Little things that mean Style Death

I read the other day that one of the worst things you can do style-wise is to miss out a belt loop on your trousers. I've never done this, but I do permanently have a hair bobble around my wrist. This is apparently a big NO. What other little things should I not be doing?

All those who like to wear bobbles round their wrist, I bought this and don't have the red mark of doom anymore Grin

I used to be super stylish - I really loved fashion and wouldn't leave the house if I didn't look right. Now I'm older and middle age seems to have flicked a switch so I don't give a damn. I also have piled on weight and got hurty feet, both of which make it harder to look good - in fact, I probably am Captain Anti Fashion.

I don't mind these threads, though. I think if you're interested in fashion you inevitably have to comment on what you think is unstylish - so long as you keep civil and kind, and respectful of others' choices, that is fine. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with fashion, or with beauty ideals, so long as they are a voluntary activity. My problem is a society that tells young women that this is what is important about them, that makes being image-obsessed compulsory.

IfNot · 25/05/2017 13:55

Who makes up all these "rules" anyway?

I do!

IfNot · 25/05/2017 13:56

In my head anyway...

BusterGonad · 25/05/2017 14:35

Sorry Ketzele, I didn't mean to offend, I did try to say that people with feet problems obviously have it hard but I didn't quite say it properly! I wouldn't wish foot problems in anyone! Sad

Ketzele · 25/05/2017 15:01

I'm not offended, BusterGonad! I was being a wise older woman letting you in on The Knowledge. I often look at my own feet and think wtf happened ten years ago you would have had to knock me over the head with a spade to get me in shoes like this. I had this image of getting older, that the big problem was wrinkles. I now know that wrinkles are the bloody least of it. Ditto grey hair. It's the strange bristles that emerge on your chin, the arthritis/feet that make you hobble around like an octogenarian, the thickenings in your body that refuse to budge, the chronic low level aches and pains that make you look grumpy all the time - these are the true enemies of style!

BusterGonad · 25/05/2017 15:05

I'm not in my prime Ket, I've been diagnosed with a autoimmune disease, my hairs a freaking mess, don't even mention the facial hair! I have zero energy and some days i can't even be arsed to leave the house! Age is catching up with me too and it's just bloody horrible. To think I used to go out drinking to the early hours, get up for work and do it all again! Confused

ImperfectTents · 25/05/2017 17:39

Obviously I love all women and they can dress head to toe in fleeces and trainer socks - but cold shoulder tops/dresses wtaf? They are horrific

nina2b · 25/05/2017 17:54

Boots and bare legs? Ugh

AnxiousButFunnyWithIt · 25/05/2017 17:56

Oh grubby flesh coloured bras worn with dark clothes. Actually flesh coloured underwear really gives me the willies!

CherylVole · 25/05/2017 18:14

No leggings. None. Thick black or not. They're just shit.

Skater dresses on anyone over 8 stone.

DarthMaiden · 25/05/2017 18:21

My list:

  • sandles/open toed shoes when your feet are covered in hard skin, you have chipped nail polish and generally look like hooves. There is no excuse for exposing this to the public at large.
  • thongs sticking out the back of your trousers when you sit down
  • wearing branded clothes eg super dry. You are not a walking advert
  • boden - for the reason above. Yes it's not branded but it's just obviously boden
  • matching your outfit with your DH/child. It's not cute - it's fucking hideous
  • wearing sunglasses inside. It does not make you look cool or like a A Lister in hiding
  • transparent clothing. Yes your boobs are great. I don't need to see them though
  • earrings so big they stretch your earlobe. It just looks uggghhhh
  • scrunchies, just no.
  • instagram eybrows. Have you actually looked in the mirror before you left the house? 2 dead slugs on your face does not look good, ever

I have more but I'm fed up with typing....

expatinscotland · 25/05/2017 18:22

'For me and the sock thing I wear some invisible socks for casual dressing like these. Trainer socks would just look odd poking out of the top of converse or similar.'

I can't keep those 'invisible socks' on my feet. They fall off in back. So I wear whatever the fuck I feel like it and I care not if it's 'odd', it's comfortable.

nina2b · 25/05/2017 18:23

Dresses worn with leggings.

nina2b · 25/05/2017 18:24

Blingy bags and big watches.

Pandora

nina2b · 25/05/2017 18:26

Asymmetric, long, frumpy cardigans.

DarthMaiden · 25/05/2017 18:29

Ok I couldn't resist...

  • pop socks
  • tights with open toed shoes
  • denim dungarees on anyone over 5 years old
  • anything causing flesh overspill because it's too tight and yes bras count. Just cause we can't see the clothing we can see the fleshy wad at your back or the double boob creation at the front through your clothes
  • irregular choice shoes. They are hideous, not quirky.
  • multiple rings on each hand
  • really bad hair dye jobs
  • overly thick foundation
FunkinEll · 25/05/2017 18:32

Eeek, expatinscotland, I was only giving my opinion. Plenty of stuff I wear is mentioned in this thread, I was just sharing mine.

Turneeps · 25/05/2017 18:32

Tights with peep toe shoes. I cringe when I see toes in tights Confused - can't believe noone said this yet!

Place marking for later

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 25/05/2017 18:42

Anything that looked crap when you wore it the first time round (e.g. 1985)

Shutupanddance1 · 25/05/2017 18:47

Irregular choice shoes were my wedding shoes Sad

leghoul · 25/05/2017 18:49

Captain Anti Fashion sounds incredibly stylish

nina2b · 25/05/2017 18:51

Black opaques look good with open-toed wedges. Alexa Chung rocked the look.
