Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. If you wish join us on this thread I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

MAY/JUNE 2017: It’s summer and some of us are hourglasses (and otherwise beautifully shaped) that desperately need to bitch and moan about the severe lack of clothes available to us. Also, some of us are recovering from a ‘fine’ butchering to our hair. Don’t ask. Some of us suffer from all of the above. At least the weather is good, wear sunscreen.

I can never get on with Asos, Enid. Sites like that and Zalando just have too much choice and I can never find something. I actually found a nice dress from Filippa K that really did look great on my body by simply having a nipped waist in the back but I'm uhming ahing over the price and if it weren't such a shitty season of clothing options if I'd be spending that kind of money on something so simple. Filippa K things do last forever with me though. I also have a dress almost identical to it in navy blue (the other two colours didn't suit me) in a heavier weight fabric with one differentiating detail that I'm having altered to fit again so it's kind of doubling up. Thinking of waiting out a sale offer. I'm also tempted to order a few things from Promod as they appear to still recognise people have a waist but may just hold out until I head to Paris in July. Between Yongnian and I it's going to be shelf porn galore on here Grin

Those SPF links were mostly for body use, though you could use them on the face, just may not be so pleasant, Pupsie. The ones with Avo in it may also give you some more choice. There are a few good Japanese ones too but they're always on the pricier end of the scale. Yes, I consider the Neostrata a cooler weather SPF, it specifically says not to use on the beach or near the water IIRC, so fine if you're unlikely to break out in a sweat on the daily but more difficult in hotter humid weather.

Yeah, I don't think I'm having an overheating issue, Enid. I always carry a water spray just in case but this feels different. I had a dizzy spell in the supermarket yesterday that thankfully passed quickly and had some severe nausea most of the evening. I've had this before and I'm bang on ovulation so I'm thinking it's just that. Will see my specialist in around two weeks time so if it persists I'll know who to complain to. Now, no more worrying about me

otyt Grin we live to serve slippery things here after all Grin I can't help but snicker everytime I translate Japanese descriptions that continuously go on about 'horny layers'. No, that sunscreen doesn't state outright that it's waterproof but simply to top up after water exposure. I expect it will handle sweat and a bit of water too but it will wear away. I can contact them and ask but I doubt it'll be in stock back in time before your holidays.

I was going to put this up tomorrow but will be mostly mobile so doing it now since everyone is already putting them up. This is just a simple format for everyone to use, but it's a guide really no need to adhere to it to the letter Smile.

Okkkkk so I knew sharing how well behaved my skin had been would backfire on me. Less than a week later and my face is disgusting, my foundation free days are clearly over! I went to bed last night with clear skin, woke up with a few little spots on the surface and every time I look in the mirror throughout the day it's getting worse and it itches ShockConfused SadI've attached a pic, I mean wtf???

It looks and feels like I've reacted to something. I don't get little surface spots like this usually but Totally confused as to what it could be as I've not changed the products I've used.

I'm using AM: TO HA, TO Vit C, Face theory moisturiser, sheisho spf

PM: Bodyshop Camomile balm, PC Clear cleanser, PC BHA (2 x a week), TO Retinol 2%, FT moisturiser again

The only thing I can think that's changed is my fabric conditioner and the bed was changed 2 nights ago. Has anyone had something like this caused by laundry products before?

So I'm currently hiding out in my office hiding my spotty face but I'm out with friends straight from work and not going home. I need to go to boots and pick up a foundation that will cover the horribleness. Any suggestions? olli you are a make up guru maybe you'll be able to rec a super coverage foundation sold in a medium sized boots Grin

olderthanyouthink · 31/05/2017 14:33

bo I think it's in stock, I can go through to the checkout with the big bottle (I don't understand the address bit at all).
Shipping is 8,32€. Looks like next day shipping in NL but no idea what international is.

olderthanyouthink · 31/05/2017 14:33

Actually I should probably get smaller bottles as I'm going to have to drag a bottle around with me

Ollivander84 · 31/05/2017 14:45

Foundation - revlon colour stay or l'oreal infallible. Failing that ask for a sample of Estée Lauder double wear Wink

BaliBound · 31/05/2017 16:03

No estee at this boots Olli or I'd be all over that. I knew you'd come up with the goods, thank you! Then going to dig out my trowel and cover the hell out of my face and try make myself presentable and not teenagey and probs make it worse Grin

MAY EMPTIES, TRIALS, AND PLANNED PURCHASES

EMPTIES:

Nothing exciting.

LRP toleriane fluide, have ordered a few more bottles from Look Fantastic.

Garnier Body Repair extra dry skin body lotion, new bottle coming in my grocery order tonight.

