Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEW ADDITIONS since last thread:

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

AUGUST 2017: Sunscreen is pretty much non-negotiable at the moment (not that it’s ever not Wink), RL bumps have been met in the road for some, unfortunately. Grief sucks but we do our best to offer a bit of comfort even if it is just something as inane as skincare chat Smile. Some of us are lucky enough to be nerding out in French pharmacies whilst pretending to do that holiday thing, the Shelf Porn Off is still on…

I can't believe we're on thread 9 Shock

Well done Olli, are you now in that 'I'll never paint again!' mode, until you're looking at another wall and thinking, 'Well maybe...' Grin

Very welcome to burst in Renarde, especially when armed with such helpful information!

mint, If HA doesn't work for you then look at other humectants like Glycerin, Aloe, or Honey. The Kiehl's Ultra Facial Toner is pretty much all glycerin and squalane. It has a teeny tiny bit of HA very far down the list far beyond the preservatives along with a few oils, why they're there I have no clue. They're unlikely to do anything in such minute amounts but it should be easy enough to get a sample for and they also sell a travel size.

I've never understood the UD palette appeal myself (had a few different ones applied, the shadow disappeared just as quickly with primer as other brands). Realistically I wouldn't use more than 2 or 3 shades from a palette so it never added up for me, but I do like the look and have earmarked the Ultimate Basics Palette which is all matte as I'd get much more use out of those.

Yes Grin everyone said I was mad for picking this colour but it looks great against this unit

Hello all! I've been MIA with summer hol stuff and an amaaaaazing festival I was at last weekend :) Just saying hi and will go and read the stuff I've missed.....

One question for Olli - Colored Raine Queen of Hearts - I've wanted it for ages and it's sat in my cart.... have you tried it? Reviews are great, colours are "me" but it's spendy...

And the wall's a lovely colour - looks perfect to me!

mintmagnummm · 01/09/2017 12:02

Thanks bo that kiehls toner was on my mind already actually, there's quite a few negative reviews which puts me off though?! Have you tried it yourself?
Yeah that's the reason I haven't got any palettes, when I wear eyeshadow I usually only like one colour on my lid, 2 at most but I like the thought of having lots of colours 'just incase' Grin

botemp · 01/09/2017 12:22

Yes, I used it as a makeshift light moisturiser in the summer when it was bleeding hot. As a traditional 'toner' I suppose it'd be pretty shit as it has no astringent or cleansing qualities but if you just pat a small amount on to your face (it's quite watery) like you would a Japanese toner it works great as a hydrating toner. I do find it expensive for what it is, but it does get the job done. Bioderma has something similar but I'm almost 100% sure it's fragranced.

Welcome back Tsmummy08!

Forgot to mention, my Deciem order shipped yesterday so probably will get it on Monday so all the new stuff genuinely appears to be in stock without waiting lists. It's like I'm living in the twilight zone Grin

mintmagnummm · 01/09/2017 12:51

Thanks bo I'll check it out, would you pour some into hands then apply or still use a cotton pad?

Ollivander84 · 01/09/2017 13:07

Ts- I haven't tried it, sorry!

Tantpoke · 01/09/2017 14:20

Enid I read somewhere that because your hair can get a build of urm oil in areas you can use washing up liquid to remove it Hmm so in fact I'm going to try that right now on the crown of my head 5cm in diameter.

mint what colour are your eyes? If green like mine then Mac single eyeshadow in Corduroy is lovely despite all my palettes this is my go to.

Tsmummy08 · 01/09/2017 14:20

Thanks for the link, I did it Blush

Bit of a treat, but I'm going to have to learn how to use those eyelid tape things so my eyeshadow can be seen instead of hiding under flaps of skin!

yongnian · 01/09/2017 14:38

mint I've got UD Naked 3. Nice colours, though too many of them are sparkly at my vast advanced eyelid-age. But you've just reminded me to dig it out, so thanks!
enid and tant and anyone else who is dealing with over-production on their scalp...my top tip is to massage a small quantity of shampoo before wetting the hair. This enables the shampoo to make an emulsion with the scalp's oils more effectively before you add water, (which stops an emulsion forming as well). Then just shampoo as you would normally. The emulsion helps to really strip the oils off the hair shafts.
Will be posting my September review later. I am childishly and rather sadly, always quite excited about this, even though I think it's more for writer's pleasure rather than reader!!
Olli paint looks great. Am biased as my bathroom is that colour, as well as some freestanding wooden kitchen furniture I have. I have to be careful not to pick grey for absolutely everything, i love it. Calming and good for showing other colours/stuff off, as your photo demonstrates!

