3....have you tried EL youth dew?
I find that a dark oriental...

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 22/08/2017 23:13

I'm off to Fenwicks next week (to totally mortify dd, who I drag round all the high end stalls and talk perfume with no intention of buying anything) Anyone in Newcastle the Frederic Malle concession is run by the most exquisite young man, he is really sweet (made this fat old bird feel special). Speaking of my beloved offspring, I blind bought her the latest Taylor Swift flanker. Mainly to wean her off the vanilla cupcakey thing she wears. She loves it- I took the opportunity to introduce the phrase "pink minger" to her.
For fun-if you had to choose a scent that represents each season-what would it be? I think Spring woukd be MMM Untitled, summer-70s Fidgi, Autumn def Mitsouko and winter...mmm, tough. Weirdly enough, vintage Tweed, as it reminds me of my dm at Christmas, or Sublime, though it's heavy with tuberose.

GreenPolishToGo · 23/08/2017 00:25

Just one to represent each season OhWhat! Now that is hard. Hmm... OK, here goes:

Spring - vintage (Cellier formulation) Vent Vert.
Summer - 4160 Tuesdays What I Did On My Holidays.
Autumn - Hypnotic Poison.
Winter - vintage Opium.

My DD is now using the phrase "pink minger". Of Hugo Boss Scent for Her only the other day. And she was bang on the money. It really was rather nasty.

34AQuid which pricey, vanilla-y Guerlain thingummy have you fallen in love with then? And speaking of vanilla, boozy and dark have you sniffed Le Couvent des Minimes Eau des Missions, which is sumptuous and bargainous - thank you LesIncompetents for recommending it on an earlier thread.

Puppylucky · 23/08/2017 04:17

Huzzah - better news on the dupes front. I finally got hold of Jacomo Secrets and it really is a good stand in for (my memories of) Chanel 19. Think it was recommended on this thread so thanks for that !

Knope2020 · 23/08/2017 07:51

Hmmmm....

Spring: sun moon stars/diamonds and rubies
Summer: valentino poudree/nightmusk
Autumn: knowing/mitsuoko
Winter:knowing/addict

Sorry can't choose just one!

Ok....your best perfumes for day ☀and night🌙?

Do any of you have a special Xmas perfume??

Knope2020 · 23/08/2017 07:52

Green...have you tried addict??
I think you'd love it given your hypnotic poison love

Knope2020 · 23/08/2017 09:18

Oooh my addict has arrived!!!
Whoo hoo

34AQuid · 23/08/2017 11:02

Morning.

Knope - I've never so much as snuffed Youth Dew, but it seems to have a hardcore following on perfume review websites. What's it like?

Green - the Guerlain thingummy is Spirituese Double Vanille. I've never even tried it, but I'm having a major grown-up vanilla moment since I discovered Addict + I've had a lot of success with Guerlain = sounds like a winner. Definitely can't afford it right now, though, so will search out Le Couvent des Minimes Eau des Missions. Thank you!

'Pink minger' is a genius phrase. Thank you for introducing it in to my vocabulary Grin.

34AQuid · 23/08/2017 11:03

Sniffed = snuffed

34AQuid · 23/08/2017 11:07

The season thing is tough...and I'm fickle...but my answer (today!) is:

Spring - 4160T Tokyo Spring Blossom
Summer - Sisley Izia
Autumn - Addict
Winter - 4160 Doe in the Snow

Re: Christmas. I've never thought of wearing a particular perfume, as this year is when my obsession has really taken off...but I fancy something a bit spicy, maybe gourmand? Something with vanilla, coffee, booze notes...

Knope2020 · 23/08/2017 11:10

Ooooh it's lush :) it's just got a rubbish name!
It's like an incensey, spicy, balsamic, warm glass of Coca Cola! There is vanilla in there too.
😂
Seriously, it's lovely. I don't wear it because
a) my mum wears it (also why I won't wear opium even though I love it)
b) it's got clove in it somewhere I'm sure....or something similar to clove and I can't bear that on my skin (I'm the same with almond/marzipan scents) Smells incredible on others though
My mum is very heavy handed with perfume...she spoils the scent by wearing far too much of it
The 80s were a fun time in our house...
Mum wore opium
I wore obsession
My sister wore poison/Lou Lou
😖
My poor dad! 😂

GreenPolishToGo · 23/08/2017 12:09

Oh that vanilla-y Guerlain thingummy, 34AQuid! Yep, I see what you mean - it is most definitely not cheap and cheerful. I've never smelt it myself but a lot of reviews do suggest Eau des Missions as a very good alternative.

