Has the 'scarf' had its day...

I may be the last to realise but the scarf really seems to be now rather passé. I have many that I would previously throw on with a blazer, t-shirt or jumper and feel fab. Having just been trawling through pin interest, every image that showed a 30 or 40 something wearing a scarf, just looked really dated.
It was such a great, easy accessory. Now what! Interesting jewellery, bags, the skinny scarf?

clee

Tape them? I do that when I'm braless.

Thrilled · 11/01/2017 18:41

Sir are you a politician?

I like scarves. I wear them when it's cool/cold. I don;t wear them when it's warm. Surely that's all that matters? Who cares if they are 'in' or 'out' - that's ridiculous.

RemusLupinsChristmasMovie · 11/01/2017 18:46

don't

midsomermurderess · 11/01/2017 18:49

Well that Northen Irish schoolgate mum blogger (now under a new name) has issued some scarf tying advice, so I'm guessing yes.

Thrilled · 11/01/2017 18:55

Remus you're misunderstanding the type of scarf we're discussing.

OverByYer · 11/01/2017 18:58

Funnily enough I noticed the other day that I haven't worn any off my scarves in ages.
I do wear a warm one in work as my office is freezing.

RemusLupinsChristmasMovie · 11/01/2017 19:03

No I'm not. Light scarves for cool (which I assume is the ones you're discussing), big scarf for cold. No scarf at all if warm.

AuldAlliance · 11/01/2017 19:19

Have been dipping in and out and am a bit stunned at the idea that an entire category of clothing can suddenly be deemed "out". Shows the power of marketing.
Am now awaiting the thread about how passé shoes are....

Hohumming · 11/01/2017 19:35

Ah it isn't an entire category of clothing in fairness. The thread is about thin scarves neckties that are accessories mainly. Big/wool/blanket etc scarves are still very much in use.

A better comparison is that big hoop earrings went 'out' of fashion (thankfully) but other earrings remain a jewellery staple.

Accessories (which is what thin scarves were) are much more fickle in general.

Thrilled · 11/01/2017 19:49

Remus temperature doesn't come in to it. Worn indoors and in summer. Worn as an accessory.

Sadly, I've been thinking about this today as I looked around at all us 'unfashionables' in our scarves

In the main, I wear my scarves to 'tie' my outfit together/add interest/detract from spare tyre (long scarves!)
Occasionally there is a warmth factor involved and will use it as a layer to add/remove as temp fluctuations dictate

I also wear one in the car over a jumper that goes fluffy/bobbly from my seatbelt!! It then gets removed (scarf, not jumper!!) when I get out

I can't see me moving too far away from them completely anytime soon

ChishandFips33 · 11/01/2017 20:09

I meant to say in the office, rather than imply outdoors

RemusLupinsChristmasMovie · 11/01/2017 20:15

My argument remains that if you like scarves, wear them. If you even like wearing scarves in the summer, wear them. It really, really doesn't matter if some geezer at a magazine or fashion house decrees that they are in or out. And on that note, I'm out! Grin

Hohumming · 11/01/2017 20:33

But we tend to follow the trend, eventually even if we disagree at first. Look at bootcut jeans. Undeniably more flattering than skinnies on the vast majority of people, the advantages of not having wet frayed ends became apparent and eventually we began to feel out of date and unfashionable and out of touch in an older person way with current trends. Bootcuts began to get harder and harder to find. I was one who vowed I would keep wearing them and I gave in later than most but my point is I did give in. I recently did acwardrove clear out and tried on a pair and I thought they looked ridiculously old fashioned. I'm unsure why as I was one of those people who ran out last year to buy a newer pair of bootcuts when there was even a hint of them coming back in. So we are dictated by the fashion industry because they dictate what is available in the shops. That and for the most part we all give at least a nod towards current styles.

Thrilled · 11/01/2017 20:45

hohum well put. There is a feeling sometimes in style and beauty, that it's somehow wrong or sad to follow fashion in any way. Why read a style and beauty thread if your whole point is 'wear something if you like it and don't wear it if you don't like it'. It's hardly a lightbulb comment.

Lighten up people! 😬

Clee - t-shirt bras are brill for protruding nipples.

Bootcuts - never stopped wearing them.

Scarves - got given one by mil last year. Haven't worn a scarf (apart from winter Woolley one) since being a student. Suspect strongly it was re-gifted, as I also got a tube of Avon moisturiser, and a calendar with it, but that's a whole other thread... .

BitOutOfPractice · 11/01/2017 21:30

I'm wearing a scarf right now but having thought a bit too much about this thread, I am doing so with little confidence.

I bought a lovely red sweater dress in the sales. I do like it but it's very, well, Plain i. guess. I felt like it needed breaking up somehow so I added a scarf.

What should I have done?

Thrilled · 11/01/2017 21:51

bit it's hard to say without seeing the dress, but what about jewellery. Or I'd be tempted to embrace the plain particularly if it's red. Sounds lovely.

CointreauVersial · 11/01/2017 21:54

Very interesting! I have a gazillion of those lightweight scarves, and used to wear them all the time to "pull" an outfit together, or pick out a colour from elsewhere. But over the last year I've worn them less and less, and it's only now I'm reading this thread that I realise.

Thick scarves (for warmth) are still essential, though.

Hohumming · 11/01/2017 21:54

I wore one at the weekend in an attempt to make a plain grey top more interesting. I was meeting an 80+ year old relative and when I first saw her, my heart sank as she was wearing one too! I felt both old and old fashioned simultaneously.
My scarf wasn't at all functional, it wasn't even worn to hide my neck wrinkles ass I suspect was the reason for hers. In hindsight,
I think a nice bracelet or a simple pair of earrings might have looked more chic.

Sadik · 11/01/2017 22:07

I wear a neck tube / buff pretty much all the time with casual clothes (tendency to upper back muscle pain and keeping my neck warm helps). But I definitely don't see it as a fashionable choice and would leave it off a 'nice' outfit.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/01/2017 22:16

Yes, maybe a chinky necklace would work better. It really Is Plain with a sort of turtle neck which I suspect doesn't suit me. But I loved the dress

FootBone · 11/01/2017 22:51

Hmm. I am pear shaped and find biggish becksondergaard type scarves in big but light fabric, looped loosely round, are helpful to balance out the hips.
Agree not very stylish as a fashion statement but works with my proportions.
I like the massive blanket scarf thing on other (younger) people but have seriously no idea how they are tying those monsters on to themselves.

wizzywig · 11/01/2017 22:59

Nipple stickers are what you need! Brilluant invention. But back to scarves, i didnt like the 'tie and floaty scarf on a bag' look.
