Welcome to the long-running perfume thread! All are welcome - drop in to chat about old loves or new discoveries. Ask a perfume question and someone here will know the answer.

Be warned though, we are a bunch of terrible enablers and you may wish to put your credit card in the freezer before entering Wink

You and me both mrsreynolds Grin

mrsreynolds · 03/01/2018 15:48

I'm loving all the vintage obsession and opium wearers on this thread!
If I ever walk past anyone wearing either i always smile
Just gorgeous 😁

Judydreamsofhorses · 03/01/2018 17:26

SOTD is Mitsouko. Lunch with a friend and a wee wander round the shops, plus I had a call today bringing forward my endodontist appointment to tomorrow - an all-round good day.

floofy I am also interested in the style/perfume thing, although I couldn’t be arsed to trawl through those threads. (Interestingly (or not) people often think I am French with my Louise Brooks bob and red lipstick.) I get an idea that certain scents will sum up who I want to be, and they can occasionally go wrong. I am a big Bella Freud fan, and have owned full bottles of pretty much all her fragrances. None of them have really suited me, tbh. But god, I love the branding. On the flip side, I am also a huge Jane Birkin fan, and I just somehow knew I would love LDR.

MrsMacNally · 03/01/2018 19:39

SotD is Oxford. Have just got on to my Mastenbroek samples. This is lovely stuff! If anyone who purchased last year wants to offload some I'm up for a swap or a purchase! (Could let go of some Passage D'Enfer or I have the extreme mossy chypre from 4160s, The Enchanted Forest)....PM me if you're interested...

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 03/01/2018 19:40

SotD started off as "Babe Power" (what branding...!!!!) since it was a Frangrance Shop freebie sample I dig out of my handbag yesterday. Not as terrible as the name suggested but didn't last long so replaced with fakey Addict dupe underneath Guerlain Bergamot Calabria. Really enjoyed this combo - the "Addict" made the BC much richer and Winter suiting.

I don't think I have a distinctive style (except for at work which is much easier). I see lots of things and looks that I like and end up chopping and changing and not really pulling much off at all!! Perhaps why many scents appeal to me?

SYTTD exposes my style flighyness really well - I end up thinking about what i'd wear if we had another ceremony and can very easily go from "definitely lacey keyhole back" to "big floaty skirt" via "plain heavy material short prom style skirt to shoe off gorgeous heals" in one episode.

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 03/01/2018 19:43

Ooh cross posting MrsM but happy to be in reserve on the Oxford.

I really like it but would be happy to share a travelo or two's worth. Will sit on the sidelines for now though since I think there were a few of us who really didn't care for it who might prefer the swap!

Judydreamsofhorses · 03/01/2018 20:12

cheap I have a very distinctive style in reality, but in my SYTTD fantasies I switch between heavily beaded Gatsby style, or chic minimalist Audrey. However I very much like it when the southern belles go for absolutely massive ballgowns!

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 03/01/2018 20:15

Judy I love it when someone mentions Jackie O. I love that style but you just know that the Monte will go crazy and the bride to be won't be able to handle it Grin

Judydreamsofhorses · 03/01/2018 20:32

cheap I heart Monte, and Randy, so much. And Lori - did you see that standalone show they did on her “journey” (boak) through breast cancer and beyond? She came across so, so brilliantly, and I have since seen her gift or heavily discount dresses for brides who have come through cancer and are struggling with the budget for their chosen frock.

I am the least wedding-y person ever (we’re not married, partly because the thought of being A Bride terrifies me) but SYTTD is my very favourite.

explodingkittens · 04/01/2018 07:16

SOTD is Eau My Soul. I'm really starting to love this and my sample is now half-empty. But it's the most expensive 4160 and I simply can't justify a FB. Hey ho.

GlovesAndHatsAndFloofyCats · 04/01/2018 07:25

Haha, I secretly love SYTTD even though I pretend I'm just forced to watch it by my DC Grin Judy I am definitely not a bridal type (in fact I think you and I are quite similar in our style "likes") I just wore a off the peg silk day dress when I got married (DH wore jeans much to everyones' outrage!) and we are the most sickeningly happily married couple ever Blush I do love watching people try on huge meringue dresses whilst crying though!

After giving the "Style and Perfumes" matter some more thought, I have concluded I might be talking out of my arse hat. I think people perhaps like a wider variety and range of perfumes than we do with clothing. For example I like a 50s/60s style of clothing, like to match shoes and handbags, never wear trousers, always wear pearls but I don't seem to have the same constraints/strict rules when it comes to choosing perfumes. On paper I should stick to a classic signature scent (say) No. 5 for daytime and L'Arpege for night but in reality I'm a total scent whore and my choices are actually influenced by seasons rather than clothing choices.

