Is this dress really awful?

teal dress

The colour is one of my best and I need a long dress (that I'll never wear again) for a do. I bought this from another site where the only picture was the front view of the dress without model and thought it would do for the price.

Now I've seen the side with the split and the zip and the fact that it even makes the model look lumpy I'm not so sure. I'm 5'7" , 47yo, size 10 (although have ordered a Jane Norman 12) and properly fit and toned, even if I say so myself Grin

Dress code requires closed shoes so I can wear tights to help with the leg situation and smooth any bumps. What do you think?

Failing that try "mother of the bride" on ebay Grin

Carriecakes80 · 26/04/2017 22:05

God, I'd only be able to fit an Eyelash of mine in that dress lol. Get soem great pants and you'll be well away, although, if I had the kind of figure that could fit into this dress, I would be going naked.....you only live once ;-) lol

PollyPerky · 26/04/2017 22:07

It looks like a nightie.

There is no shaping to it and goodness knows how you could wear foundation garments :)

A bra? Knickers?

I think you'd look trashy- just too much flesh on show. Full stop.

You can get off the shoulder frocks that have some built in upholstery - bra, boning, that kind of thing- but not this one.

readyforno2 · 26/04/2017 22:10

I love the colour and the shape. The zip spoils it for me though. As a pp has already mentioned it makes it look cheap and nasty.

Sciurus83 · 26/04/2017 22:10

Sorry it's a miss from me. Your original picture I can see why you liked it but the material, the split, the zip are a big no no. I'd be totes to cut losses here.

PollyPerky · 26/04/2017 22:10

If the dress code asks for closed shoes, surely that is a hint? They won't expect people to wear closed shoes but also show off all their ample assets ( Daily Fail speak). Isn't a bit of decorum advisable?

Emphasise · 26/04/2017 22:12

They won't Polly, which is where there's fun to be had Grin I don't have any ample assets though.

The colour is lovely, but it does look a bit light a nightie or what my mum would have called a slip.

CherylVole · 26/04/2017 22:17

i likehte dress in the OP
am fasciated by closed toe shoes though - why?

BuzzKillington · 26/04/2017 22:29

I too am intrigued by a dress codes that requires closed toes.

Is the do in a laboratory?

Emphasise · 26/04/2017 22:30

No idea. It's a military thing, which explains all kinds of oddness.

OP posts:
Rachel0Greep · 26/04/2017 22:30

Nice colour, but I agree, it isn't a particularly nice dress.

DevilsDumplings · 26/04/2017 22:31

Yes sorry the dress is really awful. It looks like cheap polyester that will go up in flames due to static electric Grin no offence meant but you did ask.

MerryMarigold · 26/04/2017 22:34

OK, I believe you Eatshit. The pic of the catwalk model looks precarious though and she's hardly got a boob! Need a corset made of cement to keep my boobs in check.

CherylVole · 26/04/2017 22:37

fuck them - wear what shoes you like - WTAF will they do?

KindDogsTail · 26/04/2017 22:37

It does look a bit cheap. It would be OK for a teenager, but if there is even a dress code stipulating closed shoes, it might stand out as cheap.

It sounds as though you have a beautiful figure and all sorts of thing would suit you, this too in its way. But a dress for someone 47 should have a quality of poise and dignity about it, as well as glamour, in my opinion.

You could hire something of you don't think you'll wear it again.

jcscot · 26/04/2017 22:39

If it's a military ball or dinner thwm that dress is not suitable. (Army wife speaking here.)

The colour is fab and the picture of it from the front looks good but the zip and the slit make it look cheap and I suspect the fabric won't help.

MichaelSheensNextDW · 26/04/2017 22:45

Sorry op wearing that to a military do would be a big faux pas.
Colour is fab though.

jcscot · 26/04/2017 22:45

As for the poster who asked what they can do? Well, "they" can ask you to leave the Mess if they deem you to be inappropriately dressed (TBF, this is a worst-case scenario and would very much depend on the Mess involved) or they can be rather hard on the military person who invited you, or you may be offered a shawl or something to cover up a bit.

nooddsocksforme · 26/04/2017 22:51

www.very.co.uk/little-mistress-embellished-maxi-dress/1431916263.prd not quite teal tho.
sounds like you have a great figure so you will
look fine in the dress but it doesn't look classy

MichaelSheensNextDW · 26/04/2017 22:52

This is lovely

Even better

Orangebird69 · 26/04/2017 22:57

Sorry OP, it's a horrid colour and it looks flammable Blush

PickAChew · 26/04/2017 23:11

With your figure, if you want to wear something more "appropriate" without spending a fortune, something like this might be better (OK, I know it's not teal, but it's a colour that complements similar skin tones, as far as it show on my screen)

Emphasise · 27/04/2017 07:54

Oh I don't know. I dont think I was ever actually going to wear it and usually I'm all for buying the best quality you can afford etc. I could buy a decent dress without starving but this all seems such a nonsense for something that will hardly be worn and only be worn in the dark!

I can't wear a wrap front as I have no boobs to fill it so they always gape.

I do have one really good silk dress that meets all the requirements but it's 10 years old and I wore it last time.....

The dresses Michael and Pick found really are like beautiful versions of the one you found. Why not give yourself the treat of having one? You would look so lovely.

Or, perhaps you could look into hiring a dress.