EnidButton · 01/09/2017 16:16

Tant An elderly neighbour years ago, used to use washing up liquid! She had lovely soft white hair. Like a cloud. Grin Think I tried it back then and it wasn't good. Squeaky tangled hair. Yong I'll try that tip tonight thank you. My roots aren't massively over oily, just the typical oily roots dry ends thing. I like a clarifying shampoo because it means I can go a day longer between washes and save some energy. I like reading end of month summaries/reviews. Smile None of my own this month I don't think.

mintmagnummm · 01/09/2017 16:17

Tant my eyes are a grey/green

Yong thanks, I think I'm gonna give the palette a miss, I have a feeling I wouldn't use lots of them and so would regret it.

userallusedup · 01/09/2017 17:52

I've got a couple of small UD palettes that I love but not the naked ones, the colours in them have never appealed to me that much as 'warmer' brown shades don't look good on me. The coloured raine palette is gorgeous but wouldn't suit me at all.

Talking of palettes, my Tarte Make Believe one has arrived from QVC. I don't love it as much as I thought I would Sad the blues and purples look lovely and deep and vibrant but are very shimmery and quite pale once applied, think it's aimed at younger people going for the mermaid-y type look. I'll have a play with it and do some mix and match with other palettes but it might well get returned.

I've been using TO ret 1% every third night and my skin is peely again. My cicaplast peely skin balm has arrived as well though so hoping that will sort it out.

Olli the paint looks gorgeous, I love it ❤️

Ollivander84 · 01/09/2017 17:55

I'm eyeing up the shiseido synchro skin luminizing foundation Blush

yongnian · 01/09/2017 18:38

Oh dear olli that could prove to be an expensive habit.....Grin

EnidButton · 01/09/2017 19:49

Damnit I forgot to do the shampoo trick. I've also shaved my shins with what I know realise was a blunt-ish razor. 😩 The burrrrn! Anyone know how to soothe it?

Moisturiser stings like hell but it's dry and there's a red prickly rash. Very attractive. No shaved legs for me for the next two weeks until they recover.

EnidButton · 01/09/2017 19:50

*now realise

yongnian · 01/09/2017 20:06

Eek enid what about cicaplast? Or aloe Vera gel if you have....or if you have lavender essential oil, mix a few drops with any base oil and rub on....or if you have any non-fragranced aftersun they usually have allantoin which is soothing....Will have a further think...any kind of 'bite or sting' cream will also help...

userallusedup · 01/09/2017 20:06

Dare I suggest cicaplast Enid Grin

botemp · 01/09/2017 20:12

Serozinc works well to tackle razor burn in the immediate aftermath, Enid. Other thermal sprays work well too.

OP posts:
userallusedup · 01/09/2017 20:12

Great minds yongnian Grin

Enid definitely give the cicaplast a try, but any unscented sensitive skin type moisturiser should help.

Pupsiecola · 01/09/2017 21:05

Love my teeny dressing table. First one since I left home at 22. Organised my skincare too and got everything where I want it. Is anyone doing Empties?

AUGUST EMPTIES, TRIALS, AND PLANNED PURCHASES

EMPTIES:

LRP Toleriane cleansing milk - will RP

EH cleansing balm - will not RP at this point. Very happy with Clinique

TTDO and the LRP

Hand Chemistry hand cream - will RP

NeoStrata Smooth Surface Daily Peel Pads - taken me about 10 months to get through these. I like them but I probably won't RP as I'm happy using P50 and PC Skin Perfecting.

Hydrablo Creme - RP'd before the old one finished. My skin loves this, especially with a drop or two of Dr Troub Niaten Serum (nia)

The Ordinary Vit C - the original one. Haven't RP'd as tried the new one instead.

PRODUCTS ON TRIAL:

CeraVe Facial Moisturising Lotion (PM) - really like this so far

NIOD Hylamide - really like this too (the first HA I have seen the point of)

The Ordinary Vitamin C - the new one. Feels more stingy and disappears so quickly I'm not quite sure if I've got it on. The jury is out.

Ultrasun Face 50+ - bought this for running and really like it so far

Aveda Curly Curl Enhancer - bought this after watching a Trinny video. I am trying to embrace the natural wave more. Seems good so far.

PLANNED PURCHASES:

None at present. Trying to scale back number of products but also aware of impending change of seasons. Also keen to hear Bo's thoughts on DECIEM purchases.

SPECIAL MENTION

Nothing in particular.

miffy2 · 01/09/2017 21:45

Tsmummy08 I pre-ordered the Coloured Raine palette over the summer because I was obsessing over it for ages when it was originally launched and sold out. Anyway it came about a week ago. The colours are divine. very rich and pigmented. I am a firm taupe-lover when it comes to shadow, but since buying Modern Renaissance a year ago I have been trying to expand my shadow horizons a bit. I have only used it a couple of times so far and need to watch more tutorials first but it is a beauty of a palette.

I will do my empties etc, in the next day or so.
