Welcome to the long-running perfume thread! All are welcome - drop in to chat about old loves or new discoveries. Ask a perfume question and someone here will know the answer.

Be warned though, we are a bunch of terrible enablers and you may wish to put your credit card in the freezer before entering Wink

The Boots 70% off sale started today, much loved by those over at MoneySavingExpert and ebayers! It's in store only though.

BluebellGal · 19/01/2018 10:06

Calm & Cheap -I’ll be posting your samples today I promise (sorry I’ve been busy lately and struggled to get to PO). I had great difficulty decanting the Amarosa so there’s only a dribble to try (but I’ve put some other random stuff in too). I can see why Ruth Mastenbroek changed all her packaging recently because the bottle / spray is rubbish! The lid also doesn’t fit. You only need a tiny bit of this as it’s such a powerhouse

SOTD 4160 Sex Goddess (the free sample). I like it - soft, powdery and violety

teta · 19/01/2018 10:31

Wearing Tobacco Rose today for the first time in weeks. Is it so wrong to really want a bottle? I also can’t find any decant suppliers of this anywhere. I am now totally bored of my winter perfumes ,so sprayed the Galbanum-heavy Mito on yesterday. It was a beautiful sunny but freezing day and seemed appropriate to wear something spring-like. Especially as the Snowdrops are peeping above the ground.

BluebellGal · 19/01/2018 13:15

Packages posted calm and cheap ... look out for the Y label!

MrsMacNally · 19/01/2018 13:52

SotD Sycomore (snagged a super-cheap sample on eBay. So cheap I'm wondering if its the real deal or a lookey-likey?). Either way it smells fabulous - the sophisticated love child of Timbuktu and Encre Noir. It does that chilly but earthy thing with vetiver, in a super-smooth way. I read that Christopher Sheldrake had a hand in this alongside Jacques Polge. Makes sense as you can feel a family resemblance to Femininite du Bois here (although that's a warmer/muskier vibe).

The Feel Unique samples arrived and don't disappoint, from the useful packaging box onwards. The ELd'O are all 2 mls and the 5ml of Gucci Bloom is in a dinky ceramic bottle. Nice (if safe?) tuberose - seems to comes from a similar place to Gabrielle?

JanetStWalker · 19/01/2018 15:01

Bois des Iles today, I rarely reach for this but I wonder why every time - it's bloody gorgeous!

On a no buy for the foreseeable so am bravely resisting all things Boots.

OCSockOrphanage · 19/01/2018 15:54

Teta, I don't know how similar it is to Tobacco Rose but I have a 13ml PP of Rose Tobacco I would like to find a good home.... DH, who dislikes scent generally and some scents passionately, found this spectacularly not to his taste, hence there is just one spray gone. PM me if you would like it.

CountFosco · 19/01/2018 17:36

Feeling very sorry for myself, dropped my box of samples and 3 broke: What I did on my holidays which at least allows me to justify buying myself a 9ml. But also the Marc Jacobs Ginger Splash and L'Occitaine Pamplemousse Rhubarb the lovely MrsP sent me when I'd just joined this thread so feeling sad about that.

In better news my Velvet Collection Box arrived (plus some lovely Molton Brown shower gel and a handbag) so I've tried the chocolate and am now trying to resist the perfume until we start The Big Sniff.

BigPuddleOfFloofyCatOnTheFloor · 19/01/2018 17:51

Oh count how frustrating Sad I haven't got any of those or I would send you decants! I have given up samples with dabbers rather than sprays as my fingers don't work so well and I generally spill them. I also dropped a brand new bottle of Chanel EP in the bathroom sink once and broke it

Totally agree re the need for Spring perfumes atm - I love winter but it's getting me down a bit now, I resorted to a sneaky spray of Jade yesterday Wink I feel the need for a "Post Christmas Winter" additional category in my perfume collection/rules. I saw daffodils for sale the other day! It's January!

My PP Gloria came and as far as I can tell is good, the top notes definitely remind me of the original but I do feel full of lurgy and not up to deep sniffing Grin I probably shouldn't be wearing perfume at all today as I am wheezing nicely, and even refused carrot cake Shock

When are you thinking of starting The Big Sniff btw?

MrsMacNally · 19/01/2018 17:57

Bad luck Count - it's horrible to lose perfume that way.

