Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEW ADDITIONS since last thread:

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

AUGUST 2017: Sunscreen is pretty much non-negotiable at the moment (not that it’s ever not Wink), RL bumps have been met in the road for some, unfortunately. Grief sucks but we do our best to offer a bit of comfort even if it is just something as inane as skincare chat Smile. Some of us are lucky enough to be nerding out in French pharmacies whilst pretending to do that holiday thing, the Shelf Porn Off is still on…

I can't believe we're on thread 9 Shock

Thanks, i know we are all to critical of ourselves. I think its more my family im going with that in ashamed to let them see me without make up! Just been and bought a rehydration mask, as my skin does feel tight today. Also what do you think of oil to rehydrate?
Thank you all again, its good to know that there is hopefully light at the end of the tunnel! ❤

EnidButton · 12/08/2017 18:15

it is robbing you of joy when you fatalistically measure the 'worst' of yourself against the 'best' of someone else.

🙌🏻 I needed that pep talk too. Flowers

I've bought some Elemis Milk Bath which I haven't had for ages. Felt like I needed something soothing and gentle. Wish I'd got the papaya mask now too so might order that as well. Not entirely sure it does loads but it's one of the few masks that doesn't cause me break outs and it feels nice to use. Going to try and have a bath with the milk bath later, maybe put some Elasticizer on. (Ignoring my facial skin. Terrible eating and sleeping habits and crying over the last week have done a number. It's been a week now though so have to pull myself out of it or I'll make myself ill.)

Also ordered more Lush Big shampoo and the American Cream conditioner as well as a micro dermabrasion body exfoliator that Sanctuary Spa used to do. Had to buy from Amazon. Bit of a fuck it purchase but I do remember it being excellent for my thighs and my bum.

So my short term mission is to get back to eating properly and regularly. And to find a bloody hair salon.

Pupsiecola · 13/08/2017 09:08

The Cerave has 4% nia in apparently. Bo's sheet says separate nia not required if moisturiser has 4-5% nia in. So once my nia has run out I think I'll get the Cerave and reduce number of products.

Went through all the family toiletries and medicine box last night. It was all in different places from the move, but it's all now sorted :-)

Pupsiecola · 13/08/2017 09:59

PS I just ordered a dressing table Grin

EnidButton · 13/08/2017 14:18

Ooh nice! What's it like? 👃🏻

Pupsiecola · 13/08/2017 16:07

It's just a little one. I'm quite minimalist really and don't like a lot of clutter. We have a vaulted ceiling in our bedroom, and a couple of oak beams. I think this will be perfect.

Dressing Table

EnidButton · 13/08/2017 16:17

I really like that!

Pupsiecola · 13/08/2017 16:24

Thanks Enid! I might have a little cushion made out of the same fabric we're having our blinds made from :-) It'll mostly be for drying my hair. I've dried it standing up for years, but it takes a good 15 minutes really, so I'm looking forward to sitting down!

Tantpoke · 13/08/2017 21:50

So of course here I am in sunny Ibiza having packed just about everything I need for skincare except, duh I actually totally forgot any moisturiser, what a wally !!!

I'm having to make do with a sample size of Lancôme genefique serum, TO silicone primer and Nuxe body oil, which tbh so far is ok, time will only tell.

Tantpoke · 13/08/2017 21:54

As for spf, Riemann P20 has been amazing none of us have burnt at all but still tanned a bit and as I have no moisturiser I'm using it on my face as it's oily.

BagelGoesWalking · 14/08/2017 11:26

Hope everyone is well today. Trying to cram all my skin bits & pieces into small bottles as only taking hand luggage for a week in France.

Otherside I was thinking about you last night while watching Gothamista's videos (far too late)! I know you're giving your skin a rest, but I was wondering if it might benefit from loads of hydration. Some good ones are in this The HADA LABO GOKUJYUN HYALURONIC ACID Solution and/or LOTION has been recommended a few times by ppl on an FB Ordinary group and you can get it from Amazon.

userallusedup · 14/08/2017 18:55

Hi all, sorry for long absence have had a crazy summer with work travel and a couple of holidays visiting friends and family.

Been doing a lot of flights with hand luggage only so routine has taken a hit as couldn't fit skin care plus makeup & hair stuff in the silly little plastic bag, so it's been cleanse moisturise and sunscreen only! Skin doesn't seem much the worse for wear (no major breakouts or spots) but it looks a bit dull and I've noticed from holiday pics that I'm getting very saggy and baggy round my eyes and jowls which makes me look really old and miserable Sad though outside of cosmetic procedures (which I'm looking into) I don't think there is much that I can do about sagging.

But I'm trying to get back into a proper skincare routine again as well & have ordered the new 30% Vit c from TO.

