Welcome to the long-running perfume thread! All are welcome - drop in to chat about old loves or new discoveries. Ask a perfume question and someone here will know the answer.

Be warned though, we are a bunch of terrible enablers and you may wish to put your credit card in the freezer before entering Wink

cheap SOAD smells like Elnett to me. I have a number of samples tucked away if you would like more.

explodingkittens · 08/01/2018 10:47

SOTD is Arpege in honour of the fact I've just ordered a bunch of Jilly Coopers for some mindless, cosy winter-night reading don't hate me Blush Grin

At home with poorly ds2 so sotd is Calpol 😷

Kittens....i got riders out of the library when I was 13 because from the cover I thought it was about horses....imagine my surprise 😂

Motoko · 08/01/2018 13:36

Kittens was that inspired by the Jilly Cooper thread on AIBU? I started reading that thread last night. I've never been in the slightest been interested in JC's books (not my type), but the thread was funny and has made me curious. Not sure if I'm curious enough to actually buy one of the books though, unless I see it in a charity shop.

SOTD is the Shay and Blue Blood Oranges that I got in the M&S calendar, simply because it was to hand, and I couldn't be bothered to rummage in my perfume box! I could do with something a little warmer though.

BluebellGal · 08/01/2018 13:47

SOTD 4160 Rhubarb and custard

PerfumeIsAMessage · 08/01/2018 16:04

SoTmorning was Shalimar to try and ease me into school gently...but with 4 days before the open-all-night thing gentle is not realistically going to happen!

PP Cinnabar- hmmm. I actually thought I'd grabbed PP Beautiful by mistake. It's very sweet. A grown up sophisticated sweet, not a PM sweet (you could wear it for a posh meeting) - it smells expensive. I was trying to work out what it would be classified as- and tbh, I'd have said verging on a chypre (the grown up bit) but BH says floral oriental. The vanilla is starting to really kick in now. BH says this is less a lesser known sister to Opium and more a lesser known sister of Youth Dew and I can possibly see that, in its sweetness.

Not quite what I was expecting, but not a slinger.

mrsreynolds · 08/01/2018 16:09

I always think of cinnabar as a more grown up version of youth dew

mrsreynolds · 08/01/2018 16:14

I'm worried about the PP cinnabar now...its really not a sweet scent imo

mrsreynolds · 08/01/2018 16:18

Fragrantica has cinnabar as warm spicy and I would agree with that

explodingkittens · 08/01/2018 16:57

@mrsreynolds Grin bet that was an education!

@motoko yes it was. JC books are the guiltiest of guilty pleasures I'm an intellekchul dontchaknow. Dp is utterly horrified Wink

PerfumeIsAMessage · 08/01/2018 17:55

mrsR- exactly- there is definitely no spice. Now I have only smelled real Cinnabar, once, in passing through an airport I think. It's settled now into something soft, warm and not at all trendy and modern, but no spice at all. I vaguely remembered a softer, warmer Opium meets Shalimar.

Oh well, it's still nice enough! I will be topping it up later with Shalimar or Opium though!

CauliflowerBalti · 08/01/2018 18:05

Ladies with noses... I absolutely adored Marc Jacobs ‘Blush’, and it is long discontinued. If anyone was familiar with it - what can I get to replace it?

JanetStWalker · 08/01/2018 18:26

Have you tried Gucci Bloom, Cauliflower?

Despite having 80 FBs and nearly 200 hundred samples I still only want to wear Coromandel. I need an intervention.

mrsreynolds · 08/01/2018 19:36

Oh dear that doesnt sound promising piam

Judydreamsofhorses · 08/01/2018 21:00

SOTD is JHAG Mad Madame.

About five years ago I re-read all the Jilly Cooper Riders series of books, plus all the Flowers in the Attic series. I read/watch TV to be entertained mostly - see also: SYTTD - and have zero shame about it.

