If you are a 45 yr old woman .. what do you wear?

I am interested in what my contemporaries are wearing to work and at home. Just turned 45 and feel I need a bit of a wardrobe overhaul..

I live in jeans/cords and sweatshirts/shirts at the weekend running around after a 6 and 8 year old and smart casual dresses for work. I feel like I need a confidence boost... tell me about your wardrobes please!

Home. Stretch jeans or soft trousers. Lots of knitwear, it’s cold up here.
Summer similar with pretty blouses, a skirt on the few days of summer.
Work. Jeans. Jumpers. Waterproof or or fleece. Trainers or wellies. I run a kennels.

Legoandloldolls · 11/01/2020 20:21

Leggings or leggings and a tunic style dress or smart blouse with no buttons with Jean's normally. Nearly always in boots too. I had smart casual dress at work so both looks are similar except no jeans at work ( corporate office) and it's more dress like than tunic style. Still leggings and boots though. If I ever where heels they come off unless I'm away from my desk

49

Today I wore:
black skinny jeans - Levis
grey cashmere jumper - ancient M&S
coat - Cos
Trainers - Paul Smith

At work I tend to wear dresses from either Boden, Jigsaw or Fatface or pencil skirts (current favourite is Jigsaw) or cropped trousers (Boden, M&S, Next).

At home I tend to wear Hush harems or joggers, or Mint Velvet leggings, with ancient cashmere or a long cardigan.

I struggle with tops, both for work and casual and realised today that I have nowhere near enough jumpers or plain tops. I have a couple of Boden Ravello tops for work that I wear with a blazer, and a couple of plain black scoop neck tops from Jaegar, but I really need to go shopping for some good basics! I like the Jigsaw modal lace camisoles as a layer under low cut dresses, or under jumpers for warmth etc.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 11/01/2020 20:28

Well timed thread. My wardrobe needs a bit of an overhaul. I'm desperate for some smart casual weekend wear - for going out for lunch, drinks, pictures etc. Also hourglass-ish but with short and chunky legs!

Can generally be found in jeans (but don't like any I have), light sweater and boots at this time of year, or if staying at home, hush Aimee joggers plus t-shirt or sweatshirt. Work is usually a dress for ease (because I'm rubbish at smart casual).

Passthecake30 · 11/01/2020 20:39

I struggle as I'm 6ft wth long limbs and find only long tall Sally and next tall will do, so it's generally quite a small choice.
I tend to live in skinny jeans and long sleeve plain or striped top and boy friend cardigan or hoody at home.
Work is black skinnies, black jeans with Chelsea boots or knee length tight black skirt with brogues. Shirt and jumper in the winter (cold office)
Narrow leg ankle grazers in the summer with a small selection of tops, either sleeveless or capsleeve (hot office in summer) - which has reminded me I need to keep an eye out for more!

VioletCharlotte · 11/01/2020 20:50

My wardrobe really needs an overhaul. I live in leggings and jumpers at home. For work I wear cropped trousers and a top and brogues, or leggings and a long short with ankle boots. I'm so bored of my clothes. None of my jeans are comfortable. I really like the way the 'skinny mom' jeans look, can anyone recommend any? The normal mom jeans make me look huge. I have a couple of maxi/ midi dresses which I've worn out with boots/ trainers and a biker jacket look, but it seems to always be too cold and wet to wear anything except a big coat with a hood!

Purplecatshopaholic · 11/01/2020 21:23

I probably wear similar stuff to what I always have, it’s just better quality and a bit more expensive now. Weekend today so chilling in the house in Stella grey leggings, slouchy socks from M&S and a fitted slogan tee. Working week is fitted jersey dress or cigarette pants, or a suit if formal meetings. Always heels too, lol. Friday is Dress Down, so yesterday was skinny Vintage 1 jeans, heeled ankle boots with a sweater and faux fur jacket. Love skinny jeans and heeled boots combo. Also obsessed with pashminas in this weather!

HepburnKNotA · 11/01/2020 21:49

I’m 43.

I do the school run then work from home but I like to make an effort. It’s not me to just chuck on any old thing; it makes me miserable. That said I’m still pretty low maintenance!

I usually wear one of the following combos:

Hush printed leggings/big slouchy jumper/Trainers/good coat and one of my (many!!!!) nice cross-body bags (I used to spend all my spare cash on bags pre-DD so I have some good ones)

Denim midi/slogan T shirt/sweatshirt or cardi/military jacket (hush again and one of the most worn things in my wardrobe)/flat knee boots or chunky ankle boots with Cuban heel/good bag.

Smock/tunic-style or shirt dress, Usually mini length/cable tights/chunky ankle boots/good coat

Dark skinnies (don’t care if they’re out)/slogan T shirt/chunky cardi or man’s sweater/trainers

Occasionally floaty printed midi skirt/chunky jumper/ankle boots/military jacket

Rotating those kinds of combos, sometimes depending on what other things I have going on in my day (I definitely wouldn’t do the leggings one if I had a meeting for example), keeps me interested and makes me feel good about myself.

