I am interested in what my contemporaries are wearing to work and at home. Just turned 45 and feel I need a bit of a wardrobe overhaul..

I live in jeans/cords and sweatshirts/shirts at the weekend running around after a 6 and 8 year old and smart casual dresses for work. I feel like I need a confidence boost... tell me about your wardrobes please!

ComeOnGordon · 12/01/2020 19:57

Mom jeans look amazing on my skinny 18 year old daughter. On me they look bloody awful

boredboredboredboredbored · 12/01/2020 20:04

I'm 43. I generally like the Cos / toast so pared down utilitarian style. Bought some Doc Martens Chelsea boots lately that I love wearing with dresses and a whistles leather jacket. Also like in Skinny jeans & Stan Smiths with a white shirt.

Ellapaella · 12/01/2020 20:18

@pippaskeeper I buy quite a bit from new look and occasionally from Primark - I do buy from some of the more expensive high street places but I've had some really nice dresses from New Look over the last year.

Filmtalk · 12/01/2020 20:28

pippaskeeper I bought a few things last summer from h&m that wore well. Quite plain dresses/tunics. Really good value. I don't have a lot of money for clothes.
I tend to buy reduced things only at Cos. Can't afford full price or many of the other brands. I have a couple of dresses put away for next summer that I bought at the end of last summer from £70 to £18.
I also wear things until they have worn out and try to tell myself it's good for the environment! I don't worry about trends so can buy ahead and wear for a couple of years.
I keep an eye out for trainer bargains on mandm. They have had some really good ones at times.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 12/01/2020 20:32

phonelock as far as I can gather, mom jeans are high waisted, tapered to a cropped ankle. HTH Grin

Thankssomuch · 12/01/2020 20:47

Well tomorrow I’m wearing a black silk shirt (pussy bow), black cropped wide legged trousers, Veja trainers, silver jewellery. I’m 50 and a size 10 - whole outfit is White Company but I love Jigsaw, occasional Hobbs etc.

Queenoflaundryland · 12/01/2020 22:55

What ever the f* you want.

JustaScratch · 13/01/2020 06:52

This thread is interesting! I'm 42. I don't really get time to shop, so tend to go in whatever shops happen to be in the stations and airports I have to travel through - which is usually Monsoon, Oliver Bonas and unexpectedly, Laura Ashley. Laura Ashley is mostly naff, but every so often I'll find something extremely wearable in the sale like pale blue ankle grazers, or a simple navy dress.

Preference is knee length or midi dresses / skirts with boots, bootcut jeans (skinnies make my legs look like parsnips) and decent knitwear, I have a couple of oversized knitted jackets or scarves. I do find as I get older that fewer better quality pieces, or at least better fitting, make me look and feel more human. I try and go for little details. My new year's resolution is to blow dry my hair every time I wash it and have my nails done more often!

GlamGiraffe · 13/01/2020 07:07

Leather mini is skirt yesterday with skinny black polo neck, in fact lots of skinny jumpers, usually in black, a few in camel, some with matching cardigans (im always freezing) and maybe a long sleeve scoop neck top underneath. Bottoms black mainly pencil skirts, smart knitted dresses,-usually black. Nice costume jewelry in subtle diamond, white metal effect.
Casual, similar scoop neck top with lycra strappy vest underneath, black jumper, black nice leggings, lycra dresses- also black, casual knitted dresses.
ALWAYS high heels! Even with leggings -usually over the knee skinny stiletto boots (I fsound like a hooker). Stilettotes with smart clothes, round toe chunky heel high shoes for casual.
My look is a distinctive uniform but it suits me and my character.
Oh and very, very long black flared military style coat on top (I'm tall).
I've now realised how utterly bizarre it sounds written down! Basically just black with high heels and jewellery!

Azura2019 · 13/01/2020 07:14

Work - Smart Casual - Dresses / Skirts , tights and ankle boots. Or 7/8 trousers, printed tops, cardigans & flats.
Leisure - jeans, cotton t shirts / cashmere jumpers, calf length boots or trainers.

ColleysMill · 13/01/2020 07:16

Im 41. My best mate has given me up as a bad job clothing wise after years of trying to smarten me up Grin

In work i have a uniform but out of work i live in jeans/flares/cords/dunagrees, band tshirt and hoodies. Usually with DMs/converse/biker boots. If im going out i usually wear a denium skirt and some kind of rocky style top and leather jacket or dunagree dress. And boots. Always boots.

My hair is a similar mix of just got out of bed messy/mad and wild. Polished I am not. I can do smart for weddings/funerals/christenings but it doesnt feel like me.

Tbh Im unlikely to change my style now and Ill probably be buried in my Halestorm tshirt.

Zinnia · 13/01/2020 09:35

Fascinating thread!