Judydreamsofhorses · 08/01/2018 21:10

Also, I have my first bit of root canal at 2.50 tomorrow (four appointments at an hour 45 minutes each!) so please send good thoughts. I am scared of the different dentist, even though he’s a top-of-the-game-incredibly-expensive-specialist-person. (Because he is a stranger, he seemed very nice. I am aware I am an idiot.)

mrsreynolds · 08/01/2018 21:11

Flowers in the attic!

Blimey that takes me back!

I went through a maeve binchy phase too

mrsreynolds · 08/01/2018 21:16

I will be sending healing vibes judy x

explodingkittens · 08/01/2018 21:24

Oh @judy, sending relaxed and painless vibes your way for tomorrow. So hope the Special Dentist can sort you out insert cringey Jillypun here Grin

I rather enjoyed Arpege today. Another wonderfully grown-up scent that I'm not sure, even at 45, I'm quite grown-up enough for...

MrsMacNally · 08/01/2018 23:15

Smells older than Youth Dew Mrs R? Is that possible Grin? Youth Dew is already very grande dame on me. .

Well EK will be expecting you to go the whole mile and get yourself some Hermes Galop.

Good luck Judy.

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 09/01/2018 07:28

Best wishes Judy! And good to know on the SoaD - will reach for the hair spray if I fancy more!! Might I guess that you have a few make up bits if you have lots of samples? I got a colour chamaeleon pencil - normally go neutral for eyes but like this as an eyeliner.

Yesterday's SotD was Midnight in the Palace Garden. Also had message/facial and the face serum smelt utterly delicious!

SotD is L'Heure Bleue marking the end of the break!

mrsreynolds · 09/01/2018 08:07

I think so...i would describe it as youth dews older wiser sister 😁
Not as sweet or fizzy as youth dew

I'm back at work today
Ds1 bsck at college
Ds2 still off 😷

I wish we were all back in routine. Oh well.

Sotd knowing

explodingkittens · 09/01/2018 08:53

Poor ds2 @mrsreynolds, hope he's free of the lurgy soon.

SOTD is Amour Nocturne, so delicious and comforting on a chilly dark morning.

@MrsM, I might well do. JC loves her scent. I'm happy to go with Arpege and Diorissimo but I'm drawing the line at Fracas, vile concoction that it is Grin

OP posts:
BluebellGal · 09/01/2018 10:14

SOTD Shay and Blue Framboise Noire- yummy juicy dark fruits with lashings of beautiful creamy oud. A gourmand but not as we usually know them.

Sending positive vibes and healing wishes to you judy

Get well soon all poorly peeps and dependents. Been reading about Aussie flu and contemplating flu jab for first time (I always get letters as an asthmatic but never take up the offer).

Kittens have you tried Petite Fracas? That’s easier to love although it is rather sweet (Tonka bean maybe?) and I think you’re not so keen on sweetness in perfume(or maybe I’m getting you mixed up with someone else!)

GlovesAndHatsAndFloofyCats · 09/01/2018 12:12

You're all making the PP Cinnabar sound very attractive to me! Older than Youth Dew though?! Embalming fluid, perhaps Grin

Also wafting positive vibes for dental and lurgy affected Perfumistas - I feel very under the weather and haven't even made it out of bed yet Blush DS helpfully brought me seven cartons of OJ up when I asked him to get me a drink earlier Smile

Now, I know you guys will solve this for me! My Insolence sample arrived (how have I never tried this?!) and I love it, although it isn't Guerlain-y to me at all. However it reminds me of sweets from the 80s. (Not Parma Violets) DH says it's Cherry Lips but I don't think that's right. Similar though. They were small and strong tasting, possibly a half moon shape? Definitely small. Anybody know what the hell I am thinking of?

I really like this anyway. It reminds me slightly of Paris but I don't know why. Must look properly at the notes later.

Jilly Cooper sounds like the perfect reading for an afternoon in bed! I used to love Lace, and Scruples Blush So should branch out and investigate JC...