Knope' that's a good description of Youth Dew. My DCs thought it was lovely when I wore it. The trouble is it was so nearly ubiquitous when I was young that practically everyone around my age sniffs it and says it reminds them of their mother or grandmother, or just any random old lady. It needs an audience with no olfactory baggage. Vintage is supposed to be better. I've read that Estée Lauder counters were besieged with furious women of a certain age when Youth Dew was reformulated a few years ago.

And yes I do like Addict a lot. DD has an Ebay bargain which smells gorgeous and I do hunt intermittently for one of my own. No luck yet but I haven't been stalking that seriously. You've reminded me to step it up.

For a Christmas scent I think it has to be 4160 Tuesdays Captured by Candlelight, which is described as "the scent of Christmas pudding alight with blue brandy flames, served in an oak panelled dining room, lit with candles." Yum.

Knope2020 · 23/08/2017 12:24

I'm off to douse myself in addict

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 23/08/2017 13:07

I think scents for seasons is something I need to work on. Although I'm not convinced seasons exist anymore. August has certainly been pretty pants...

Talking of Christmas scents though... Does anyone know if there might be some good scenty advent calendars this year? Don't fancy a JM one to be honest but wondered if there might be some other goodies out there.

Captured by Candlelight sounds wonderful!

Knope2020 · 23/08/2017 13:13

Mmmmmm
Vanillary goodness......

GreenPolishToGo · 23/08/2017 13:44

Cheap I had the 4160 Tuesdays Advent calendar of samples last year and it was delightful. As well as 24 samples, it had a pretty handkerchief and a copy of Four Fragrant Mysteries; Sarah Mac's collection of Golden Age style crime stories based on four of her perfumes. If it's available again this year I would recommend pouncing on it. Though I suppose it did give me a serious 4160s habit...Grin

Then there are these. DD had the L'Occitane one last year and loved it. It was quite heavy on hand creams but she said they were very good ones and she does get through a lot of them.

Might go and pinch some of DD's Addict now.

Knope2020 · 23/08/2017 16:10

God id love a perfume advent calendar!

explodingkittens · 23/08/2017 17:52

I'm a huge Youth Dew fan. I love it. Sadly dp and ds aren't so enamoured and it's easy to get heavy-handed with it, but imo it's a fabulous scent.

Talking of old-lady scents though, I think I might be developing a bit of a thing for 'em - but possibly the kind of old ladies who drink gin, smoke too much and wear way too much lipstick Grin Am currently sporting 24 Faubourg on my right wrist and Vol De Nuit on my left. The Faubourg is incredibly glamorous, makes me feel as if I should be swathed in furs. The Vol De Nuit is unwashed pants, basically. I love them both but (a bit like the L'Air De Rien) am not completely sure I can live up to the filthy, glamorous promises of either!

Knope2020 · 23/08/2017 17:53

I felt a bit like that with POAL

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 23/08/2017 17:56

Me too, I'm at the age where I don't actually need anything for Christmas, or birthdays, but what I want is nice perfume, fountain pens, scarves and handbags. But that would suit me.
Anyway I got EL foundation today as there was an offer on, so for my other thing I needed to get I got the smallest bottle of youth dew I could. And as I work with teens they will be my audience with no memory of it. I liked Private Collection at first, but three hours later there is nothing there apart from a light watery echo.

Knope2020 · 23/08/2017 18:22

Good choice what! Did you try knowing too?

YouAndYourFloofyCatNose · 23/08/2017 19:20

You definitely want to share the Knowing love knope Grin

Oh what you have listed my all time favourite things in your post (plus books of course!) Smile

I have plans to make advent calendars for a few very good friends, using perfume samples. It's giving me a lot of pleasure to plan them :) Christmas Eve is going to be an Opium sample, naturally.

SOTD is PP Addict, I fear it is irritating my skin though Hmm We have results day tomorrow for one DC so I need something calming. I'm a bit nervous

Wishing good luck to any Junior Perfumistas waiting on results!

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 23/08/2017 19:24

Oh wow what a dangerous link Green! A fizzy wine advent calendar?! A 4160 Tuesdays one would be fab though. Will be crossing fingers and keeping eyes peeled...

SOTD was Nina Ricci Luna. Had a quick spray in the car this morning and it started of a bit like Ghost Deep Night (or my 10 year old memories of it...) before almost instantly developing a note a bit like Angel. Resprayed when I got to the office and nothing like either! My car is obviously doing strange things... All in all though Luna was inoffensive but I wouldn't spend any money on it.

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 23/08/2017 19:31

What a lovely idea Floof What are you putting the samples in?

Best of luck for tomorrow. I hope it's all gone well

Judydreamsofhorses · 23/08/2017 20:13

SOTD is MH L'Air de Rien. I am too slutty to have seasonal perfumes, plus we basically get winter/July here, but my summer scent is definitely Heeley Sel Marin, autumn and winter LDR and Mitsouko, and Chanel 19 all year round.