47, 5'9", size 14 12 in my head
Shop mainly in COS, Uniqlo, Toast

Work: office-based, creative/media, London
Wide-leg trousers or midi skirts with slouchy roll- or v-neck jumpers (merino or cashmere), Chelsea/ biker boots or trainers. Also a big fan of J Crew "Tippi" crew neck merino jumpers, neat with a flattering neckline. Spring & summer swap jumpers for long- or short-sleeve tees, cotton blouses and blazers. Partial to a French tuck.

In the office today for example I'm wearing burgundy crop wide-leg trousers from COS with a dusky pink crew-neck sweater layered over a caramel jersey long-sleeved roll-neck. White trainers.

I am my work outfits with the Stylebook app as otherwise I'd end up in black every day!

Home: 11yo + 8yo
Mostly straight-leg or boyfriend jeans or loose canvas trousers with chunky oversized jumpers in winter or T-shirts in summer.

AsCoolAsKimDeal · 13/01/2020 09:46

Ooh I love a Tippi Zinnia

MerlinsButler · 13/01/2020 11:52

Love this thread. I'm 46 and until recently basically lived in skinny jeans and boots with a grey t shirt for going out.

I work from home so slipped into a rut of hush harem pants and a jumper.

Just downloaded the Stylebook app and spent the weekend uploading all my clothes. Have bought some lovely stuff in the sales so determined to make more effort this year.

There is a great outfit of the day thread on here and also the Hushistas thread which has really inspired me to do better!

MadamShazam · 13/01/2020 14:37

I'm 43
At home, jeggings, plain long sleeve tops, jumpers. Or leggings and dresses.
At work, slim fitting black harem trousers, or ankle grazing check trousers with plain tops or shirts.
I feel like I need a wardrobe overhaul to be honest, but living in the country, its more about practicality than style. I live in boots or walking shoes!

twosoups1972 · 13/01/2020 15:22

@flowery where do you buy your jumpers for wearing with short skirts please? I find most jumpers are too long.

flowery · 13/01/2020 15:36

I have these little short sleeved jumpers in several colours, plus similar things from a couple of other places. Basically I just go for quite close-fitting jumpers, and they’re usually short enough. I think loose fitting ones probably tend to be longer. Plus I am long waisted which helps. When it’s a bit warmer I switch to long sleeved t shirts instead. With cardigans I always choose cropped, otherwise my waist disappears.

Loop3x5 · 13/01/2020 15:37

43 sz 10/12

I work from home but I tend to have a work style of midi loose fit dresses. Uniqlo heattech leggings and top underneath in Winter. Biker Boots or trainers. Occasionally Crop trousers & knit.

Skinny jean's & knit or more midi loose dresses for out of work. I know I need new style jeans but cba to go and work out which style look alright on me.

flowery · 13/01/2020 15:52

This is what I look like most of the time between October and April. That’s a white arrow pointing at me...

If you are a 45 yr old woman .. what do you wear?
Growingboys · 13/01/2020 21:36

Jeans, cashmere jumpers (Jumper1234, Wyse etc), t shirts at weekends.

Jeans, silk tops (Trilogy sort of thing), dark cashmere jumpers, shirts at work. Or the odd little black dress, leather skirt and cashmere jumper get up.

Running clothes for running and dresses for parties. My legs are decent but don't want to be mutton.

Oly4 · 14/01/2020 22:13

For winter casual I wear jeans and one of a million jumpers.. might switch to shirts in spring.. then summer is dresses. All with nice jewellery and expensive coats and handbags... I find if the external bits are great quality anything else looks ok

TheReef · 15/01/2020 08:38

Today I'm wearing Skinny black trousers with knee high boots and a black and white smart tunic for work. Home will probably consist of skinny jeans and a jumper, with biker boots. A scarf and my Barbour jacket come out if it's cold

Does anyone else struggle with jeans? I'm 5'3" and apart from skinny or boot cut, jeans just look shit on me. Straight leg looks boring, and anything else makes me look like a fat dwarf

helpmum2003 · 15/01/2020 10:14

Thanks OP I'm loving this thread (age 49); I live rurally and have to do a lot of clothes shopping online.

Just wondering about Cos and Hush sizing. I'm size 10 top and 8-10 bottom. What sizes would you recommend I went for? I'm 5 foot 4 and not sure if some of the baggy Cos stuff would swamp me?

Thank you

Jemimapuddleduk · 15/01/2020 11:55

I’m 41 but thought I’d respond.
At home- skinny jeans in various colours with sweatshirt, knitwear and boots (flat Chelsea) or trainers. Big parka.
To go out - midi dress, midi skirt or jumpsuit and heels. Leather jacket.
Work- midi skirt, midi dress or pencil skirt with knitwear or scoop neck 3/4 sleeve jersey top. Heels or knee high boots. Wool trench coat.
