Gifted a vintage YSL mink fur coat

I’ve been gifted a late 60s/ early 70s YSL mink fur coat, it’s mid thigh length and absolutely gorgeous.

Of course I’ll never wear it, does anyone know where I could sell it to get the best price.

Please no lectures on fur, I just don’t want to give this coat away and I’d rather keep it that sell on eBay for a few hundred pounds.

Thanks in advance.

It looks lovely - I'd get a rough value then decide what to do based on that.

Furnerves · 29/10/2018 00:36

I’m happy with being optimistic, I’ll just keep it.

I would own it and delight that it's big on me.

Massive sunnies too!

Seriously though, you are not supporting cruelty. That's been done. Wear it, and don't buy a modern coat - there is a valid argument to be made against the modern fashion trade, working conditions, environment impact of petrochem by products in synthetic manufacturing, and carbon footprint of transp ort.

're using what exists already is far superior, ethically, than throwing it out and buying new.

Your mum probably gave you it because she thought you'd think it was fabulous and enjoy it. If she wanted to sell it, she could've done it herself.

DeltaZulu89 · 29/10/2018 01:26

I’ve just had a quick look online and I’m seeing coats selling for about £500. Have a look at Vestiaire Collective.

Rebecca36 · 29/10/2018 01:46

I sympathise. I too have a mink coat which an elderly aunt gave to me. it's in my loft.

There are animal charities which will take a real fur coat, they use as bedding for orphaned/abandoned new born animals.

I intend to donate mine but keep forgetting. Thank you for thread, it has reminded me.

BlackWitchInChildWringing · 29/10/2018 01:48

We've got something very similar but full length and use it as a winter pet bed liner. I wouldn't and couldn't wear it or sell it on for someone else to.

I have a vintage fur that was left to me by my grandmother. She died pretty poor but had clearly treasured it (we had no idea she still had it) enough to hold onto it and leave to me in her will. Apparently she remembered that I had liked dressing up in it when little!

I wear it and remember her.

Tattybear16 · 29/10/2018 06:13

I inherited my grandmothers fur coat. I wear it, I remember her saving it for best as she treasured it. It’s the warmest coat I own. I’d never sell it.

Tippexy · 29/10/2018 09:52

That is absolutely stunning.

The reason I would wear a vintage one but not a new one is because I would not be actively contributing to the ongoing slaughter of animals. The damage has been done, if you will!

PinkHeart5914 · 29/10/2018 09:57

I’d wear it and enjoy looking fabulous!

The animals dead, and has been for years it’s not like you’ve been out hunting,

Racecardriver · 29/10/2018 10:04

Such a shame it doesn’t fit. I’m the same size as you otherwise I would offer to buy it. Real fur is lovely and the anti fur types normally can’t tell the difference so I don’t think that eggs are a real concern. I wouldn’t risk selling through eBay. Find a reputable vintage clothing dealer.

WithAFaeryHandInHand · 29/10/2018 10:12

I’d sell it and give the money to PETA or something if I felt bad. Or give it to an animal charity to see what they can get out of it?

Would those who object on ethical grounds seriously prefer it went to landfill or was incinerated? I would never buy fur and have been veggie / vegan on and off since I was a child - I now do eat meat though - full disclosure and all. But since it was gifted to her, then I’d say it would be worse to throw it in the bin than to use it 🤷‍♀️.

VeganCow · 29/10/2018 14:16

The reason vintage fur is not seen as ok, is because wearing real fur is promoting publicly that it is ok to do so.
Your coat is vile. It only ever looked good on the animals it belonged to.

WithAFaeryHandInHand · 29/10/2018 14:24

I get this, but the fake furs look so much like real ones these days that I don’t think this argument is relevant anymore.

BagelGoesWalking · 29/10/2018 14:26

I'm glad you posted as I also have a fur coat that was my mum's (or possibly her mother's). I don't remember my mum ever wearing it.

I do remember wearing it once during a bitterly cold winter (must have been '81 or'82) when I had to get to a neighbouring town for my Christmas job. It was really warm! Don't think I'd wear it now though. Have been pondering whether to see if it could be made into a throw or cushion covers.

Branleuse · 29/10/2018 14:30

i love vintage fur and there is nothing warmer, but you wont get £500 for it

BlackWitchInChildWringing · 29/10/2018 15:09

I can see where people are coming from who would only wear vintage and/or to honour a beloved relative. I disagree with the justifications though. I can't forget the history, even if it's not recent, and I believe wearing fur risks normalising it. For me, it's a similar debate to, although not exactly the same, as ivory.

To dismiss people who are anti-fur as a type is also a mistake. I know the difference, believe me, and in my personal experience it's a view held by some in stately homes and in cardboard boxes and all those inbetween. It is a view that transcends class, income, background, politics, education, whatever. It is no longer seen as fashionable or aspirational, and is perhaps now as socially unacceptable as drink-driving and smoking around children. Some things are best resigned to the past.

There are other ways to look and feel glamorous, fabulous and warm.

starrynitelight · 29/10/2018 15:25

Wear it wrapped tight with a black leather waist belt, floppy hat and shades and knee high boots. YAS!

NashvilleQueen · 29/10/2018 15:28

For those saying it’s ok would you be happy to buy an ivory artefact on the basis that the animal was killed a long time ago?

MynameisJune · 29/10/2018 15:30

Wear it, if anyone asks say it’s faux fur. Only an expert would be able to tell the difference I’m sure.

WithAFaeryHandInHand · 29/10/2018 15:35

No, I’d never BUY ivory or fur, regardless of how old it is. That’s the key point here I think.

Also, Ivory is completely useless, whereas if you lived in Siberia when this coat was made, it would have been essential to stay alive. So the fact that fur was used as clothing historically doesn’t sit as badly with me as ivory. I don’t like it, but it’s not as bad.

BlackWitchInChildWringing · 29/10/2018 15:39

Anyone on the thread advocating wearing fur actually live in Siberia or suchlike?

WithAFaeryHandInHand · 29/10/2018 15:41

I don’t think you understand what I just said.

lesenfantsbouef · 29/10/2018 15:43

I would buy it as I have been looking for a similar coat actually.