Eucerin 10% lotion. Repurchased. This is on my list of staples now. It's quite expensive but really works.
LRP toleriane cleanser, all in my staples list so repurchased.

Bought second pot of Kiehl's avocado eye cream. Really like this. Brilliant base for concealer and the very, very slight green tint seems to brighten the area.

Hand Chemistry hand cream, didn't want to like this as it seems ££ for a hand cream but it's really good. Has made a visible difference to cuticles. Will be repurchasing.

PRODUCTS ON TRIAL:

No skincare.

Aveeno (blue top) lotion. The one with shea butter. Much better than the green top one. Great for sensitive areas. I'm using it on my shins where I'm prone to irritation from shaving. Good so far.

Lancôme teint idole ultra wear. Great colour, good lightish cover for Summer but can be built a bit. Lasts. Still working through the sample tubes but will be buying a full size when I'm done.

Redken All Soft conditioner and hair mask. Makes my hair far too fluffy and big. It is soft I suppose but zero weight which I need and it doesn't really add moisture. Won't be repurchasing.

Redken Heatcure hair mask. Only used one so far from a pack of 4. Quite like it. Hair felt smoother afterwards and was devotedly very shiny. Used after the shit eye haircut so it had its work cut out. (No pun intended). Unsure about repurchasing. Need to use Philip Kingsley Elasticizer again to compare.

Redken Cleansing Cream. Recommended by Mint Smile Like it, keeps my roots light without drying out the ends. Wish it was as cheap as my beloved, now discontinued, Pantene clarifying shampoo but will buy it again I think.

Toni and Guy texture detox shampoo. The 'texture' in the name of this confuses me and put me off using it as it's something you'd call a sea spray not a shampoo. Used it a couple of times. Quite like it but need to use again to compare to the Redken.

PLANNED PURCHASES:

Kiehl's creme de corps. Heard good things an now Summer is here, seems like a good time to try.

SPECIAL MENTION:

Cicaplast b5. My holy grail product. Might get a tattoo of it.

Rapidbrow and rapidlash. Still doing what they promise. Wish they lasted longer for the price but there you go.

Parlux hair dryer. Never saw the huge appeal until The Shit Eye Haircut and now it's come onto its own. Really helps the stupid flicky ends.

Pineapple ice lollies. Nothing to do with this thread but they're saving me atm. Grin

EnidButton · 31/05/2017 16:39

*definitely very shiny

Ollivander84 · 31/05/2017 16:41

I am melting. Remind me not to walk hills in the heat again Grin

purple15 · 31/05/2017 16:51

BaliBound -
I don't want to put any washing powder near my skin so I'm probably over cautious. I don't use fabric conditioner just washing powder and I rinse twice more once the cycle has finished. I do this for my bedding my towels and muslin clothes.
Can't see the point in using all these products and washing in fabric conditioner

Pupsiecola · 31/05/2017 16:56

Yes lol. And kids too!

miffy2 · 31/05/2017 17:11

Dulci my skin would be normal to dry, occasionally dehydrated (working on that), sometimes sensitive and aged 47 :)

I have a Kiehls' (Iris extract activating toner) essence that I bought ages ago without having a clue what it was and was using that for the 7 steps. The Blithe is noticeably thicker (little to no fragrance) and it jus t feels lovely.

banivani · 31/05/2017 17:15

Helloooooo ...

Have skimmed through the previous thread that I didn't have time to keep up with and am now back I think. Glad Ollivander's surgery went well and can completely commiserate with feelings about modern fashion, lack of. Was on a course in Stockholm today and went into Cos after and bought a nice pair of trousers though. Although would have preferred half price sale of course but hey. At least very few ruffles in that shop. I don't consider myself an hourglass figure but seemingly the shops think I am, am never finding clothes.

My skin is super shit and I am very depressed about it. I feel so ugly. Got a good few big cysts and am now pockmarked and blotched. I can't pinpoint the triggers at all. Although admittedly I patch test in my face and have no system but still. It's fucking depressing. I've never smoked, I hardly drink, I don't eat pure shit food and I do fucking drink water. I'm not cutting out dairy and gluten and diminishing my quality of life without any guarantees and it's not fair that people on drugs have better skin than me. Not fair.

wiltingfast · 31/05/2017 17:31

MAY EMPTIES, TRIALS, AND PLANNED PURCHASES

EMPTIES

TO niacinamide; have RP! I use it on blemishes mostly, one side effect of my new skin care is a lot of spots on the tender under jaw area. I try to put nothing there, but my fingers must drift onto it in-spite of me.

LRP toleriane fluide, another RP, no surprise there.

