I LOVE M&S!!

Their food is fabulous and much nicer (in our opinion) than Waitrose on the whole. We order food for special occasions which makes everything so much easier and the clothes/homeware just just lovely quality!

I’m laid here in an M&S jumper right now that was SO nice when I got it home that I went back for a second one! I love their baby clothes too! It’s all just nice. The only thing I find ‘frumpy’ are the maternity bra options - HOWEVER they are the most comfortable pairs I have!

I really dislike the ‘frumpy, middle class, middle aged woman’ comments M&S gets though. I’m a (relatively) trendy mid twenties and LOVE it!

I read a thread on here not long ago about fashion advice and the woman said ‘I just don’t want to look like a frumpy middle aged woman who shops at M&S’ 🤔😡 I did have a smile to myself and think ‘don’t blame your poor style choices on M&S!’

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/10/2019 10:41

OP - I hope you're out somewhere rocking your boots and enjoying yourself with no embarrassment. What a bloody ridiculous comment!

MoltoAgitato · 31/10/2019 10:52

They’re like any shop - his and misses. I’ve got some great skirts out of them lately - pleated and midi length, good quality, wash well, not expensive. I do wish they would sort out stock though - they had a lovely houndstooth blazer that sold out straight away. I’ve always found their shoes excellent quality.

Boofybear1 · 31/10/2019 11:30

Old fashoined and out dated.
Dont know who they cater for as they dont seem to know either.

Oly4 · 31/10/2019 12:03

I’m pleased to see I’ve managed to divide opinion so strongly and I will definitely survive Grin Fine if you think the boots are an embarrassment, I think they are brilliant quality and are looking great with my dresses and skirts. Both boots look much, much better in real life than in the pics (isn’t that always the way with M&S?) but prob not everyone’s taste - isn’t that why S&B is fun?
I agree most of their stuff is hideous (rubbish fabrics) but I’m definitely finding the gems and loving the merino sweaters for 30 quid.
I also shop at the S&B darlings of Jigsaw and Hush so not totally in the old lady zone.. or maybe I am. But happily it seems....!

I do like the heatgen tights.

PickleASturgeon · 31/10/2019 13:08

I agree OP. I've bought a couple of things lately which I really like. This dress:-

and these faux leather trousers which I'm probably too old for, but I love them:-

cathpinc · 31/10/2019 13:16

I bought a pair of the heeled/buckled black hiker boots this week and my 23 yr old DD who is usually very frank with her fashion opinions said, Yes, yes, keep those! with an enthusiasm normally only reserved for brands I've never heard of. old gimmer

Ocies · 31/10/2019 13:38

The merino wool sweaters previously linked are absolutely fab. I bought a couple last winter and have just dug them out again and they still look as good as new.

huffpuffstuff · 31/10/2019 13:51

I wonder if those commenting have actually been in to a store recently. It's like a different shop. Almost like they've implemented all advice on a Mumsnet thread on what they should do to improve.

Hopeislost · 31/10/2019 14:03

@huffpuffstuff I agree! I went in recently with my 20% voucher and was pleasantly surprised.

These high waisted jeggings are a favourite! They're £15, flatten my 'mum tum', come in 3 lengths and lots of colours.

huffpuffstuff · 31/10/2019 14:08

@hopeislost I got two pairs of boots, three pairs of jeans, a new coat and some flattering boot cut work trousers. All comfy, I thought stylish and practical.
Or maybe I've just hit their prime market age (just turned 40) Hmm

LemonPrism · 31/10/2019 14:43

I'm loving the coats!!

championquartz · 31/10/2019 14:46

I think they've improved quite a bit this season. I'm not a great fan usually but I do think they're upping their game.

CadburysTastesVileNow · 31/10/2019 15:22

Some of the shapes, patterns and designs are really lovely. But almost always let down by the fabric.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 31/10/2019 15:28

Marginally. I don’t feel totally deflated anymore when I’m in there and they’ve transformed their jeans game for the better; jeggings, The Sienna (straight) and the Carrie (skinny) all flattering to this chunky short legged size 14/16.

They still make their tops too short though, way too short.

Am looking forward to buying this cosy fashion free absurdity the second Sparks give me 20% off coats:

"maybe I've just hit their prime market age (just turned 40) hmm"

Their prime age is 60, surely.
Having said that, I'm 42 and have bought outerwear from there for the first time since I was a teenager.

MelanieFrontage · 31/10/2019 17:56

I quite like M&S, I’ve got my eye on this coat...

HighNetGirth · 31/10/2019 18:01

Well, my latest work trousers are M&S, and I am pleased with them. They fit well, hang well, wash well. All for much less than other places charge. The kids have got some clothes from there which are really nice.

The thing is finding the decent stuff among the acres of poor stuff.

MelanieFrontage · 31/10/2019 18:06

Ooh I really like that padded duvet coat as well!

HighNetGirth · 31/10/2019 18:12

Clearly S&B needs to do a regular thread called “ I sifted through the dross at M&S so you don’t have to “as a service to MN.
Sales could rocket.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut I saw a woman in Mayfair last weekend who was wearing a padded coat so padded and structured it looked like she had a mustard yellow blow up bed wrapped around her! Padded coats are obviously 'the thing'.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 31/10/2019 18:26

I bought a grey cashmere jumper at the weekend. Haven't worn it yet but it's so soft.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 31/10/2019 21:04

It’s thanks to posts like yours @SarfE4sticated that give me resolve to part with the cash PLUS it fits big so it’ll be the first size 12 I’ve bought in fuck knows.
