I am interested in what my contemporaries are wearing to work and at home. Just turned 45 and feel I need a bit of a wardrobe overhaul..

I live in jeans/cords and sweatshirts/shirts at the weekend running around after a 6 and 8 year old and smart casual dresses for work. I feel like I need a confidence boost... tell me about your wardrobes please!

@Retailqueenie I have a jumper obsession too! Odd question but what do you do in the summer?!?! I like a loose fitting jumper with blue jeans in the winter but can't find a summer wardrobe that has the same...knitness

At home I'm in jeans or cords (5 pocket style so like jeans) a short-sleeved T and a cardigan, ankle books or shoes but never trainers/plimsols. In the summer it's similar: short-sleeved T, usually V neck or scooped, with linen crops or shorts and cotton/silk cardigan with sandals or moccasins.

Today it's cinnamon cords from Eddie Bauer, navy V neck from Boden and burgundy chunky cable cardigan from Woolovers with burgundy sheepskin mule slippers.

At work I wear shift dresses, tan tights and clark's flats or cotton trousers from Sainsbury's men's dept. and a naice top with clark's loafers. And always a colourful scarf since the main pieces tend to be solids.

In general, my style is preppy. I look for quality pieces in natural fibers with texture or subtle patterns. Often my shoes are the most interesting part. I don't shop much on the high street because I don't like mixed fabrics or passing trends. Remember when everything had a non-matching piece of lace stuck on it? Those 'cold shoulder' tops don't appeal to me either.

Not everybody likes her style, but I'm usually like Kate's choices on or off duty.

Retailqueenie · 12/01/2020 11:32

GryffinDora I swap into light cotton/jersey tops - mainly from cos. They did a fab navy jersey top a couple years ago with a silk panel at the back, I have 3, plus a great cotton sweater top with shirt panel bottom - again I have 3. I also like thin cotton sweaters Wink in the summer - but when it’s really hot I’ll opt for a tee shirt (Cos do great plain kimono sleeve tees) & big necklace.

I’m much happier in the winter tho - I def struggle more in summer..

GryffinDora · 12/01/2020 11:34

@Retailqueenie sounds perfect!

MrsJBaptiste · 12/01/2020 11:35

Well today I'm in ripped jeans, a huge slouchy jumper and heeled ankle boots.

For work I might wear skinny jeans, ankle boots/pumps and a long sleeved top or a skirt, boots and blouse.

Going out, I like (bodycon) dresses or tight trousers and a top & blazer.

MamaGee09 · 12/01/2020 11:37

I’m a skinny jeans, t shirt, jumper/cardi kinda girl, with usually converse on my feet.

Work I wear a uniform so no say in that.

MrsJBaptiste · 12/01/2020 11:38

Oh, and I go by the factvthatvif my teenage sons think I look ok then I mustn't look too mumsy!

Dontsayyouloveme · 12/01/2020 11:41

I’m 48 and wear same style of clothes I’ve worn since I was 20! Jeans, trainers (converse), t-shirts, shirts. I don’t feel the need to alter any style because of my age!

flopsytheflatcat · 12/01/2020 11:41

Skinny jeans
Jumpers or shirts with Peter Pan collars
Black Primark DM look boots which are the best boots I've ever owned

Work-jeans and boots and black polo shirt

JaneR0chester · 12/01/2020 11:50

44 and for the last year I've really taken to buffet dresses (think Zara spotty dress).

I only wear jeans when around the house, rarely wear them out.

Most days I wear dresses (used to be knee length Whistles dresses in the main, with tights in the winter or bare legs when warm). Now I've fully embraced midi /maxi shapeless dresses, I love the comfort and the non-figure hugging-ness of the style. I have Cos, Zara and Whistles long dresses which I love. I wear dresses with cardigans over the top, or a thermal top underneath.

Otherwise my fall back outfits are skirts, again I've switched over to long skirts in the last couple of years. With jumpers or cardigans.

I used to often wear heels but (is it age? Or comfort? Or fashion?) I've come round to trainers and have a small selection of trainers including platform ones (I'm short and can do with the extra added height). And flat ankle boots too, I seem to be slowly but surely giving up heels.

