Can I wear this dress to a funeral?

I'm attending a funeral next week and tried on my suit only to find that the skirt no longer fits (I put on some weight over winter - I am working to get rid of it but obviously won't be able to do so in the next few days). I have another skirt that does fit but is a little bit tight so I'd rather not wear it if I don't have to.

I wondered if I can get away with this dress instead? It is a dark dress, albeit with white flowers. I'd be wearing it with black heels and either a cardigan or my suit jacket, depending on the weather.

(It hangs weirdly on the hanger but it looks much better when it's on, I promise! I can try and dig out a pic of me wearing it if that helps)

Can I wear this dress to a funeral?

God, no.

CIT80 · 10/05/2019 11:34

I would say yes x

Greyhound22 · 10/05/2019 11:34

It's absolutely fine.

I've (sadly) been to quite a few funerals lately - no one seems to go for the whole black anymore just muted colours. No one will bat an eyelid.

Apileofballyhoo · 10/05/2019 11:35

I think it's fine.

Thiswayorthatway · 10/05/2019 11:36

Yes. Sorry for your loss

cheeseandcrackers · 10/05/2019 11:36

Yes of course, why not?

NataliaOsipova · 10/05/2019 11:36

I’d say no on an initial look - but with a black jacket and tights/heels it might be okay. That said, as long as you look smart and sombre, I don’t think anyone will pass comment, especially if you’re not close family.

Runkle · 10/05/2019 11:36

Yep fine

Miffymeow · 10/05/2019 11:37

Totally fine I'd say, personally I'd make sure i was wearing black tights and something long sleeved, as you say a cardy or a suit jacket would be perfect. x

janeybumtum · 10/05/2019 11:37

It is usually preferable to wear all black (plain black) to a funeral. It does depend a lot on what the family are likely to be ok with. Could you get an inexpensive plain black dress, perhaps from a supermarket? If that's not possible, do you have a thin black jumper or cardigan which does all the way up you could wear over it so it looks more like a patterned skirt and a top? The main thing is looking like you've tried to comply with the expected dress code and being there to support the family/friends. I'm very sorry for your loss.

TrickyKid · 10/05/2019 11:37

Yes, perfectly fine.

LoafofSellotape · 10/05/2019 11:39

Of course it's fine and no need for jacket and black tights etc. As long as you aren't drawing attention to yourself by wearing very short/revealing clothes then pretty much anything is acceptable at funerals these days- I've been to loads recently sadly.

Sorry for your loss OP.

Ocies · 10/05/2019 11:39

Yes, of course, it looks absolutely fine.

LoafofSellotape · 10/05/2019 11:40

A cardi with it will be perfectly fine.

puma84 · 10/05/2019 11:41

Yes it's fine

EugenesAxe · 10/05/2019 11:41

I really wouldn’t have an issue with that. I’m surprised by the vehemence of the ”God, no”

I would wear high denier black tights with it though.

Disfordarkchocolate · 10/05/2019 11:41

It's perfectly fine. Smart and not too bright is what's done nowadays unless someone in the family asks you to do otherwise.

CherryBlossom23 · 10/05/2019 11:43

I think its absolutely fine but where I come from only the close family wear all black to funerals, everyone else just wears smart clothing regardless of colour.

EnglishRose1320 · 10/05/2019 11:43

Absolutely fine, it's very rare that people wear all black to funerals this days, as pp have said as long as it's a respectable outfit I think that's all that matters.

Blackorblack · 10/05/2019 11:46

I'm surprised anyone has said it's not fine, especially with a jacket or cardigan.

AdaColeman · 10/05/2019 11:47

I think it would be suitable, especially with a black jacket.

KnackeredMoo · 10/05/2019 11:48

Yes that's fine with a dark jacket over the top.

puma84 · 10/05/2019 11:52

@CherryBlossom23 I think its absolutely fine but where I come from only the close family wear all black to funerals, everyone else just wears smart clothing regardless of colour.

Same.

JaneJeffer · 10/05/2019 11:53

Of course you can.

Roussette · 10/05/2019 11:54

Why god no? It's a dark dress. Gone are the days when you dress head to toe in black.

I've been to more than a few funerals, and seen dark plum, navy, dark brown, tweed, and dresses similar to yours.
