Smart, warm, waterproof, hooded coat that's not enormous

Help! I finally broke down and ordered a Seasalt Janelle II and I look like a tiny child in an adult's coat. I am 5 foot 5 and normally an 8-10 in clothes but this swamps me completely and looks absolutely terrible. It is going back. I don't know why I bothered with Seasalt because I had a bad experience with a Seafolly that sounded like a packet of crisps every time I moved and made me look like a sack of birdseed.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Uniqlo's Blocktech in xs seems to fit, but is not warm. I have a Jigsaw padded coat that is warm and hooded but not waterproof. I don't want anything that makes me look like I'm off trekking. Any ideas?

would one like this suit?

BipBippadotta · 05/11/2018 12:41

That looks a bit bulky and not very waterproof to me. What I hoped for from the Janelle was something un-puffy but warm, and also kept the rain out. I don't think it exists!

I've been looking for something similar OP, I've come to the conclusion that generally "padded" or down type coats aren't waterproof. This is an exception however it's over my budget: class="underline">pid=54232712579&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=CjwKCAjw6-eBRBXEiwA-5zHaUuPnhzjljG2NkJZxmuiYUKgtEtX8QvRX24RHxUBHuZ69oapEpjRoCrdsQAvD_BwE&pdpredirect

I was in Tkmaxx earlier and tried a lovely Regatta parka, it was padded but not too thick with a decent hood and waterproof too. Sadly it was black which i didn't want so I'm currently debating this on the clearance section on their website www.regatta.com/lumexia-ii-waterproof-insulated-parka-jacket-fig/

There are also a few on Debenhams website that I like the look of too, you can filter to only show "waterproof".

I love the Isle Jacobsen coats - mine is almost 6 years old and still looks fab. They are available in 3 lengths and loads of colours. Not cheap but last years and years. Everyone I know has one - but they are a necessity in Ireland as we have rain 10 months of the year!!!!

Misty9 · 05/11/2018 14:53

I tried on some regatta coats earlier and they were pretty good. It was in a garden centre and had 50% off but might be a brand sale?

BipBippadotta · 05/11/2018 15:30

I must be a MN failure because neither Seasalt nor Ilse Jacobsen suit me at all. Sad I am liking the look of some of the Regatta ones, which surprises me as I'd thought of them chiefly as the purveyor of roomy waterproof over-trousers. Cheap, too, compared to the atrocities I've had from Seasalt.

This one looks jolly.

This one not so bad either though it does make one of the models look a bit stout.

Following! I’m finding this search a right mare, short legs are my downfall.

BipBippadotta · 05/11/2018 15:44

God yes. I have a long body and incredibly short legs. Clothes in general are an utter nightmare.

Bip I hear ya!!!! Clothes shopping is often not the joy it should be. I’m thinking of ordering this (not sure if it’s smart enough but looks warm and waterproof) www.houseoffraser.co.uk/women/tog-24-superior-lds-milatex-jacket/d840185.pd#278610928

JaneJeffer · 05/11/2018 16:15

I have a tog24 jacket, it's fleece lined and waterproof and slim fitting.

Annasgirl · 05/11/2018 17:08

Well I have short legs and I have the short Isle Jacobsen but they are a slim fit and not very cool - still it keeps me dry!!!!

BipBippadotta · 05/11/2018 20:58

This one - the Stormbridge from Joules - looks all right, though looks slimmer on the model than its shape suggests it would be on most people.

DaisyInLove · 05/11/2018 21:11

Can I ask how the Isle Jacobsen sizing works please? I'm a UK 10-12 so what would that correspond to?

And where do you buy them? I saw one website and an actual shop in Tunbridge Wells. I'd prefer to try a coat on before buying.

Thanks!

HesARealDouche · 05/11/2018 21:15

That joules one looks lovely but quite long, how does the length compare to the Seasalt?

Igottastartthinkingbee · 05/11/2018 21:17

I tried the Stonebridge on the other day, too long for me but I’m only 5ft.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 05/11/2018 21:18

Stormbridge!

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 05/11/2018 21:21

They seem to only have the site in German, but these are lovely (I have one): www.elkline.de/women/jacken.html They come up quite small.

mammmamia · 05/11/2018 21:22

I got one very similar to the m&s one linked above from mango a couple of years ago for about £80.
It’s really good and meets all your criteria OP. Might be worth having a look there or Zara.
I was thinking of changing it but this thread has made me change my mind!

Janus · 05/11/2018 21:26

This is like looking for the bloody holy grail, I don’t think it exists!!
So I’ve had a mint velvet and holister in last few years, to be fair it said something like rain resistant rather than waterproof but they were a bit nicer looking. They really weren’t waterproof in a real downpour though 😂!
I shall watch this thread with interest (but a sneaky suspicion that it doesn’t exist!!)

Believeitornot · 05/11/2018 21:30

I gave up trying to look fashionable in winter coats. I’ve got a didrikson coat - awesomely waterproof and warm here

Binglebong · 05/11/2018 21:30

I have this which I really like. Well waterprrofed and lovely and windproof. Not many sizes left there but you can probably find more on other sites.

Binglebong · 05/11/2018 21:32

Not the warmest ever btw but not cold and I layer up.

Janus · 05/11/2018 21:33

Hesarealdouche, that m&s one looks really nice actually (can’t believe I’m saying that!!). Have you seen it ‘in real life’?! I may to go and find one!

mumsastudent · 05/11/2018 21:34

any of these?

HesARealDouche · 05/11/2018 21:48

Janus; a colleague has the M&S one in red and I love it! Looks and feels really well madeand not too puffy. If I wasn't on a strict pre-Christmas budget I'd definitely get it.