If I could, I'd go for the Japanese architect look all the time.

BIWI · 12/01/2020 12:04

Why does your age matter? Genuine question. If you like it, if it fits and if you can afford it, then wear it!

AsCoolAsKimDeal · 12/01/2020 12:07

Today I'm wearing a dark green cashmere sweater from Whistles, Jigsaw cropped wide leg jeans and snake print leather Converse.

JanuaryIsNotTheOnlyMonth · 12/01/2020 12:19

49, and unfortunately at that stage of ‘Is it me or did someone just turn the heating up?’ about every half hour - so the priority is currently natural fibres, in easily removable layers.

I work mostly from home and wear out one pair of jeans, with cotton or light cashmere cardigans (mainly oxfam); or tunic length jersey dresses with a pair of Ugg boots that are on their fourth winter.

Filmtalk · 12/01/2020 12:25

Down time - all Cos. All heavily reduced in sales. Mainly dresses tunics big jumpers, sweatshirts. Cos trousers aren't great on me so usually with with tights, leggings, very occasionally jeans.

I think the age thing is interesting as I used to live in little skirts fitted tops and heels. It has taken me to this age to wear clothes that are comfortable and that I like - but not necessarily the most attractive/flattering.

Very sensible footwear. Chelsea boots, brogues trainers.

Littlemiss74 · 12/01/2020 12:28

Following as have same dilemma. Currently going through my clothes having bought some new bits in sale. Nice items but don't know what goes with what anymore!

Im 40 always in midi fitted dress with leggings cardigns or any type of dress.
Age doesnt matter its what u feel best in.

makingmyway10 · 12/01/2020 12:47

I have just turned 45. I wear jeans at this time of year, bootleg and skinny leg ones with shirts mostly from crew clothing or Phase Eight or the boring but classic Breton top and knitwear or just knitwear. I accessorise with scarves and jewellery. For work I wear dresses mostly from Hobbs, Phase Eight, and Sea Salt . I have neat cardigans for warmth and smart jackets for when needed. I also like casual dresses, needlecord or jersey with thick ribbed tights and jumpers for casual wear at home.

Not the height of fashion but entirely appropriate for my lifestyle and age. Grin

In the summer I wear Summer dresses both at home and smart ones for work.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 12/01/2020 12:56

work - slim/skinny trousers, patterned long sleeved shirt in summer, uniqlo merino jumper in winter. Boots in winter, pointed flats in summer.

home - skinny or mom jeans, shirt or sweatshirt, stan smiths
midi dress and boots if going out.

I am always on the casual side, and probably quite "safe". But that's fine, I'm middle aged, like to be comfortable, and find all those try-hard "i don't dress like a mum" insta persons properly nauseating.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 12/01/2020 17:28

Anyone else just been googling what mom jeans are?! Never heard of them till this thread Blush

pippaskeeper · 12/01/2020 19:05

This thread is so interesting. I notice you mostly go for what I think of a very expensive brands. Whistles, Jigsaw and the like. With so many other things to spend money on, I've still been buying New Look, Dorothy Perkins, H&M and so on. Does anyone else buy in this price range and make it work?

I work with a lot of much younger people so much as I'd like to say age doesn't matter it does make me more self-conscious about things like bare arms and legs in the summer. I usually wear black jeans/jegging/thick tights with a jumper or tunic & boots in the winter. I would really like to wear more colour and have been struggling to find things. Hopefully this thread will help!

Gwynfluff · 12/01/2020 19:17

Also shop arket, cos, &otherstories, zara, whistled has had a good season, warehouse (again good season) and some topshop. Wait for 20% off and I’ve noticed there are lots of standard sizes left even though it’s the end of the sales.

Casual - mom/slim/skinny jeans and trainers. Love a good sweatshirt.

Work ankle grazers, some pleather this season, silk shirts and fine knits.

PhoneLock · 12/01/2020 19:41

You are not alone. I did too.

The trouble is that I'm not sure that I am any the wiser...

Mom jeans is a humorously pejorative term for a type of women's jeans worn in the 1980s and early 1990s, considered to be unfashionable and unflattering to the wearer's figure.