I also think I need a dedicated neck/chest moisturiser as my skin there is much drier and more sensitive than on my face & I can't use actives. Open to suggestions if anyone has any recommendations Smile

I haven't read back fully (will do now) but I'm so sorry to hear about your dog Enid Flowers

Hope everyone is well and is enjoying/has enjoyed their summer & holidays Smile

EnidButton · 14/08/2017 19:56

Thank you user Flowers I hope you've been having a good time on your holidays. 🍦

yongnian · 15/08/2017 10:09

Oo fell off the thread. bo my hydrabio says Brume, too. Don't know if I would use it like I use a water spray whilst hot though.
tantpoke - good excuse for an interesting purchase abroad possibly....?? Good to hear the review on Riemann.

yongnian · 15/08/2017 10:14

Posted too soon,
Welcome back user. I tend to use up whatever body lotion I have hanging about for décolletage and neck, though I do moisturise that area twice a day when doing face and sweep it upwards, I also cleanse the area as per my routine and use serum where needed. So basically, treat it like an extension of my face routine. Skin there is not dry and sensitive there like yours though. Am currently using Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentrate, as I have no other use for it currently. I think it's the cleansing and inadvertent massage which have helped the skin the most.

Othersideof40 · 15/08/2017 10:21

Thanks Bagelgoeswalking i will look into them.

Im wondering if i could be intollerant to something, whether this can make pores go bigger? But thinking back about a year, ive had a burning tongue, bloated and also spots in my hair line, all starting up at the same time.

JDSTER · 15/08/2017 12:20

Well, I'm on holiday in about 28 degrees with blazing sun. I'm in the shade of course- apart from when I was doing aqua bike but I had a cap, glasses and rash top on and spf 50 of course! It always amazes me how some people just bake themselves in the blazing sun. Some amazing dark tans here aka sun damage Grin. Local pharmacy not that exciting. Plenty of LRP and Avene but nothing that's caught my eye. I'm enjoying TO 30% Vit C by the way. The texture is very dry and primer like, which is great for my oily/combination skin. The silicone does a good job of temporarily filling in pores

userallusedup · 15/08/2017 18:41

Where are you JDSTER? I used to be one of those bakers - though I didn't sunbathe much as found it boring but never used SPF or covered up and would always have a tan to 'show off'.

Thanks for the Vit c review, looking forward to getting mine now.

yongnian that's a good idea about using up body stuff on my neck and chest, I have oily tough as old boots non-sensitive skin on my face so the products I use there are not moisturising enough or too irritating (actives) to take down beyond my jaw line.

JDSTER · 15/08/2017 21:50

In Lanzarote user. Even if I had wanted to show off a tan it would never happen as I'm too fair. Fake all the way for me! I did notice a lot of sunburnt people at dinner tonight.

Found what looks like a decent shopping area tonight so shall explore another time.

I'm the same with an oily face and needing more moisture on my neck. I often use samples of moisturisers e.g freebie elemis pro collagen that came with a magazine and I'm using up a sanctuary spa oil on my neck at the moment.

Tantpoke · 15/08/2017 22:45

Yes yong you're right I'll check out the shops if I can tomorrow on my way to and from the hippy market although my skin is ok so far but it's early days.

I've been in the shade all day except when in the pool so I'm feeling a bit tender of shoulder. I definitely have pretty much the whitest legs here as proven during aqua yoga. I really should get a fake spray tan next time I go away.

I'm loving my kaftans even though I only swoosh around in them in our rooms. My trusty M&S beach shirt however can not be beaten as a beach cover up.

This nuxe huile oil is a complete life saver at the moment, thank you M&S and your fab advent calendar for bringing it to my attention.

wiltingfast · 16/08/2017 10:37

just marking place to catch up later... been mad busy with getting ready for school etc, no energy for mumsnetting Shock

Ollivander84 · 16/08/2017 14:20

I've got some body shop samples to try so if any are decent I will report back! The list is
Aqua boost vit e sorbet
Matcha tea mask
Skin defense essence SPF 50
Drops of youth fresh emulsion SPF 20
Hawaiian kukui cream

EnidButton · 16/08/2017 17:03

Other a burning sensation in the tongue can be a symptom of vitamin deficiency. I think it's B12 but not 100% sure. If you've been feeling generally run down, a check of vitamin etc levels at the GP might be something you want to consider.

EnidButton · 16/08/2017 17:12

Right so that Magnum I just ate is the last of the sugar loaded food that I'm eating for the next few weeks. The wheat and sugar intake is really showing on my face. There's birthday cake left but DH can finish that off.

I've ordered the Elemis papaya face mask. Looking at the ingredients it doesn't look that spectacular but I remember really liking it and it was comforting to use. If that makes sense. They emailed a £10 off birthday code so taking advantage.

Also finally getting round to ordering both the NYX and MUFE face powders because the Lancôme one I bought is utterly rubbish. Lasts about half an hour on the skin and somehow makes me feel oilier. It's just an odd powder imo. Plus expensive and has terrible packaging. Do not recommend at all. It's the Poudre Majeur Excellence and bizarrely has rave reviews. Maybe I just have higher standards odd skin. 😁

Painted my nails a lovely cheerful red two days ago. Still chip free. Essie Forever Yummy.

EnidButton · 16/08/2017 17:15

Oh and finally bought more acrylic make up storage for on top of my dressing table. A set of mini drawers which fit Chanel lipsticks perfectly, a pen pot for brushes and another general organiser (pic) for everything else that I use daily. The little drawers are very cute.

(Just call me Enid TriplePost Button Blush)
