothing. You aren't helping by buying those clothes.
I'm Shock you're trying to argue that you are helping.

HeadNorth · 25/04/2021 08:43

goodonyou.eco/how-we-rate/ The link again for anyone who missed it. This is really useful if you want to make a difference - and consumers choosing to avoid companies that manufacture unethically will put pressure on them to change. We are so lucky to have a national minimum wage, access to healthcare, the worst poverty here cannot begin to compare to slaves picking cotton, which is happening now, in the 21st century, so we can buy cheap clothes.

Dontsayfuckorbugger · 25/04/2021 08:45

Yes lots of stuff. Majority is great. You can return stuff easily and get a full refund. My daughter's use it too. Never any problems

CommanderBurnham · 25/04/2021 08:47

I'm not sure that jumper would be £16.99 in primark. £10-12 I reckon.

HeadNorth · 25/04/2021 08:52

@Dontsayfuckorbugger read the thread - Shein is believed to use sweatshops that have unsafe working conditions and use child labour. Do you really want to wear clothes where the cotton was picked by an 8year old child who should be in school? If that would not be acceptable for your daughter, why is it acceptable for any child?

16 year olds sold online in lots. Buy 100 slaves and get the armed guard free.

molojoko · 25/04/2021 09:39

Can withstand hardship

My daughters are adults and can make up their own minds.
Plus there are plenty, plenty of high street shops etc that use sweatshops. Your use of 'believed to be' is your view. Unfortunately the world really isnt a very fair place to live.

HeadNorth · 25/04/2021 10:44

Unfortunately the world really isnt a very fair place to live.

That is certainly true, but we can choose whether we wish to contribute to that unfairness or try in some small way to mitigate it. Checking the provenance of the clothes we buy is a minor effort in the age of Google -here is a link that you can use to check all high street shops, because, as you point out, many use sweat shops: goodonyou.eco/how-we-rate/
Or buy second hand, so the clothese already exist and you are helping to prevent landfill.

@Nat6999 Are you seriously saying that your logical response to “well I bet these other shops have poor working conditions in their factories too” is “oh well they’re all as bad as each other, may as well buy from Shein” instead of “ok so I won’t buy from any shop which I suspect of exploiting its workers”?

Are you actually serious?

wishywashywoowoo70 · 25/04/2021 11:14

I've bought quite a lot for DD9 and been surprised how nice it is.
Had a couple of tops and sweaters for myself and they've been great. Better than Primark for sure.
Obviously some of the stuff is random AF but be careful what you order and you'll be fine.