PRODUCTS ON TRIAL

Retinoid 2%; I'm really liking this. It doesn't not irritate in any way. My skins seems to really like it also. No redness etc. Seems to calm and dry my t zone up a bit. Down side, I do notice I am more prone to a little dryness on one side of my mouth which is probably this.

I'm not sure what I said last month, but just to be clear, I have ceased and desisted the Alpha Arbutin (castor oil in it giving me spot cheeks adn results seem limited enough) and Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (too heavy for me, worsens the oil production in my t zone a lot)

Clarins Ever Matte Foundation; I think this is irritating my skin. I'm getting a crawly itchiness mid day on. I'm finding it a tricky foundation anyway. Somedays it looks a dream, other days it catches the dry patch around my mouth and is visibly broken up on my skin. Have tried it with primer, but haven't figured out what is different on the bad days. I will not be RPing.

PLANNED PURCHASES:

TO niacinamide
TO 23% vitamin C
TO 2% retinoid (bought a back up to get free shipping)
Hylamide serum

Looking forward to trialing the TO 23%!

SPECIAL MENTION:

Nothing this month...

Hope all the fainters and menders are well! Grin

Interested to see rapidbrow getting a good mention, I could do with something to beef em up. They are blonde and invisible. Will check it out!

EnidButton · 31/05/2017 18:03

Bani it's not fair. Flowers I really sympathise. It does seem like those who take zero care of their skin have no problems. It frustrates me sometimes. Hopefully you're just having a blip. It takes around 27 days for skin to regenerate. ( ) so hang in there. 🐒

yongnian · 31/05/2017 18:39

tantpoke sorry, it's the LRP Toleriane Dermo cleanser I'm loving on.
bo we can have a shelf-porn off!!!! Grin
balibound - your photo looks like what mine does whenever I use PC BHA and I see you use it too.....?? I use mine in a very small area, so I get a smaller version but it's v v similar...
olli that garden is lovely.
enid pineapple ice lollies sound lovely

banivani · 31/05/2017 18:50

Thanks Enid but it's just relentless and never ends. I'm so fed up with benzoyl peroxide bleach stains on everything for one... also no one is ooing and aaahing over my new trousers but are instead displaying scepticism 😩

LordWontYouBuyMeAMercedesBenz · 31/05/2017 19:11

Good evening everyone!

I've been using some of the products recommended couple of weeks so thought I'd join in with the reviews:

Empties:
Face Theory aha/bha cleanser: I quite liked this at first as it was very gentle but after a few weeks of using I've decided not to repurchase. It didn't seem to have an effect and I wasn't keen on the scent.

Products on trial:
TO vitamin C 23% - no results seen so far but will continue for now.

TO retinoid 2% - no obvious results so far after 2 weeks but will continue with it for now.

Pai oil - nice to apply but so far I'm not sure it's any better than the cheaper sanctuary therapists secret oil which I've previously used.

Nip & fab glycolic pads - love these, will definitely repurchase.

Nip & fab bee sting cream- not sure on this yet. It's very thick and quite moisturising but I think it was the cause of spot breakout so I'm not loving it yet. Will persevere though and see if my skin gets used to it.

Nip & fab viper venom: disappointed in this. It had great reviews online for its moisturising properties but I found it quite drying and sticky to apply.

No7 SPF factor 30- nice to apply and doesn't feel greasy but it does seem to make my make up slide so I'm trying to leave longer between applying this and putting make up on (though not much time to spare in the mornings!) will try it a bit longer and if still no better will have to trial something else.

Planned purchases:
TO buffet

LRP Toleraine fluid

More nip & fab pads

Another spf

botemp · 31/05/2017 20:52

bani Flowers, it is tough and grossly unfair. I know you mentioned your DDs had success with Roaccutane, has this never been an option for you? Oh and drug addicts have terrible skin, if not now they will really soon.

Just link the trousers, I've probably tried them on along with everything else and will be able to tell you if they're perfectly normal COS daft or just daft Grin

Bali, detergent can definitely be at play. I'm especially sensitive to it in my flannels, I use Ecover and nothing else but even if it's used in too high quantities it can set off sensitivities with me.

otyt, you're right it does seem to be in stock again. Useful info, will order it soon for the body. I'd expect shipping to be about 7-10 days, Royal Mail is really slow.

Well yongnian, I'm planning on visiting Pharmacie du Monge which is where all the Japanese and Koreans go and they even have all the rankings from those countries up all over the place. So, you know, good luck trying to beat that perfect synergy of skin nuts all coming together Wink

Pupsie, I was in H&B today attempting to buy out of stock things and saw they had testers out for Ultrasun and their sport one seems really nice. It sank in really easily and quickly and had a noticeable seal, very alcoholic for 5 secs but then fine. It's only SPF20 but if you're not out for a long period of time it seems like a good option, esp. if M&S sell the samples to try.

