Gifted a vintage YSL mink fur coat

I’ve been gifted a late 60s/ early 70s YSL mink fur coat, it’s mid thigh length and absolutely gorgeous.

Of course I’ll never wear it, does anyone know where I could sell it to get the best price.

Please no lectures on fur, I just don’t want to give this coat away and I’d rather keep it that sell on eBay for a few hundred pounds.

Thanks in advance.

Wow! That is stunning. Shame it's too big.
I was gifted a vintage fur jacket from the 50s, I do indeed wear it at special occasions in the winter. I've never had anything but compliments although I think people assume it's faux.

OhTheRoses · 29/10/2018 17:41

I wanted a full length dark, wild mink when I was much much younger. I saw myself swishing across Kensington Gardens in it having done Ken High and en-route to Knightsbridge.

doubleshotespresso · 29/10/2018 17:42

OP I would buy this in a heartbeat having seen the pictures it is beautiful

Oxfordblue · 29/10/2018 17:44

Have it made into throw for bed/sofa/just because? You can then stoke to your hearts desire & don't have to worry about rotten eggs being thrown

If you're swayed by the label, have it stitched to the outside.

My mum gave me a sheepskin coat (from her jumble sale) & we've turned it into dog beds Wink

Hold you have it made into a sumptuous throw?

BagelGoesWalking · 29/10/2018 18:00

You could do a search on eBay for similar items, use filter to highlight sold/completed items. Then at least you can see what they've actually sold for - as opposed to what people are hoping to make.

An FB group I'm on suggested (to a recent post) John Kay Furs 020 7722 6804. "They may not buy it but would value it and point you in the right direction." I'm sure you could email them photos if you're not local.

Pretty sure Phoebe had this same issue in an episode of Friends:.. I think she gifted it to a homeless woman after wrestling with her conscience

Aridane · 29/10/2018 20:24

Phoebe loved the fur coat to her chagrin

IAmGrootGrootGroot · 29/10/2018 20:53

She did, she did. Poor ole pheebs.

Thebluedog · 29/10/2018 21:30

I’d have it made into a throw, even keep the YSL lining.

mycatplotsdeath · 29/10/2018 23:07

It's beautiful op... I would buy it if I had spare cash

princesstiasmum · 30/10/2018 00:03

I have 2 beautiful fur jackets, one i am not sure of the fur but its a dark and light alternate fur,i know its real as it still has skin on the inside, i have never, I worn it, it was given to me by my grandmother in the late 60s,it it probably from the 40s era
I also have a lovely rabbit fur one which i wore once, dare not now because of the opposition to fur, i have had that since the 80s bought by my daughter,it is a lovely cream colour, and states rabbit fur
I would love to wear it,as its so warm and luxurios feeling
Cant bear to throw them away though, and i would never buy real fur ,due to knowing how it is sourced
Both been in my wardrobe, for years

Haworthia · 30/10/2018 09:09

Just wear it princesstiasmum. You’re not going to get abused in the street. No one would even know it was real (and it’s none of their business anyway!)

I actually see loads of people wearing coats and parkas with real fur trims these days. The opposition to fur isn’t as widespread as those old PETA campaigns made us all think.

GraceMarks · 30/10/2018 10:42

You can absolutely tell the difference between real and fake fur, once you've seen real fur close up, so I think those who are insisting that you wouldn't encounter any problems if you wore it out are being optimistic.

I wouldn't wear it myself, nor would I wear real snakeskin after reading about the horrendous practices involved in harvesting the skins. I associate the wearing of furs with monied octogenarian European women who go to St Moritz for the ski season and refer to everyone as "darling". That in itself is enough to put me off, and that's before you even get to the horrible fusty smell it inevitably develops with time.

I would probably go down the auction route and then donate the proceeds to an animal charity, but that's just me and my liberal hypocrisy...

lifebeginz · 30/10/2018 10:58

i think there is a belief that in wearing vintage fur you are not supporting/contributing to the modern day fur farms...... I stumbled across a girl on instagram who restores and sells on vintage fur who is against fur farming.....for her this is a bit more moral.....each have different views on what sits well with them

madmum5811 · 30/10/2018 13:13

I inherited a pile of furs, do not ask me what, was told mink, lamb something, and fox involved. My friend took one fur for her cats bed, I have given away or worn others. These furs go back to the 30s. Unless you refrigerate them I was told they moult like dogs and cats. And they do indeed. Strangers truly cannot tell the difference when looking at it or groping. I just say isnt it good what you can fake.

The trouble is they are so heavy to be honest I prefer an ordinary coat, jacket.

MIL had one of those awful shrugs where a fox was eating its tail, that went in the bin.

grumiosmum · 30/10/2018 14:03

I am sure there are specialist designer/vintage fashion websites where you will get a better price than eBay, but i don't know what they are.

Assume you have googled?

You could try contacting YSL for advice? I was given a hideous Hermes scarf once, and they swapped it for me 2 years later ...

IamtheMistressofmyFate · 30/10/2018 14:22

I have a moleskin coat ... As it's moleskin it is difficult to tell the difference between it and fake. Also, moles were considered pests so they didn't meet their end purely for fur^

I thought moleskin was a cotton?

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 30/10/2018 14:38

You can tell just by looking at the fur on a Canada Goose coat that it's real it's lovely

Morals are easier to ignore when it's -30 and your bus is late Grin

paganmolloy · 30/10/2018 16:32

Lam I think you do get moleskin cotton - so called because the fabric rubs both ways just like a real mole's fur rubs both ways so it can go forwards and backwards along it's tunnel.

IamtheMistressofmyFate · 30/10/2018 18:38

Give over - moleskin was never made from moles Grin

Haworthia · 30/10/2018 18:49

Imagine how many thousands of little moles would be needed for a coat Grin

AuntyJackiesBrothersSistersBoy · 30/10/2018 18:53

Op, you could try this link.... I have a mink promised to me by my 80 yr old mum. She’s had it all my life and actually, before! It’s been stored and tended to over the years by a professional furrier and even if I never wear it, I will not part with it. It’s just “her” and was bought at a time when people wore fur.
