Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEW ADDITIONS since last thread:

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

AUGUST 2017: Sunscreen is pretty much non-negotiable at the moment (not that it’s ever not Wink), RL bumps have been met in the road for some, unfortunately. Grief sucks but we do our best to offer a bit of comfort even if it is just something as inane as skincare chat Smile. Some of us are lucky enough to be nerding out in French pharmacies whilst pretending to do that holiday thing, the Shelf Porn Off is still on…

I can't believe we're on thread 9 Shock

@EnidButton - love that - I'm always looking for bedside table type storage. I've got a cotton pad dispenser arriving tomorrow...

userallusedup · 16/08/2017 22:25

I have a load of those things Enid I love them. The bigger ones with drawers I got from Amazon but Primark do some that are fine for smaller brushes, lipsticks, eyeliners etc and are around £1. I want to get some more, though I really need to do a make up purge & should probably focus on less makeup rather than more storage Hmm

Pupsiecola · 16/08/2017 22:39

Enid that would be perfect for my new dressing table. I can't find that one on Amazon. Where did you buy it please?

EnidButton · 17/08/2017 00:23

Pupsie From Ryman's in store but I'm sure I've seen them on Amazon for cheaper...hang on...

Here you go www.amazon.co.uk/Osco-AD01-OSCO-Acrylic-Organiser/dp/B004W5OI98?tag=mumsnetforum-21

Search for Osco acrylic, they've all sorts on there including the little drawers and pen pot. They sell them in John Lewis too but at an inflated price.

EnidButton · 17/08/2017 00:26

Grim I nearly bought one of those a while back. Love some good storage. Grin

user I might get the bigger drawers too although not sure I need them really. I had a big declutter a couple of years ago but intend to do my make up etc again. I don't use half of it.

EnidButton · 17/08/2017 00:31

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00ZYTP7MS/ref=pd_aw_sim_229_of_56?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=03MWNXYW0RHXAJ1ZV6RJ&tag=mumsnetforum-21 This one looks pretty good too, although I'm not keen on the knobs/handles.

Stopping looking now before I buy more. Blush

Pupsiecola · 17/08/2017 10:41

Thank you so much!

EnidButton · 17/08/2017 22:24

You're welcome. Smile

I gave my make up brushes and blenders a really good wash earlier. Had a little sort out of the make up pieces I reach for very regularly and arranged them in the desk organiser. I put the ones I don't use as often in the drawer under my dressing table. Most used lipsticks are in the mini drawers. Although I'm mainly using the Dior Lipglow atm, looking forward to getting the darker plums and reds back out as the night's draw in. (Forgot I have one that smells like cinnamon.) I'm really ready for it to be Autumn. This Summer has been...hard work.

Started using the Kiehl's micro peel serum again after a big gap.

EnidButton · 17/08/2017 22:26

Out of curiosity, how often do you all cleaning your make up bushes etc? I aim for once a fortnight but sometimes it can be once a month if I've not used them every day.

And sure it's been discussed before but as my memory is shit, what do you all use to clean them? I use hibi scrub atm.

Ollivander84 · 17/08/2017 22:27

I do a quick swirl with paper towels or baby wipes between colours. Deep clean maybe every two weeks using dr Bronner at the minute but also any left over shampoo works

Ollivander84 · 17/08/2017 22:28

My wish list is getting too long Blush

EnidButton · 17/08/2017 22:40

I tend to use the same colours so no swirling really needed. Makes sense you do though as you have so many lovely eyeshadows.

Do you have Pinterest? I like pinning 'wants' to a board on there. Saves filling up my screenshots album on my phone. A list is a good idea actually.

Ollivander84 · 17/08/2017 22:52

I dare not sign up Grin I stick with the notes app!

Great storage ideas there! Think I will get the one with drawers.

Still loving Avene anti ageing SPF and the calming moisturiser. Will definitely repurchase along with the cleanser as an alternative to LRP.

My daughters got me The Heat Palette from Urban decay and when I actually get time to use it, I have been impressed by it. The colours suit my blue eyes. DD1 is doing a makeup course atm and can't wait for free makeovers!

JDSTER · 18/08/2017 14:01

Can someone remind me which Avene cleanser is the good one with the coco whatsit ingredient?

mintmagnummm · 18/08/2017 18:34

I'm liking the avene anti ageing spf 50 too! And just to let u know their extremely gentle cleanser has been discontinued

Skinfulnappies46 · 18/08/2017 22:08

What??? No way Mint !! I am using it at the minute and prefer it to LRP.is there a replacement from Avene?

mintmagnummm · 19/08/2017 06:43

They have brought out new cleansers but nothing seems suitable as a replacement for that one as they contain fragrance!!....I could be wrong but I tried looking for it and it doesn't come up when I put in extremely gentle cleanser and I'm sure I read somewhere about it being discontinued. I never liked the lrp one it irritated my skin, I swear by dermalogica ultracalming cleanser I always go back to this and have been using for over 10 years!

mintmagnummm · 19/08/2017 09:52

Bo or anyone else that can help, should I continue using my avene spf 50 on my face 365 days a year even in winter? If I do that will it be less effective in the hot sun (as in my skin will become immune to it?)

yongnian · 19/08/2017 11:10

mint I use spf 50 all year round...I don't think skin becomes immune to it...it's a topical application, which is why it needs reapplying every few hours...I think it forms a physical barrier, so it stays effective, rather than skin building up a tolerance....?
That's just my thoughts on it....Someone else might have a better more scientific explanation though!

mintmagnummm · 19/08/2017 11:33

Thanks Yong. What benefits does it offer during winter?

yongnian · 19/08/2017 13:05

mint I think the deal is that UV rays don't just happen when it's sunny...it's from light in general, which is why bo always says 'yes wear it even if you are indoors' - I always think of those stately home type places that keep their delicate tapestries, silks and paintings etc in low light levels...because the colours etc will still fade over time due to UV exposure from the light. And as SPF protection is just about the only thing that really works to age-proof your skin, and because it is exposed to light all the time, I think that's why the year-round emphasis. (Unless you live in a cave).
Repeated disclaimer: non-scientific, personal and anecdotal explanation!

mintmagnummm · 19/08/2017 15:39

Thank you for that Yong it makes sense.

JDSTER · 19/08/2017 15:47

mint. I can't find any of that Avene cleanser out here on holiday and all the pharmacies stick lots of Avene, LRP etc. yong has responded to your query about year long spf usage. UV which causes long term skin damage not related to sun but I'd also refer you back to Bo's info sheet on daily sunscreen on first page of this thread.
