Smart, warm, waterproof, hooded coat that's not enormous

Help! I finally broke down and ordered a Seasalt Janelle II and I look like a tiny child in an adult's coat. I am 5 foot 5 and normally an 8-10 in clothes but this swamps me completely and looks absolutely terrible. It is going back. I don't know why I bothered with Seasalt because I had a bad experience with a Seafolly that sounded like a packet of crisps every time I moved and made me look like a sack of birdseed.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Uniqlo's Blocktech in xs seems to fit, but is not warm. I have a Jigsaw padded coat that is warm and hooded but not waterproof. I don't want anything that makes me look like I'm off trekking. Any ideas?

Lands End Stadium Squall is an option.

I absolutely love my Protected Species - I have the commuter version. It is absolutely water-proof (the video on-line shows the model standing under a hose! I've been caught in absolutely torrential rain and stayed lovely and dry). Plus the cut is roomy enough to fit layers underneath without spoiling the elegant lines.
It gets compliments whenever I wear it. I am thinking of ordering another one for Christmas.

And I love my Protected Species .
I had 3 separate compliments today .
When it gets really cold I will layer it up .

It is possible to get waterproof down/duvet type coats, but they tend to be expensive. Alpine Trek have quite a few in on their website, you need one that is waterproof not just water resistant/repellant.
My friend has just tried a Patagonia and Schoffell and they are both really nice coats.

spiderlight · 07/11/2018 12:42

I have a brilliant one from Decathalon that's kept me warm and dry for years. They don't seem to do the exact one I've got any more but what about this?

BipBippadotta · 07/11/2018 15:50

@Trumpton which Protected Species do you have? Had another go at an Ilse Jacobsen today and they are just not cut for my shape - really baggy on the arms and chest but too tight across the shoulders. Maybe I need to look at men's coats. Sad @Spiderlight, that one looks all right but I am weird about fluffy hoods & I can't tell if that one is detachable. So many of these it's just impossible to know how they'll work without trying them all on. Interesting re: Joules Stormont as that's on sale for £38 on the Joules website right now! May have to order and try it out.

Good spot on the joules website! I tried the stormont on the other day, too long 😭 would’ve been a bargain buy!

BipBippadotta · 08/11/2018 14:34

My bargain Stormont arrived today - a bit long and not the most flattering but I'm going to hang onto it because it's so bum-coveringly practical for the playground and because I have fond feelings towards it for being so heavily reduced. I have also ordered a Protected Species winter parka, which is way more than I had hoped to spend but if it is stylish enough to wear to work and keep me warm and dry then fuck it. If even that is ugly it's going back!

Mine is the standard parka and I wore it today in the torrential yellow weather warning rain . Lovely and dry inside it .

beanaseireann · 08/11/2018 17:11

Bip
I think the Stormount is great. Keeps you warm and dry. Really practical.
You lucky thing getting it at a bargainous price
I think this is a Mumsnet first for me- somebody buying what I've suggested

beanaseireann · 08/11/2018 17:19

I think Stormwear by M&S is a totally misleading term for clothing if it's not waterproof.
I think M& S should either change the name or make the clothing to waterproof level.

Janus · 08/11/2018 20:38

I agree, blooming M&S can’t seem to get anything right any more!!

MorrisZapp · 08/11/2018 20:44

Nothing on the high street is going to be fully waterproof unless clearly marked as such. Shower proof, shower resistant etc mean pretty much nothing.

I second the didriksons, I'm on the sixth year of mine and it looks as good as new, totally impenetrable by wind or rain.

HesARealDouche · 09/11/2018 12:21

My Regatta parka came. It fits really well and I have no problem with how it looks but it's just not thick enough for me. Really I need to spend more on a ski-type one I think. They did have some but I being a cheapskate. It'll have to go back.

HesARealDouche · 09/11/2018 12:23

*I was being a cheapskate.

"I being a cheapskate have only my thin parka".... who needs Yeats? Grin

BipBippadotta · 09/11/2018 12:50

Yeah, I always think the word 'parka' suggests something properly arctic weight - and yet most actual parkas are fairly thin.

What about a Barbour? You can add a liner and hood to most of them so you get extra warmth.

My Tog 24 arrived today and it’s fine. But I don’t love it. The pockets are a bit too low and not very substantial. When I’m wearing my parka in the freezing rain at some primary school winter sports event I’m gonna need decent pockets aren’t I?? Gah, it’s going back. Does anyone know if I paid with one 4 all vouchers l, will I get the refund back as one for all or as a Debenhams voucher? (yes I’m sick of hearing about one4all vouchers tooGrin)

MakeLemonade · 09/11/2018 13:06

This Barbour one looks good as it comes with a warm liner already.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 09/11/2018 13:25

The quality of the Barbour coats is very good, you definitely get what you pay for.

HarimadSol · 09/11/2018 13:53

I have this Peter Storm coat and really like it, but they don't have your size. Maybe one of their other ones?

beanaseireann · 09/11/2018 17:39

It's bucketing down here in Dublin at the moment and windy so you definitely need a waterproof coat.
A jacket would leave your bottom half sopping.
So much rainwear is shower resistant and barely bum covering - pah !

BipBippadotta · 10/11/2018 13:19

Just an update that I sat down on a wet playground bench in my Stormont, just to test it, and within seconds my bum was soaked. Sad. I wonder if my standards of waterproofness are too high. That Barbour one is lovely - I can't tell if the furry hood is detachable though.