I am interested though in how we link perfumes to certain styles/looks and like MrsMac says, how much of this is unconscious. Was it greenpolish (and where are you? Come back!) that linked to the list of stylish people's' favourite perfumes on an earlier thread?

My deep musings on this matter have also sadly ended in concluding that whilst I think I "channel" (hate that word) classic style gurus like Grace Kelly and Jacqueline Kennedy, I actually look like the Queen Shock Matching shoes and (ideally frame or Kelly) handbag, pearls, (fake) fur coats/collars, fitted dresses - oh dear. I think I shall leave further musings on this subject to people with much more taste than I have!

SOTD 4160 Rhubarb and custard- really digging this one now

Judydreamsofhorses · 04/01/2018 16:24

floofy I forget that you have seen my Instagram and know my style secrets! Although I am as far removed from dressing like the queen as is possible...!

SOTD is 19. I have been for lunch with my friend and now killing time until the endodontist consultation. This is weird for me as usually I come home and immediately get into “lounge wear” and my specs.

MrsPestilence · 04/01/2018 18:42

The Queen with a pink mohican , Floofy We are going to have to find an excuse to head up your way and experience this. Grin

SotD for three days running has been Bombfire a'la Pest. I rather like what it has grown up to be, now it has matured.

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 04/01/2018 19:38

I've given up any sort of cover Floof I'll watch most TLC rubbish. I think I made my colleagues rather nervous when I "educated" them on Sondra Celli... agree though Judy - Lori's lovely. She really looks out for her brides and it's not all about the commission.

SotD was Insolence - another department store spritz where Vol de Nuit was absent. How're folks getting on with the PP version? I really must order that violets box from Bloom. We're four days into January after all!!

Speaking of which, any more updates/ thoughts on the synchronised sampling? I quite fancy the 2017 Top Ten bloom one but am open to any suggestions!

mrsreynolds · 04/01/2018 19:38

Sotd dior addict again as I had an appt

Might wear twilight to bed

OCSockOrphanage · 04/01/2018 21:03

A bit late, but "Happy new year" to all denizens of Scentville.

It's been mostly Iris Cédre (the PP spray) and Roses 311 (also PP, version of Le Labo 31, I think) around here, with occasional dips into the sandalwoods (DVN/Tam Dao). I haven't been anywhere to sniff anything new since before Christmas.

The DVN, Tam Dao, Lux (sadly discontinued after Mona di Orio's death), Sahaara Noire (PP) and Vert d'Encens would be my discoveries from 2017. What will this year bring?

MrsMacNally · 04/01/2018 23:24

Floof - you're making me think of Vivienne Westwood? Grin.

Happy New Year OC!

Glad to hear you're enjoying Bombfire Pest. I received another of the Pink Friday 15mls for Xmas - and interestingly it opens a lot like A Bit of a Pickle. The heart and dry-down are quite different though.

Cheap - I'd happily run with that too. I think the trade-off is probably that the Bloom curation is more consistently interesting, but TPS boxes are a lot more generous, and even if not everything takes your fancy, there is a good chance you'll end up with larger samples of some things you like?

explodingkittens · 05/01/2018 08:31

Morning all. SOTD here is Naomi Goodsir's Cuir Velours. A slightly sweet, slightly smoky leather, it reminds me of something else that I can't quite put my finger on yet. The smoke is cigarettes more than pipe tobacco/woodsmoke and there's a slightly boozy undertone. It's a bit like an old man's pub where they really keep the woodwork well polished Grin

I'm going to book my Experimental Perfume Club workshop today - exciting! And I'd be up for either Bloom or TPS. I agree it could be a bit of a trade off between interesting/experimental and value-for-money. I'd be tempted to go for the Bloom one... but then again there's a Mastenbroek and a Floral Street in the latest TPS box, both of which I'd be interested to try (plus free chocolate), so...

BluebellGal · 05/01/2018 10:00

I’m quite tempted by the maestenbrook / floral street too. I’m off work this morning so going to give them both a call/ email and see what discount we can wangle. Maybe we can do them both!

BluebellGal · 05/01/2018 10:24

Looks like TPS and Bloom both closed. Will try again later or next week. Might send them an email later also. Will let you know how I get on

BluebellGal · 05/01/2018 11:00

Right I’ve emailed the Perfume Society and Bloom, expressing interest in the Velvet and best of 2017 sample boxes. I will let ya know what they say.

Off to the big smoke this afternoon for a meeting. SOTD Noix de Tubereuse by Miller Harris

JanetStWalker · 05/01/2018 11:40

Musc Rav today, not at all musky but very cinnamony sweet. Cosy not scary.

BluebellGal · 05/01/2018 13:25

Just come onto to do a spot of enabling Grin

Perfume society sale now on. You can get the Latest Launches box (the one with 2 x travel size Miller Harris inc Etui Noir) for £15 (£10 for VIPs). Absolute bargain- I may have to get another one!
