Opinions on engagement ring...To resize or not!!!!

Hi there,

Just looking for opinions on my replacement engagement ring as I'm starting to obsess!!! So I'll start at the beginning, I somehow managed to take a chunk out of the diamond in my old engagement ring so luckily we had it insured and we got our our money through and we decided to put a little to it and upgrade slightly so choose my new replacement princess cut engagement ring. We have been married for 13 years and have to children so I already have my wedding and and an eternity ring.

My old engagement ring was an I 1/2, I have small fingers with bigger knuckles. My wedding ring and eternity ring are both a size J. So when ordering my new ring I ordered an I 1/2 but the problem now is that at certain points in the day it feels really quite tight and my fingers bulge a little, it's is also tight getting it on in the mornings (I take my rings off every night) but then at other times usually later in the day or when cooler it fits perfectly and even spins a little. My old ring was a different band style and slightly narrower.

So my dilemma is whether or not to go up a quarter of a size to an I 3/4 or just leave it. I know I don't want it at a J as my other 2 rings are a J and they do spin when my hands are smaller but they don't bother me much as they are flat but I really don't want my new ring to be to big and the diamond spinning all the time but also don't like it when it feels tight!!!

The first photo was this morning when it felt tight and the second was this afternoon and felt perfect.

Thank you to anyone who has actually got to the end of this post, sorry for rambling on....decision making is not one of my strong points!!!! smile Any opinions ladies on wearing your rings slightly to big or slightly to small?! What do u prefer?
xxx

Resize! Or you will lose that finger in the summer!

Jux · 21/10/2019 18:59

I, too, think a different order would look better.

Nicklebox · 21/10/2019 19:14

I think your rings look lovely together, the 2nd picture where they look less tight is better, i would have them resized so that they are like that all the time.

AuntyElle · 21/10/2019 19:47

They look beautiful in the second picture, so may be go for resizing.
SunshineCake: rather unnecessarily critical, especially as yours are way more crammed on than OPs’.

MrsBobDylan · 21/10/2019 20:41

Crikey, some of the replies on here! I prefer to wear my rings snug (and I have four rings stacked which would make some folk on here giddy with horror) but I go a size up for the ring nearest the knuckle as my finger starts to get broader there.

Nice upsizing op - that solitaire is a whopper!

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 21/10/2019 20:45

My eternity is a size up as its at the bigger part of my finger. I personally would resize

I think the rings are all fighting for attention with each other, the effect is all too much. Wear the eternity ring on the other hand.

Isitnearlyweekend · 21/10/2019 21:01

The three together look like far too much on your hand. I would wear the eternity on your other hand. They are all absolutely beautiful, just not all together.

Fruity77 · 21/10/2019 21:01

Lol MrsBobDylan and thank you, I love it!!

..... and agreed, I have to say some of the responses have really surprised me but am grateful for the nice ones and the constructive feedback, thank you to those. I can't wear my eternity ring on my other hand as that hand is slightly bigger and it doesn't fit any of my fingers apart from my little finger which I don't want to do. I have also tried Re-ordering them, but nothing else seems to look right other than the order I have them. I could just wear my engagement and eternity ring but not sure how I feel about that. Hmm

Think I will ponder over it some more over the next couple of weeks before I make a decision.

I agree with PPs, they’re a bit much all together. If I were you, I’d resize the eternity, so that it fits on your other hand. Then wear engagement and wedding band on the left

CJDoesTheJackal · 21/10/2019 21:34

Fruity I think they look beautiful all together. Really stunning, and they look perfectly fine in picture 2.

First world probems

Derbee · 21/10/2019 21:38

@Bellend what an unnecessary comment Confused

Doilooklikeatourist · 21/10/2019 21:38

The rings are beautiful, and I would get the ring resized to make it more comfortable for you
I wear 3 ( wedding , eternity and engagement is that order, as it’s the way they look best ) all the time , and never take them off !
I thought everyone kept their rings on

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 21/10/2019 21:42

Ring threads really do bring out the worst in people!

OP maybe you could wear one of the bands on a necklace? Your engagement ring is stunning!

AthollPlace · 21/10/2019 21:43

You’re talking about making it bigger by about 0.05mm in diameter and 0.2mm in circumference. I greatly doubt that will make much of a difference.

PunkHairToday · 21/10/2019 21:57

I thought everyone kept their rings on

DoIlookLikeatourist Aren't you worried the stones of your engagement ring will be damaged, or the setting? Do you wear precious stones for housework, gardening, mucky jobs? It won't do the rings any good.

Doilooklikeatourist · 21/10/2019 22:06

@PunkHair
I wear marigolds 👍

Kittenmouf · 21/10/2019 22:08

You can resize to a larger ring so that it fits comfortable over your knuckle and then have the jeweller add two 'balls' of the metal that your ring is made of to the inside of the band on each side. This is what I had to do with my engagement ring as the diamond was quite large and I have skinny fingers so it kept slipping round. I couldn't size down because I would have the problem if it being too tight over my knuckle. Just DM me if you want me to show you a pic of what I mean about the two balls!!

mrsrhodgilbert · 21/10/2019 22:17

I also can’t believe some of the reactions you have had. A wedding, engagement and eternity ring are meant to sit together on the same finger. Everyone I know has them this way. Your rings are beautiful and well balanced, you just need to get the sizing right. I actually have four rings and I wear them 24 hours a day, no problem. I think there are some jealous people on here.

sheshootssheimplores · 21/10/2019 22:24

I think they look really nice too!! No idea why you’re getting so much negativity Confused

SunshineCake · 21/10/2019 22:24

@AuntyElle don't be silly. Mine aren't crammed on at all.

Idontwanttotalk · 21/10/2019 22:26

"I have also tried Re-ordering them, but nothing else seems to look right other than the order I have them."
Can you reverse the order and post another photo? It may be that you think they look wrong in a different order jut because you are used to it that way.

CJDoesTheJackal · 21/10/2019 22:46

This.

Alonglongway · 21/10/2019 22:47

Showed this to DD who’s training to be a jeweller. She says her teachers advise against 1/4 size alterations as it’s outside standard practice. She’s training at a college with very traditional teachers so you may find jeweller who disagrees and is happy to do. She says the key point is that if this is a ring that may be passed to someone else in future, the unconventional resizing could become a problem.

Don’t think this is massive issue but thought it might be of interest
