I can no longer afford Lancôme mascara. What's the next best thing?

I'm on maternity leave and need to adjust my budget accordingly glares at DH

Have used Lancôme Grandiose since it came out and I LOVE it. However, I can no longer justify £25 on a tube of mascara now I'm on maternity pay so I'm looking for an alternative, under £15.

What's best? I have half decent lashes but they need fattening and lengthening.

Thanks in advance Flowers

Sorry not a budget suggestion, but throwing it out there for when you're back from maternity leave Grin
I used to be a big Lancôme fan, until my sister gave me a Dior mascara for my birthday. It's the Dior addict IT lash and it's hands down the best mascara I've ever had, makes my eyelashes look perfect! Fully converted to Dior now.
As for budget I'd absolutely try Aldi as their face creams are really good so I imagine their cosmetics must be quite good too!

Badhairdontcare · 19/05/2016 21:54

Max factor! It's very nearly good as Dior- not used Lancôme. I used to shop at JL or Space nk.. Two kids later it's sainsburys 😂

HeffalumpHistory · 19/05/2016 21:56

I've used Bourjous for years! £9.99 I think. Cheapest bit of make up I own!! Love it though

thiswayplease · 19/05/2016 22:03

Max Factor clump defying extension is amazing, my go to mascara

I didn't rate the aldi one after a couple of uses, went gloopy

StrangeDream · 20/05/2016 06:30

I've used Max Factor but a long time ago. I think I liked it.

Off to make my purchase today; will report back Grin

Another vote for Max Factor Masterpiece.

yellowsun · 20/05/2016 06:39

I like the telescopic one as mentioned above.

I find Max factor ones too big and chunky.

(Lancôme doll eyes is my favourite!)

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 20/05/2016 06:41

I buy the smaller Benefit Roller Lash tube, it's only a tenner and I love it. Have to replace mascara every 3 months so no point buying a big one.

I've heard brilliant things about the Seventeen Falsify one (pink tube I think). It's only about £7.

deepdarkwood · 20/05/2016 06:56

Notexactly - I was just coming on to say number 17 falsify - cheap as chips and the best mascara ive tried in years. No clumping, easy to layer, very natural looking.

mrsmugoo · 20/05/2016 07:07

Max factor masterpiece max is my ride or die!

(And I also used to use £25 high end mascaras)

shash1982 · 20/05/2016 08:26

I used to use Lancome mascara then due to funds decided to use an alternative that was cheaper.
Found the soap & glory thick and fast one from boots is fab.

Workinzzz · 20/05/2016 08:30

I use the Soap and Glory thick and fast - I LOVE it, does exactly what it says, great coverage immediately and I don't end up with panda eyes or flakes under my eyes. Sticks very well and then washes off very easily with facial wash. I have no idea how those two things work together, maybe witchcraft.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 20/05/2016 09:05

When buying a mascara, I'd look at the applicator brush first and then the actual mascara. If you buy a cheap mascara with a brush that doesn't work for you, you've wasted your money.

Decide on the applicator and then look for brands with that style of applicator.

I'd recommend the Rimmel London Volume Colourist mascara in Boots and they are doing a buy one get second half price on Rimmel cosmetics at the moment in Boots.

twilightcafe · 20/05/2016 09:39

I'd be wary of buying make-up on eBay. There are too many fakes on there.

TheDowagerCuntess · 20/05/2016 09:44

For me, it's all in the brush. I don't like the green and pink Maybelline one either - it's the wrong brush.

The best mascara I've ever used for my lashes (very long, but could use some width) is Chanel Inimitable. When I went on maternity leave, I switched to the bright yellow Rimmel one, as it's exactly the same brush, and does as good a job at a fraction of the price.

YorkieDorkie · 20/05/2016 09:45

I use a £2.99 one from wilkos... Can't even remember the brand! I use it for beauty clients at college and it goes on beautifully. Even with the crappy disposable wands we have to use.

TheWindInThePillows · 20/05/2016 09:51

Max Factor false lash effect, I get the brown/black because of my colouring. It isn't a light effect but it isn't as heavy as some of the genuine falsh lashes my students wear!

LisaMumsnet · 20/05/2016 09:56

Oh dear, I'm going to put a cat among the pigeons now - I bought THREE of the Maybelline green and pink mascaras as there was an offer on and after just one day was looking at bootsale-ing the untouched two. I really, really couldn't understand how it could be the US's top-selling mascara. My current favourite is Maybelline Pulse Perfection Vibrating Mascara - I'm not sure if you can still get it in shops but I bought three on the internet and they worked out at about a fiver. PS I used to use Lancome too.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 20/05/2016 10:00

No 7 intense volume waterproof- I've used everything and always go back to it. Decidedly disappointed with expensive mascaras generally.

lifeistooshort · 20/05/2016 10:16

L'Oreal telescopic mascara the black tube (extra black I think). Really goog

JohnCheese · 20/05/2016 11:34

I like Seventeen 'Doll'd up' for my short blonde lashes. I'm like a few pp, it's all about the brush. Like this brush, and the fact that it comes in brown-black. Less harsh looking on my ageing eyes. And cheap as chips.

But am going to re-read this thread, and try some other.

blueberry2310 · 20/05/2016 11:46

Max factor masterpiece. Great mascara, I bought it after recommendations on here.

auldspinster · 20/05/2016 12:24

I love L'oreal mascara in the purple tube to make my stumpy lashes visable to the naked eye. It's worth noting that although Maybelline Great Lash mascara is crap they do a version with a big brush which is rather good.

RiverTamFan · 20/05/2016 16:05

I picked mine based off the effect I wanted from this Cosmo article! 100 mascaras all tested on the same eye.