Enid, pineapple lollies do indeed sound nice. Anyone have any good avocado use up recipes? I'm suddenly stuck with a glut of them as they were on offer, lots of baby ones in a net and didn't realise how many. They've all decided to perfectly ripe at the exact same time. I swear this is my punishment for my first world guilt over them, now only worse with the prospect of having to toss them out. Are those avocado chocolate mousses any good or is it just sticky greasy chocolate?

MAY EMPTIES, TRIALS, AND PLANNED PURCHASES

EMPTIES:

TO Retinoid 2% - I'm on my 3rd RP. It works fine for the price, not exactly missing my Verso one but I did like the results with that slightly better. Just not 20x more expensive better

TO Vit C 23% - I'm on my 4th RP of this (I think), and again it stays for the price and not much else. Am concerned with how fast I go through them, this one went a little quicker as I was doing an experiment on the body but still left wondering if it's a bit of false economy. Contemplating trying the Medik8 CE Theon once this is finished.

My homemade ACV concoction with nettles and rosemary- used this as a rinse post shampoo and condition and in a spray for a quick 'dry' shampoo treatment in between washes. Love it, it's brilliant, am making it again. Despite shitty haircut bringing me down my hair has managed to grow at least an inch since then. Recipe here - just ignore the clay bit.

Pack Age Monthly New Feet - this is like a Korean Footner (I paid €3) but a much milder version and actually lives up to the name quite well. I used the Tony Moly Shiny New Foot last year and that is a bit more like Footner in strength with masses amount of shedding but my feet don't need that much. These were perfect for intermittent maintenance. It started shedding much quicker than TM and only removed minimal layers leaving me with nice and soft feet but not overly dry or suddenly prone to dry feet like I did with the more heavy duty stuff.

LRP Thermal Water- I love this stuff... which is why I always have backups of it, despite that I'm getting restless about even thinking I may not have enough backups in the house... if Enid gets the Cicaplast B5 tattoo I might get one of these

PRODUCTS ON TRIAL:

Kiko Power Pro Nail Lacquer in 103 Nude Rose - the first in my attempt to get the perfect YNBB shade whilst I continue to mourn the loss of my current one. Unfortunately, this isn't it, slightly too white and I'd prefer it to be a bit more transparent. May have been down to using two coats as I just wasn't talented enough to get away with a single layer. It is a bit thicker than what I'm used to, good brush though. Long staying power, I used a base and top coat and it didn't chip or get damaged until day 8 or 9 but it was a massive bit of damage. I initially thought I'd chipped the nail rather than the polish as it had so violently broken off but it was just the lacquer... so it has that going for it at only €3.

PLANNED PURCHASES:

SVR SOLAIRE SUN SECURE BLUR CREME MOUSSE TOUTES PEAUX SPF50 - new tinted sunscreen from SVR with Niacinamide and in mousse form. It seems to be ranking really highly currently on the French ranking site along with the Bioderma Nude Touch, LRP Anthelios XL UF remains the undisputed no. 1 though.

SVR Sensifine Dermo Cleanser - looking at this as it's similar to LRP but this contains Nia and no coconut derivatives. Might put off actually purchasing as I'm getting the Decubal offer below.

Avene Xeracalm Oil Cleanser once my LRP Lipikar CO runs out

Uncover Suncover SPF30 for the body

Decubal Vital Cream and probably the Cleansing Milk as it's a 2 for 1 type offer at H&B currently.

Ehm Surratt things, yeah let's just leave it at that

SPECIAL MENTION:

Surrat Grissaile sculpting powder... ehm I'm unhealthily obsessed with it. Bloody brilliant, that is all.

Active Formulas CS is pants. I've ordered early May, it still hasn't arrived. First email asking about where my order was never got a reply. The second email got a reply days later with the helpful message to check with my local postage office. No tracking info or anything and there are about 5 postal offices in the immediate area and depending on who is delivering it they end up leaving it with a random one. And they usually leave a card after trying to deliver it twice. I fear this is going to end up in a PayPal dispute Angry

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 31/05/2017 21:00

I think avocado is meant to work well in smoothies. Personally I eat it with far too much red onion and feta and crispy bacon on toast. Also works with a poached egg on top

botemp · 31/05/2017 21:06

Yeah, that's not the issue. I tend to go through plenty of avocados on a weekly basis for lunch/dinner/sometimes breakfast and there's only so much guacamole I can stand. It's just that I have about 9 that all need to be used up soon. Am wondering if I could freeze them in little cubes.

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 31/05/2017 21:23

Bad avocados! Mine usually go not ripe, not ripe, black Angry