But I have always really loved clothes (rather than fashion) so perhaps I put way more thought into getting dressed than I need to given that my life is mostly school run/at home by myself!!!

Trousers: cropped wide-leg, either wool or cord. Cos are a good fit for me, and I have multiples of the same pairs in different colour ways.

Skirts: a-line, mini-ish. I have a couple of leather ones, black, and dark green, which were £££ but excellent investments. Always 100 denier opaques with short skirts. I like midi length in summer, with bare legs.

Tops: fitted jumpers, either crew-neck or polo-neck. Tucked in or very slightly cropped do they sit on the waist. V-neck cardis with t-shirts underneath.

Footwear: Chelsea boots, DM Church boots, Stan Smiths (I have black, and white), Vejas, Continental 80s.

Jeans: Whistles barrel-leg, or Levi 501s.

Dresses: midi-length, although I find this harder to wear in winter.

Coats/jackets: various faux furs, big parka with hood, wool pea coat, black leather biker, denim jackets for spring/summer - one fitted, and one over-sized.

I shop in Cos, Other Stories, Topshop, Arket (great cardigans), Whistles, Warehouse, and the odd thing in Zara, H&M, and ASOS.

At home I am a complete slob - joggers, bobbly jumper, fake Ugg boots. I’m either “done”, or “not done”! I work four days a week in a fairly creative job, so don’t need to look formal.

ChipsRoastOrBoiled · 12/01/2020 01:57

I'm 49. I have lots of trousers, mainly black and navy, but some checked ones, too. I think bootcut is most flattering on me. I also love ankle grazers but I prefer jeans in a straight cut. M&S and Next are my go to shops for trousers.

In the last year I've started wearing midi skirts with a fitted top and trainers; comfortable and I think the look works on me.

For my top half I have some fitted, double front jersey tops in ivory, white, black & navy. Quite a few tees in various colours & sleeve lengths. I have a few soft shirts and I love popover style tops, too, and linen mix tops which are fab for summer.
Unfortunately, I can't wear heels so i have lots if ballet flats, round and almond shaped toes and also some pointed tie flats for when I want to look a bit smarter.

I think accessories can really help to complete and outfit so I have loads of necklaces in every colour and varying lengths.

StarlightLady · 12/01/2020 04:55

I am a great fan of the humble dress for day to day wear including business.

I have a multi-functional suit (bought in France) that, with the jacket gives you the option of a short sleeved dress or fitted trousers or a knee length skirt; fantastic idea for business wear.

About the house, coffee with friends, popping to the shops etc, leggings and a jumper in winter, sun dress in summer.

Winter country walks: jeans.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 12/01/2020 07:42

I tend to live in jeans, converse, knitwear. But have recently started wearing more denim/jersey dresses with leggings and ankle boots. Trying to be a bit more adventurous 😂

And I’ve recently discovered jeggings, White Stuff ones are good. Also been wearing some of their cotton tops and knitwear. I’m also looking at what clothes are made of more. Anything 100% polyester or acrylic is out.

Brands generally are Next, White Stuff, Fat Face and charity shop finds.

Cheesymonster · 12/01/2020 07:53

I'm recently allowed to wear jeans for work so I live in jeggings day in, day out. Either ankle boots or trainers. I have loads of the primark long sleeve stripy tops and I also like huge scarves. My 7yo DD is way more stylish than me Blush

Shockers · 12/01/2020 08:08

I’m waiting for surgery and am struggling to dress myself. The current look is elephant print harem pants (I have these in two colours because they were cheap), slip on wool loungers from Allbirds (no laces to bend to do up), and whatever top looks the least creased.

I look a right bobby dazzler.

SomewhereNow · 12/01/2020 08:15

I’m 46, single mum and work in a creative but very casual role. Size 14-16, not very tall with boobs and a bum but more squishy than Kardashian style 😂

I live in jeans (Levi’s Curve if I can get them in the sale, otherwise Next Petite) with either a sweatshirt or polo neck, mostly black or grey. I do like leggings/jeggings but only with a bum covering top so I’ve got a selection of longline vests in various colours (berry red, khaki, navy, black, grey). Occasionally I’ll wear a short skirt and thick tights for a change. If I need to be smarter eg work meetings I’ve got a couple of jersey dresses that fit the bill.

Footwear wise I love trainers (currently Nike Airforce Ones, Adidas Campus or Vans Old Skool) or my biker boots which go with everything. I don’t do heels very well but I’ve got a couple of pairs of low heeled ankle boots for when I need to be dressier.

For coats I’ve got a khaki French Connection one with removeable hoodie as my ‘sensible’ option then a couple of furry jackets, my leather biker and for smart a grey trench and a black jersey blazer.

