Gifted a vintage YSL mink fur coat

Furnerves · 28/10/2018 22:59

I’ve been gifted a late 60s/ early 70s YSL mink fur coat, it’s mid thigh length and absolutely gorgeous.

Of course I’ll never wear it, does anyone know where I could sell it to get the best price.

Please no lectures on fur, I just don’t want to give this coat away and I’d rather keep it that sell on eBay for a few hundred pounds.

Thanks in advance.

I would wear it - I think the 'social rules' are slightly different if it's vintage fur. And I speak as an animal lover/ one-time veggie!

thereallochnessmonster · 28/10/2018 23:06

Why would the rules be different for old fur coats?? Animals have still been killed for them.

How much do you think. It’s worth, op?!

A few hundred pounds sounds a lot for a coat most people wouldn’t be seen dead in.

LanaorAna2 · 28/10/2018 23:06

I'm not sure where will give you more than a few hundred quid - vintage fur doesn't fetch much.

Depending on how good or important it is, try Kerry Taylor auctions in London.

Furnerves · 28/10/2018 23:08

Really!? I’d love to wear it but would be soooo scared of getting eggs thrown at me. Clearly I wouldn’t wear it to do the weekly grocery shop.

Actually, to be honest I’m not sure where I would wear it. It’s currently hanging up in our hall and I keep stroking it, it’s amazing. Yes, it’s not politically correct but it’s lovely.

Try Vestiare Collective - they take a chunk of commission but given it's YSL, you could probably get a couple of hundred for it providing it's authentic and the fur is in good condition (no moths!)

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 28/10/2018 23:09

PS I would totally wear it, most people can't tell the difference between real and fake in my experience

Haworthia · 28/10/2018 23:09

I think it’s a commonly held view that vintage fur is OK to wear because you aren’t contributing to the modern day fur trade.

I’d wear it 🤷‍♀️

Furnerves · 28/10/2018 23:13

It’s in perfect condition, as is the lining, it was gifted to my mum back in the day and she wore it a few times and since then it’s been in a cool dark room. She gave it to me today as she was having a clearout!

I just don’t know what to do with it.

thereallochnessmonster · 28/10/2018 23:22

What, and the vintage fur trade is better than today’s fur trade, Haworthia?!

Haworthia · 28/10/2018 23:30

My point being, the OP wearing a vintage fur coat is not supporting - financially that is - the modern day fur trade, so it’s a different ethical conundrum.

I realise that some people are anti-fur in all forms and that’s fine. Personally I don’t have a problem with vintage fur any more than I would vintage leather, etc. If the animal died decades ago then why let it go to waste?

Furnerves · 28/10/2018 23:33

I’ve just tried it on and it’s enormous, it’s a size 16 and I’m a small 12. I feel that I ought to sell it.

For those people wondering what I think it’s worth, I think that it must be worth £500 at least?

I’m going to email the company that was mentioned earlier, I’d love to keep it just to stroke every week but to be honest what’s the point? I’m sure that no one would touch it to make it smaller to fit me.

OP posts:
Furnerves · 28/10/2018 23:39

Haworthia, I agree, it’s such a stunning coat that if it fits someone then why shouldn’t they wear it.

If it fitted me, and after asking here, I would now wear it BUT..... it’s bloody heavy and is massive, I’m actually a little bit gutted now. having had it in for 5 mins I know that it would out perform any designer name winter coat out there, but of course it would, it’s made from a winter animal’s fur.

@Furnerves can we get a pic of the coat?

Furnerves · 28/10/2018 23:51

Two ticks, photos to follow once I’ve worked out how to post them....

I would wear it. I eat animals and sit on a leather sofa. Suppose that’s cruel as well.
No animals are being cruelly and painfully slaughtered to make you a new coat.
There is a gorgeous fur coat in my attic. It Was there when I bought the house. I’m too fat to wear it sadly. But if I was thin enough I would. Looks lovely and warm.

doubleshotespresso · 29/10/2018 00:04

Oh OP I'd wear it definitely 👌🏻

I have a few furs (mostly but not all vintage) wear them often and have only once had a negative comment, nothing worse.

Now sure where you are based but I'm certain there are a great many boutiques near me who would bite your hand off

Hahaha! It’s a very short dressing gown!

I would keep it-its an heirloom. Throw it on your bed when the nights are cold.

yakari · 29/10/2018 00:22

I had a similar situation, have to warn you the resales prices are not great. It was a good few years back but after my grandmother died we sold her coat, designer label, fabulous condition and also a size 10 - even the original receipts.
I can't remember the exact number but the price we got was 10s as opposed to 100s
There are some places in London that specialise but they take big commissions and the market is limited - just see this thread got comments about why!
Sorry but I think 500 is very optimistic.

florenceheadache · 29/10/2018 00:26

Have it reworked so the fur is on the inside and Gortex fabric on the outside.
This is a very expensive option but warm and practical.

discopisco · 29/10/2018 00:30

Op I'd love to take that off your hands but that price is faaaar too optimistic. Have a look at fur coats listed for sale on ebay...

WTFsMyUserName · 29/10/2018 00:30

You can get it altered to a smaller size or remodelled if you want to make it look more contemporary. But it will cost a bit to have it done by professional furrier.
