Smart, warm, waterproof, hooded coat that's not enormous

Help! I finally broke down and ordered a Seasalt Janelle II and I look like a tiny child in an adult's coat. I am 5 foot 5 and normally an 8-10 in clothes but this swamps me completely and looks absolutely terrible. It is going back. I don't know why I bothered with Seasalt because I had a bad experience with a Seafolly that sounded like a packet of crisps every time I moved and made me look like a sack of birdseed.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Uniqlo's Blocktech in xs seems to fit, but is not warm. I have a Jigsaw padded coat that is warm and hooded but not waterproof. I don't want anything that makes me look like I'm off trekking. Any ideas?

I've got the Didrikson Nancy.
Lightweight; breathable and Warm!
And fully waterproof

Janus · 05/11/2018 22:07

M&S one has sold out except black, fancied red for a change or navy, may have to go and hunt for it! Thanks HesARealDouche

JDSTER · 05/11/2018 22:28

Also a fan of Didrikson. People always comment on how nice it is. I’m size 8 and I don’t think it looks too bulky. Genuinely warm and waterproof and pulls in at the waist fit a bit of shape at least

anniehm · 05/11/2018 22:34

Just ordered a waterproof and warm coat from mountain warehouse but it practical rather than stylish. Hasn't arrived yet

SittHakim · 06/11/2018 07:19

I have an amazingly warm, waterproof and windproof coat from Jack Wolfskin - it's not this one, as mine's a couple of years old, but it's similar. Jack Wolfskin coat

BipBippadotta · 06/11/2018 07:59

Ooh, I like the Elskine ones and the Jack Wolfskin!

I was on the same quest as you OP, struggled to find something that didn't swamp me. I eventually settled on this when Debenhams had 20% off:

www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_054010330045?brand=Mantaray&cat1=Women&cat2=Coats-%26-jackets&cat3=Coats&CMP=SSH_1008547134_1366510493_54211622146&gclsrc=aw.ds&&CMP=SSH_1008547134_1366510493_54211622146&gclid=Cj0KCQiAlIXfBRCpARIsAKvManykwEsuSKX4Y8Z9K9Wpt_0hiDeU3I2RpK7rR3chK0_kObK7lvsva7waAhckEALw_wcB

It actually looks swampier on the model than it does on me. I like that it's not black or navy and it's quite versatile, have worn it lots with leggings/trainers but could just about get away with it with skirt/boots as well. I like how it sits when it's unzipped as it fits snugly around the shoulders and then follows the waistline.

Hope you find something!

Trust me that the Stormwear coat from M&S will not be waterproof!

They get a lot of complaints about the 'stormwear' claim and actually say it's not supposed to be waterproof to those that complain, so don't waste your money.

I have that second Regatta coat you posted @BipBippadotta and i love it!

I have a long body and short legs but don't feel overwhelmed in it, it's lovely and warm though I haven't tested how waterproof it is yet!!

HesARealDouche · 06/11/2018 08:56

That's so misleading from M&S! 😱

TantricTwist · 06/11/2018 09:01

I have an array of coats and Jackets and the one I always go for when it's raining is my Craghopper 3in1 style. Keeps out all rain as would a Regatta.

TantricTwist · 06/11/2018 09:03

My Craghopper is tailored so very flattering.

Wow the Elkline Coats are just amazing with the Kangaroo insert for babies, so cute and innovative.

BipBippadotta · 06/11/2018 09:50

@flutterbean that's great to know about the Regatta one! And Craghoppers suggestions are good too - I wouldn't have thought of them.

In addition to short legs / long body issue I am also triangle-shaped with broad shoulders and narrow hips and no boobs to speak of - so coats that look fitted and foxy on hourglass-shaped size 8 women tend to end up hanging empty around my chest and hips which just looks so depressing. But if I go down to a size 6 it's inevitably too narrow for my shoulders. I don't suppose any other triangles out there have particular suggestions?

I spent ages in a Cotswolds outdoor gear store on saturday trying to find just this. The lady was saying the puffa style down costs are warm but not waterproof and the waterproof coats aren’t warm! This is why I’ve spent about a month searching everywhere!

I am now going for layering. I have a slim downy coat I wear for warmth and then I bought a Northface gore tech coat that is waterproof and wind proof that goes over the top.

TheVeryThing · 06/11/2018 10:08

What about protected species, pretty expensive though.
I have the uniqlo blocktech and I wear one of their compact down jackets under it, not ideal though.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 06/11/2018 10:25

The search continues, tried on a Whistles black parker this morning. Very nice and has removable lining/fur. Tempted!

Igottastartthinkingbee · 06/11/2018 11:27

Gah! One4all vouchers are an arse. Can’t use them as part payment so I can’t afford the Joules Aspen or the Whistles wax faux fur parka. Ordered an £80 tog 24 one instead, I’ll let you know what it’s like OP.

BipBippadotta · 06/11/2018 11:39

Do let us know how you get on, Igottastartthinking! theverything - I had written off Protected Species before because their parka seemed to have 3 massive buttons on the front that looked like a real faff when your fingers are cold in the freezing rain. But that one you linked to does look nice - I will check it out!

I just bought a Didriksons Nadine - looks meh online but I'm so pleased with it!

It's their highest level of warmth (which is saying much, considering it's a Swedish brand), it's totally wind and waterproof and the cut is slim. I'm 5'5 and it falls below hips.

Also, it has thumbholes and magnetic storm flaps that automatically close over the zip and everything(including the hood) is super adjustable.

LurkYouLongtime · 06/11/2018 13:39

@Electricmonkey if I were you I'd get the 8 not the 10. The sizing isn't enormous or anything but it's on the more generous side.

beanaseireann · 06/11/2018 17:43

Joules Stormount.
It was a choice between the Seasalt Janelle or Joules Stormount.
I went for the Joules and am happy with it.