I like the Hush/Mint Velvet/White Co style but try to do it on a budget eg H&M, DP, Primark, TK Maxx. It’s not worth me spending a lot on work clothes as they tend to get covered in paint etc but I do like to look nice and feel like me. For weekends I wear a very similar style but with slightly nicer versions eg cashmere jumper instead of cotton hoody.

At 46 I think I know my style which is comfortable, casual but a little bit creative (I’ve got a few piercings and like unusual but low key jewellery). It’s not ground breaking by any stretch of the imagination but it works for me.

sofato5miles · 12/01/2020 08:15

Navy wool top with silk sleeves - Cos
Wide legged houndstooth trousers - Zara
Arigato trainers
Whistles Navy trench

Zara and Cos are my go tos with jeans from American Eagle.

HelloDulling · 12/01/2020 08:24

Never wear jeans, hate them.
This winter, I have lived in a pair of thick jersey navy culottes from Gap or a pair of wool wide leg trousers, both with a varied of fine knits or denim shirts tucked in. Worn either with black lace up ankle boots or Veja trainers. I’ve got lots of necklaces, which I layer. Everything I wear is over a layer of Uniqlo heat-tech thermals. I can’t bear the feel of chunky layers, but these are really fine yet very warm.

If I go out in the evening I have a black crepe jumpsuit, and a pair of silky Chinese pyjamas and I switch between the two.

Never wear heels, only wear dresses in summer, as I don’t like tights.

sorryiasked · 12/01/2020 08:42

For work usually Jersey dresses or tunics, worn over thick tights, leggings or skin leg trousers depending on length. Usually from East or Adini, sometimes Per Una.
Can't wear heels unless they're a wide wedge so tend to wear a beloved pair of knee high wedge boots from Heavenly Feet, which are the only ones I've ever found which went round my fat calves.
For home, jeans from sainsbury's in dark blue or black straight leg, and long sleeve tshirt or tunic top. I like bum length patterned tops.

MiniTheMinx · 12/01/2020 08:58

I'm 47. My eldest son said "I bet you wore that as a teenager" and yes I did. I'm a bit indie and alternative, always have been.

I wear skinny black jeans, mini dresses, mini skirts, over sized old mens style lambs wool cardigans, floppy hats, and I wear DM boots with everything. Things I have changed.....I never have bare legs, i always wear thick tights, I usually wear higher necks, I wear more layers because I feel the cold, and I never have legs and then wear skimpy tops. It's either or. So if I show my cleavage I don't also have my legs out.....its all too much at 47.

My advice would be to tweak what you wear, not to panic and start dressing like an oldie.

Theroigne · 12/01/2020 09:03

Skinny (sometimes wideleg) jeans, Stan smiths / airforce Ones / Vejas / biker boots, cashmere jumpers, shirts, tight fit long sleeve tops, blazers etc.

Most of my clothes are from Arket, Cos, and Hush, but I also shop at Me&Em, H&M, Mint Velvet, Boden, All Saints, Baukjen and Banana Republic.

TheReef · 12/01/2020 09:14

Out if work - skinny jeans with biker type boots, oversized v neck jumpers it casual type blouse

Work - maxi skirts with tights and long, or ankle boots and fitted wrap jumpers, or straight leg trousers and longline blouse

JingleCatJingle · 12/01/2020 09:15

I’m 45 5’10 and size 12-14
I wear M&S jeggings, uniqlo merino v-necks and uniqlo heattech vests underneath (it is cold).
At work I wear jigsaw/kew dresses with fleece lined thick tights (uniqlo/primark) and more uniqlo knitwear with fitflop boots.
I am toasty warm :)

eurochick · 12/01/2020 09:24

For work I mostly wear dresses from places like Reiss, Boden, Whistles and Cos. I stick a jacket over the top for meetings. Occasionally I wear a pencil skirt and top. I have the same figure as vitaminc so rarely wear trousers for work.

Outside work I live in skinny jeans. With jumpers and chunky boots in the winter, tops and trainers in summer. Today I am wearing black Cherry skinnies from oasis, a base layer t shirt and a chunky burgundy jumper from Karen Millen.

I'm about to turn 44.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 12/01/2020 09:26

I'm 43. I tend to live in leggings and tops and cardis when at home. For work I'll wear a skirt and shirt or smart top. Sometimes a Jersey dress.

I avoid trousers due to mum tum/ muffin top and haven't worn Jeans since having kids, I dont get on with them.

Womenwotlunch · 12/01/2020 09:32

For work - small capsule wardrobe- tapered trousers, v neck fitted jumpers pencil skirts , three inch heeled court shoes
Casual wear- straight legged jeans, ripped skinny jeans( I love them, don’t care if they are age appropriate) . Long cardigans, ankle boots, V necked jumpers ( in Autumn/Winter)

Going out. - fitted black trousers, lovely blouse, fitted dresses, high heels ( slippers in bag). Fake Fur coats
