I am on the hunt for a REALLY good pair of fake diamond stud earrings... can you recommend any?

I am a horror with earrings and generally manage to lose them quite quickly which is why I don't want an actual pair of diamond studs (plus the £1k cost) but the current ones a have just don't sparkle and look pretty grotty. I ordered a pair from brilliant Inc which were super sparkly but the fitting of the butterfly was really lose and for £65 I was not happy so returned them. Has anyone bought from trudiamonds, carat or any other specialist in good fake sparklers?

I have some from carat that I got for my wedding. They're gorgeous. Carat shop in London is really nice.

consider getting a replacement from brilliant Inc - I came on to suggest them. Mine are excellent, I really don't think you can tell the difference from mined diamonds (well - not unless you're an expert and have a microscope). The backs on mine aren't loose at all, if anything they're really tight so I think yours could have been a one off. Perhaps call them up to explain and see if they could check the replacement pair?

I've had several pairs from M&S over the years that have fooled friends. They are much cheaper though, £10/15 rather than £60. Not sure how they compare to the Carat/Brilliant ones in terms of quality.

Normal butterflies can be tightened by squeezing them together. I used to work at an uber posh jewellers and if people brought in earrings saying the butterflies were too loose we would just take them out the back and squeeze them hard.

I bought 2 pairs of screw backs from USA (on eBay) but they are quite fiddly, DD managed to lose 2 of the backs and I CBA trying to find replacements.

I've seen some nice ones in Debenhams, but if you do ever get real ones you don't have to worry about the backs because they screw in rather than have push-on backs.

Every few weeks I just make sure mine haven't unscrewed at all. ]

Carat have a particularly good selection of cuts. The trick is not to go too big - no bigger than 1 carat (smaller if you have small or joined earlobes). Keeps everything plausible (although if you care about passing for the real thing, butterfly backs will give you away; as a pp said, real diamond studs generally have screw backs).

Wow. How did I not know about synthetic diamonds? I had a pair of CZ ones, but I never liked them, they looked very false - far too big and an unpleasant shadow on the colour. Have ordered a pair of classic cut from Brilliant Inc with my birthday money. Can't wait to see them.

I didn't even know about the screw backs on proper diamond studs! I did order 0.7 carat from Brilliant Inc but they were too big on me so will go for 0.5 nex time

I have 3 pairs of diamnd studs, none have screw backs.

All different jewellers and expensive not high street chain.

Swarovski do some really nice ones. Excellent quality.

I got some Swarovski ones from amazon a couple of years ago for £5 a pair! Bought 2 incase they went tarnished but the second pair are still in the wrapper! Sterling silver too

i have a pair of 3 carat diamond earrings which don't have screw backs, i wouldnt wear them if they did because they are very uncomfortable. So i will rubbish your theory with that one.

Carat are really good I had mine for years before getting some real ones. My diamond studs are butterfly backs too.

Another vote for QVC Diamonique. I have several pairs and a few rings and everyone thinks they're real. They're amazed when I tell them how much they really cost, lol.

Very surprised at the larger ones having butterfly backs. I wouldn't risk that.

As for some others, well the smaller ones may not have butterfly backs. It is generally only over a carat that do.

The screw backs are not uncomfortable at all. Why would they be? The back is the same size and a similar shape to a butterfly so I don't understand why someone would be ok wearing a butterfly but not a screw.

Well i have had both, and you can be very surprised at the fact that mine have butterfly backs, and i cant get on with screw backs,which i find uncomfortable as the posts are generally thicker.

My diamond studs have butterfly backs and they are over a carat. My mum recently bought a pair that had screw backs--she hated them-the posts were really thick (to incorporate the screw thread) and she just couldn't get them comfortably in her ear. She had the posts changed by the jeweller to a normal butterfly back.
