I can no longer afford Lancôme mascara. What's the next best thing?

I'm on maternity leave and need to adjust my budget accordingly glares at DH

Have used Lancôme Grandiose since it came out and I LOVE it. However, I can no longer justify £25 on a tube of mascara now I'm on maternity pay so I'm looking for an alternative, under £15.

What's best? I have half decent lashes but they need fattening and lengthening.

Thanks in advance Flowers

Max Factor Masterpiece here as well. Have used the waterproof one for years.

dragonflygirl1 · 21/05/2016 09:24

I wear natural collection because it lasts for ages, doesn't go clumpy or lumpy and it's £2!!!!

Woodhill · 21/05/2016 12:58

I like Benefit - they're real, some Clinique mascara a

Buy the travel size version of your favourite dear brand. I read that as a tip on here last year and it hit me like duh. The brush is still the same size, they last for the three months a year in my case and it doesn't go claggy. I'm a huge fan of Benefit roller mascara and buy them on eBay for £5-£9.

Maybelline Lash Sensational. It's been called a dupe for nearly every high end mascara release of the last 12 months. All I know is that I love it!

StrangeDream · 21/05/2016 17:59

I went for a Maybelline one... http://m.boots.com/h5/cathub?unCountry=uk&path=%2Fen%2FMaybelline-Falsies-Mascara-Very-Blackk_1439559%2F

Haven't used it yet. They had the brushes on display which was really helpful. Will report back tomorrow Grin

Link is fucked. It's the Falsies one in black.

Maybelline. I've tried everything and have always gone back to it.

EnidButton · 21/05/2016 23:22

I hate the They're Real Benefit one. Found it very clumpy even after a wipe of the excess, then it just flaked off. My sister loves it though so she got mine.

I think the brush makes the biggest difference when picking a mascara. I like really fat fibre brushes so avoid the ones with rubber or plastic bristles.

Waiting to see what you think of the Maybelline one. I use Diorshow, £25, so a cheaper one for everyday would be good.

I am a total mascara junkie - in the last year alone I have bought and used Charlotte Tilsbury, Doll 7, Mally and something called Sensei 38 (I think), each costing in excess of £20 and some nearer to £40. I supplemented these with strip lashes.

About two months ago I was going out at short notice with no mascara in my bag and picked up Rimmel Colourist mascara in Boots - it was a game changer for me - it gives a really intense black, it gets close enough to the root to volumise and outline so no need for eyeliner AND it tints the lashes gradually so I look better even when I'm not wearing it.

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 22/05/2016 11:18

They're Real really irritated my eyes. Plus taking it off was a nightmare. I used to look like I'd been battered the next day.

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 22/05/2016 11:23

I've just added Rimmel Colourist to my Subscribe and Save on Amazon. I'll get it every three months for £5.09.

lem73 · 22/05/2016 16:18

Sharon I found that as well with the benefit mascara. It was ridiculous. I bought the masterpiece mascara on the recommendation of this thread. Fingers crossed it won't end up in the bin with all the other failures!

OurBlanche · 22/05/2016 16:33

Oh! That made me wonder, but I just wipe They're Real off with Simple cleanser.

Does make up just slide off me, do you think?

lem73 · 22/05/2016 22:49

I think I've removed them with eye makeup remover, then I'll come out of the shower looking like a panda!

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 23/05/2016 09:29

Yep same here Lem.

OurBlanche · 23/05/2016 09:58

Ah! I shower then remove the panda face.

That explains that, then Smile

I better not see this thread on Matthew Wrights show. They'll never believe that a mumsnetter no longer wants to pay top whack for cosmetics. Shock

Lndnmummy · 23/05/2016 13:29

lizzie, what are your reservations about this thread?

LizzieMacQueen · 23/05/2016 13:33

Oh, I was just thinking about the finances and couldn't fathom how swapping to a brand of mascars £10 cheaper could really help.

Luckyfuckyducky · 23/05/2016 13:34

I bought this last week and its literally amazing! www.boots.com/en/SEVENTEEN-Falsifeye-HD-Mascara_1502635/ only 6.99!

hollyisalovelyname · 23/05/2016 16:21

I didn't find Max Factor Masterpiece much good.
I love Chanel Le Volume.
I need Volume not length.
I'm using the Rimmel Colourist for everyday- I can't use eye lash dye and my eyelashes are very fair.
I've converted DD2 to Chanel from Benefit Smile

KiwiKay · 23/05/2016 17:07

My favourite mascara is Japanese so probably no help for you!
My favourite western drugstore mascaras are Max Factor 2000 and Max Factor Masterpiece.
