Has the 'scarf' had its day...

I may be the last to realise but the scarf really seems to be now rather passé. I have many that I would previously throw on with a blazer, t-shirt or jumper and feel fab. Having just been trawling through pin interest, every image that showed a 30 or 40 something wearing a scarf, just looked really dated.
It was such a great, easy accessory. Now what! Interesting jewellery, bags, the skinny scarf?

Chunky. Obviously. Blush

SugarLoveHeart · 12/01/2017 00:29

Statement necklace. Never been there!
Waterfall cardigan. Nuff said.

Though, as someone pointed out earlier, different looks suit different people. I've always been a scarf person. My SIL is an earring person. Statement necklace / waterfall cardigan folk probably feel sorry for us!

BitOutOfPractice · 12/01/2017 00:41

I think you can actually be banned from MN for wearing a waterfall cardigan. It's in the Ts and Cs

shinynewusername · 12/01/2017 06:23

And rightly so, Bitout Grin

shinynewusername · 12/01/2017 06:30

cleehope have you tried Wonderbras recently? They're much more comfortable than they used to be and they are good & thick. I have ridiculous 28E boobs, so the last thing I need is more padding, but I wear Wonderbras because they've so comfy.

CaroleService · 12/01/2017 06:36

I make an exception for leopard print

Stillwishihadabs · 12/01/2017 06:46

It's just touching 0 here am about to take ds to the train, the scarf is staying on this morning.

abbsisspartacus · 12/01/2017 06:51

My 16 year old wears a scarf constantly

InvisibleKittenAttack · 12/01/2017 07:01

I think floaty scarfs are looking a bit dated and have just given a pile to a charity shop. Will still wear scarfs this week as it's bloody freezing, but am going for the knitted snug type.

DrScholl · 12/01/2017 07:03

The plural of scarf is scarves.

DrScholl · 12/01/2017 07:03

Yes. And I dgaf

ClaryIsTheBest · 12/01/2017 07:50

I love thick blanket scarves. And these thinner, usually soft wool scarves (often with a tartan pattern or tassels? What's their English name?).

I can wear them just to keep my neckwear my warm or tie them if it's colder. I love how Cumber-something wears his scarf as Sherlock, btw...

But I agree with the person that says she likes shawls. They're also lovely :)

However, imo scarves are worn for warmth. I do sometimes wear them inside. But that's when there's a draught or if it's cold.

Idk if indoor or summer scarves 'had their day'. I wear one in summer if it's windy. But generally speaking I'd say that if a scarf doesn't have a function (warmth) then I won't wear it.

lisam78 · 12/01/2017 09:36

If you like them, wear them! I love scarves, and have lots - blanket style, silk, skinny etc. I think they add interest (and warmth), and can look great. The pictures might not all be from 2016, but I don't care. I'm 38, enjoy fashion but don't slavishly follow it (I'll never wear a crop top!). Scarves look good on me, so I'll keep wearing them regardless. Rant over 😁

Why read a style and beauty thread if your whole point is 'wear something if you like it and don't wear it if you don't like it'. It's hardly a lightbulb comment

I presume that was directed at me (and others with similar views). In case it had escaped your notice, S&B is about 'style and beauty' as opposed to 'current high street fashion'. Whilst bootcut jeans might be harder to find in the shops, scarves certainly aren't and I don't think we're about to face a scarf shortage.

There - 2 further lightbulb comments for you Smile.

I only ever wear infinity scarves (so I guess I'm far from fashionable). If I see a scarf I like that isn't an infinity scarf, I sew the ends together.

Like a PP said, scarves are my accessory of choice. I don't wear jewellery and I feel half dressed without a scarf. Being a wheelchair user, I tend towards "comfy" (and plain black) clothes, and an interesting print on a scarf just livens my outfits up a bit.

lisam78 · 12/01/2017 11:19

SirChenjin - my post wasn't directed at anyone actually, no need for the aggressive tone. And I certainly don't need any light bulb comments 😀
I read this forum all the time, going by the op's post, she was asking if scarves are passé - some people agree and others not. I was simply making the point that if you are really into fashion then you might want to put the scarves away for a season, but if you are not, but still like to be stylish and the item in question suits, then go ahead.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/01/2017 11:25

lisam which I think is exactly what SirChenjin was saying

SirChenjin · 12/01/2017 11:27

lisam - I was responding to Thrilled's post from last night at 20.45 Smile I completely agree with you, wear them if you like them, don't if you don't!

BarbedBloom · 12/01/2017 11:28

I love Fleur and have watched her for years, but I do sometimes despair over her shoes and outfit choices. I do like though that she says she wears what she likes and tough if other people don't like it and I would argue she has better outfit choices than estee.

I only own one scarf that I wear with my jackets and it has stars on it and I love it. I am moving to Korea soon so will be investing in a couple more warm ones before we go. But I never really got the scarf thing aside from warmth and was always more about jewellery.

ClaryIsTheBest · 12/01/2017 11:57

Uhm.... who is this Fleur everybody keeps talking about?

slalomsuki · 12/01/2017 12:06

I am I the only person on this thread who can remember the Mumsnet scarf?

PolaDeVeboise · 12/01/2017 12:44

Slalomsuki - didn't Nicola McLean wear one first time she went in to the CBB house?

I love a real scarf in the winter, a knitted thing that keeps your neck warm!