CountFosco · 19/01/2018 18:05

I did absolutely douse myself with the spillage so it went out with a bang Grin

mrsreynolds · 19/01/2018 18:57

I fancy something comforting for bed...
Might let ds2 choose...

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 19/01/2018 19:14

Oh Fosco ouch!! Poor bottles...

MrsM that's enabling encouraging feedback on the Feel Unique samples Grin

Had a Perfume Society delivery too. Not got my joining box yet but did get the Velet box and... well, I forget what it was called but the ones with the Russian Leather shower gel sample and scented tattoos. Very impressed with the packaging - very lovingly done it seems.

SotD was Zoologist Nightingale to mark my first Violetday. Completely undecided on whether I liked it as a scent but really enjoyed the process of getting all the smells- there's a lot going on with this one. The violet was there throughout but the opening inclusion of saffron was a surprise, there was some mustiness early on too and a bit of rose dancing in and out. Will need another go on this.

Have switched to a bit of Samsara now as a safe choice for the first night out where both me and DH have been present but neither DS have since October 2015 (although was pregnant at the time so I suppose DS2 was there really...). It's been a long time coming...

Calmwhoknows · 19/01/2018 20:25

mrsreynolds, I’m very fond of Sexiest Scent on the Planet. To me, it is a very comforting familiar kind of scent - citrus, woods and vanilla ice cream. I find it quite linear, which is not a problem, and it lasts about 3 hrs before becoming a skin scent for quite a while longer.

Yesterday I wore Tuscany Per Donna by Aramis. I have a small miniature of this and am eking it out. It is a rich, fruity floral with a slightly sour note which lies underneath - very interesting. It lasts 5-6 hours.

Bluebell, thanks for sending the samples! I sent my package off to you on Tuesday, so they should arrive fairly soon.

Cheap, the Bloom Violet pack looks interesting. I do like violet, both flowers and leaves. Today I put on Geoffrey Beane’s Grey Flannel. It’s very sharp and strident to start with and is supposed to dry down to a lovely violet, but it never does on me, just remains screechy sharp all the way through! 😨. I shall have to see if it smells better on DH. I topped it up with Insolence, which is a delightful soft violet, but lasts less then 2 hours.

mrsreynolds · 19/01/2018 20:49

Calm...ds2 chose sexiest scent 😁
He loves it (as do i)

Judydreamsofhorses · 19/01/2018 20:55

SOTD is JM Wood Sage and Sea Salt.

It was a no on the job - interview feedback good but successful candidate had more directly related experience to the post. I bought a lottery ticket (for the first time in about ten years) on the way home from work.

Calmwhoknows · 19/01/2018 21:03

mrsreynolds, I could try him with Sexiest Scent, but I might have to tell a fib about the name, perhaps pretend it’s called Manly Vanilla or something 😀

Calmwhoknows · 19/01/2018 21:20

Judy, I’m so sorry about the job. It’s so frustrating with interviews. It doesn’t matter how well you do, it all counts for nothing if there is someone who happens to be an exact match. But at least he knows from the feedback that he interviewed well. Better luck with the next one ... (and/or the lottery!) 💐

MrsMacNally · 19/01/2018 21:33

That's disappointing news Judy - hope you and Mr DoHs have some nice stuffed planned this weekend?

Off topic a bit, but back to the Venn diagram, have the perimenopausal perfumistas amongst us caught Menopause week on Woman's Hour? It's been good - had me wondering about whether I've been self-medicating some symptoms with perfume!

And sorry, a bit more enabling - TK Maxx online has several of the Six Scents Series in for just £17 and also the Friedemodin set that I think MrsS spotted in a branch before Xmas? I'm spent out so sharing vicariously.

mrsreynolds · 19/01/2018 22:12

manly vanilla
Ha! Love it
judy Sorry to hear your news

mrsreynolds · 19/01/2018 22:13

Oh! I'll have to see if I can listen to them on iPlayer

CountFosco · 20/01/2018 08:21

Oh Judy, sorry to hear that. Job hunting is pants.

mrsreynolds · 20/01/2018 08:39

I'm off to see a family members new house today so something fabulous is needed scent wise...
Hmmm...

LostInShoebiz · 20/01/2018 09:01

This thread is making me so poor! I've ordered 4160 Tuesdays Sex Goddess and two Bloom boxes and it's only just gone 9am.

MrsMacNally · 20/01/2018 09:47

Which Bloom boxes have you gone for Lost? Be sure to tell us about them once they arrive too !
